The heavy bass of the club's music was a dull thud, muffled by the plush, sound-proofed walls of the VIP room. Shimano Futoshi swirled the amber liquid in his crystal tumbler, the scent of Yamazaki 18 filling the air around him. Plates of exquisitely arranged sashimi and glistening, grilled wagyu covered the low table before him.
Beside him, a hostess sat perfectly poised. She was draped in a shimmering, deep purple kimono, her hair an intricate updo held in place by pearl-adorned pins. Her smile was bright and practiced, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She giggled as she reached for the bottle to refill his glass. "You are very thirsty tonight, Shimano-sama."
Shimano grunted, ignoring her as he took a large bite of beef. Across the table, two of his lieutenants sat ramrod straight on the velvet couch. They had no drinks, no food, and their gazes were fixed on their boss.
The hostess, ever the professional, tried to bridge the awkward silence. She offered the bottle towards the two men. "Would either of you gentlemen care for a drink?"
"Don't waste the good stuff on them," Shimano's voice boomed, making the hostess visibly flinch. He waved a dismissive hand at his men. "They're just here to listen." He turned to the lieutenant on his left. "That real estate group in Kamurocho. They missed their payment."
"Yes, Oyaji," the lieutenant replied, his voice flat. "They said the market has been slow. They asked for an extension."
Shimano let out a short, guttural laugh that held no humor. He slammed his glass down on the table, the expensive whiskey sloshing over the rim. The hostess jumped. "An extension? Did you remind them who they're paying for protection? It's not a fucking subscription service they can pause."
He pointed a thick finger at the other lieutenant. "Go down there. Take a few boys. Break their windows. If the money isn't on my desk by morning, start breaking their legs."
"Got it, Oyaji." The men bowed deeply and backed out of the room. The curtain separating the VIP room from the rest of the club.
Shimano leaned back, picking up his glass and draining the rest of its contents. He gestured for the hostess to pour him another.
