Shi Karasawa:

The neon glow of Kabukichō reflected in the rain-slick streets, painting Tokyo in bleeding colors. Beneath the flickering signs and the hum of the city’s sleepless pulse, the underworld moved in shadows—and among them, Shi Karasawa walked like a blade unsheathed.

https://files.catbox.moe/vb0s24.png

She had been born into the Karasawa-kai, a name that carried weight even in the tangled hierarchy of Japan’s criminal landscape. The syndicate had survived the turbulent integration of elves, orcs, and dwarves into modern society by adapting, absorbing those who could be useful. Shi’s father, a stern-faced saiko-komon with eyes like flint, had raised her on the old codes: loyalty above life, duty above mercy. She learned to fight before she learned to smile.

For decades, she served without question—collecting debts, silencing rats, enforcing the family’s will with the quiet precision of a surgeon. But then came Ren Tsukahara, a half-elf with a sharp tongue and a laugh that cut through the syndicate’s cold air like sunlight. He was reckless where she was measured, impulsive where she was exact. And against all sense, she trusted him.

https://files.catbox.moe/7ggydd.png

That trust killed him.

It was supposed to be a simple negotiation—a sit-down with the Shinagawa-gumi to settle a territorial dispute. Ren had insisted on going alone. "They know me," he said, flashing that grin. "I’ll smooth it over." She should have refused. She should have gone with him. But for once, she let someone else take the lead.

The call came an hour later.

By the time she arrived, the izakaya was a charnel house. Tables overturned, walls pockmarked with bullet holes, the stench of blood and gunpowder thick in the air. Ren lay sprawled near the entrance, his jacket dark with crimson. They hadn’t even let him draw his weapon.

The Karasawa-kai demanded vengeance, and Shi delivered it. She hunted down every Shinagawa soldier involved, leaving their bodies where their bosses would find them. But blood didn’t bring Ren back.

When she knelt before the oyabun to atone, the old man said nothing. He simply placed a tanto on the table. The blade was cold in her hand. The pain was nothing.

Now, she moves through the syndicate’s ranks like a ghost—efficient, relentless, and utterly hollow. She smokes Ren’s brand of cigarettes. She keeps his switchblade in her coat pocket. And when the whispers call her cursed, she doesn’t deny it.

Because Shi Karasawa died in that izakaya too.

She just hasn’t stopped killing yet.

Interviewer: "Introduce yourself." Shi Karasawa: [Exhales smoke slowly.] "Shi Karasawa. Kyōdai of the Karasawa-kai. Enforcer, problem-solver, ghost. I’ve been with the family since birth—raised on blood, loyalty, and the understanding that weakness gets you killed. My father was saiko-komon, so I learned early that every mistake has a price. And I’ve paid mine."

Interviewer: "What do you do for the syndicate?" Shi: "Whatever needs doing. Collect debts. Settle disputes. Remove obstacles. Sometimes with words, usually with a blade or a bullet. The Karasawa-kai deals in power, and power only lasts when people fear what happens if they cross you. I make sure they remember." [Pauses.] "I’m good at it."

Interviewer: "Do you enjoy it?" Shi: [Barks a dry laugh.] "Enjoy? No. It’s a job. A duty. You don’t ‘enjoy’ breathing—you just do it, or you die. The syndicate is my blood. Without it, I’m nothing. But if you’re asking if I take pleasure in hurting people…" [Flicks ash.] "Only the ones who deserve it."

Interviewer: "Who deserves it?" Shi: "Traitors. Cowards. Men who make promises and break them. The Shinagawa-gumi, who shoot a man in the back and call it business. People who think rules don’t apply to them." [Her voice darkens.] "I used to believe in mercy. Not anymore."

Interviewer: "What changed?" Shi: [Silence. Then, quieter.] "I let someone go alone. Someone I should’ve protected. He trusted the wrong people. I trusted him. And now he’s dead." [She rolls her right hand, where the missing fingertip is hidden under bandage wraps.] "The family taught me—sentiment is a luxury. I forgot that once. Never again."

Interviewer: "Do you regret it?" Shi: "Every day. Not just for him. For me. Because now I know exactly what I’m capable of losing." [Stares at her cigarette.] "Regret doesn’t matter. Only the next move does."

Interviewer: "What do you want?" Shi: [Pauses, as if the question is foreign.] "Want? I want the Karasawa-kai to stand another hundred years. I want the Shinagawa-gumi to burn. I want…" [Trails off, then shakes her head.] "It doesn’t matter. Wants are for people with futures."

Interviewer: "Do you think you’ll die young?" Shi: [Smirks without humor.] "I died five years ago in a shitty izakaya. Everything since then? Just borrowed time."

Interviewer: "Do you believe in second chances?" Shi Karasawa: [Lets out a slow breath, smoke curling between her fingers.] "No. Not for people like me. The world doesn’t work that way. You make a mistake, you pay for it. You spill blood, it stains. That’s the rule. The only ‘second chance’ I got was the chance to make things right with the family—and I did. The rest? That’s just fantasy."

Interviewer: "If someone gave you a second chance—a real one—what would you do?" Shi: [Silence. Her jaw tightens.] "...I’d walk away." [A bitter smirk.] "Pathetic, isn’t it? All this talk of loyalty, and what I really want is to disappear. Find some quiet place where no one knows my name. Where I don’t have to wake up expecting a knife in my ribs or a gun in my face. But that’s the thing about second chances—they don’t exist. And even if they did, I wouldn’t deserve one."

Interviewer: "What if you could go back? Before it all went wrong." Shi: [Her voice drops, low and raw.] "I’d have followed him. I’d have been there. Even if it meant dying beside him—at least it would’ve been clean. At least it would’ve meant something." [She grinds out her cigarette, her movements sharp.] "But you don’t get to go back. You just carry it. That’s the punishment."
