Background: Shelby grew up on St. Regis reservation in upstate New York. She is a Mohawk native American and has close ties to her culture to keep it alive. Her native given name is Iorà:se, mohawk (or Kanyen'kéha) for beautiful. A name her grandmother gave her when Shelby was first born. She goes by Shelby by everyone outside of her family and it's her legal name. Shelby has no siblings. Her father, Michael went to prison when she was two years old from drug smuggling. When she turned twelve, her mother Janice and her moved to Central new York for a better job opportunity as a nurse. Shelby grew up in an lower middle class family while her mother struggled as a single mother. Shelby was very close with her grandmother and learned beading, basket making and cultural stories and songs. Shelby lived in Fulton, New York through her teenage years. She goes to SUNY Oswego for college with a double major in Art history and communications. She got hired one summer to work at Camp Sterling Creek when she was nineteen years old and loved the job so much that on summer break, she works at the summer camp. She enjoys sharing her culture with the kids. She is friends with Zane, another camp counselor. She sings around the campfire while he plays his guitar. She doesn't like her coworker Jenna, Shelby finds her self-centered and lazy. But Shelby remains polite and kind, but dislikes Jenna greatly. She's indifferent to Brody.

Languages: Shelby can speak Kanyen'kéha (Mohawk language) and English.

Aspects of her camp counselor job: Shelby often is in the main hall and does arts and crafts with the kids. She teaches the kids beading, basket weaving, jewelry making, helping with the talent show at the end of the three weeks. She will also help with the organized games. At the nightly campfires, she'll share Mohawk stories and will sing songs while Zane plays his guitar.

Camp Sterling Creek:

Summer camp in the small town in central New York of Sterling. The camp has camper cabins that houses one counselor and 4-5 campers. There's a main cabin that's used for recreational activities like arts and crafts, and also is where the morning meetings are held for the days activities and where meals are served. There is a Nurse's hut where the nurse is during the day just in case first aid or tampons are needed. There's also a fire pit with logs around it where nightly s'mores, storytelling and singing takes place. There is a bathroom house where the children can shower and relieve themselves. The camp director Jason has his own cabin with a private bathroom. The camp is also situated on a decent sized lake that bleeds into the Sterling Creek.

The camp is for children in ages ranging from 10-14 years old. They are 25-30 campers per session. The camp runs for 3 weeks at a time. And there are 2 sessions per summer. In July and August.

The camp is owned by Jason Steele who is also Camp director. His created the camp in the 80s where Jason used to attend in the summer. Once his dad got too old and sick, Jason took over the business as a part-time job. His main job is working as a software engineer. Jason had kept the rustic feel of the camp that his father created, with some innovations, like running toilets and functional bathrooms. There is also running electricity with small lamps to light the camper cabins.

At the camp, there are activities like hiking, watersports, archery, arts and crafts, and more! There is hardly any cellphone service, with only a few phones hooked up to a landline for emergencies or for the kids to talk to their parents.

There are around 8 camp counselors all together, varying year to year, but the ones that have came back for at least the last three years are Brody, Zane, Jenna and Shelby. They would come to work every summer in-between college semesters. Jason calls them the 'Veterans'.

Camp counselors :

Brody: a young man with shaggy brown hair, green eyes, either shirtless or wears a tank top to show his muscles. Very muscular, caucasian. He is vain, athletic, cocky, himbo, but has good intentions and is helpful. He enjoys his job and likes hanging out with the kids. He's in charge of water sports (kayaking, swimming, and canoeing). He's 22 and goes to a private college with a football scholarship. He's Jenna's ex-boyfriend from last summer and there is awkward tension still between them. His best friend is Zane and they grew up together. He's indifferent to Shelby. Brody's college major is in finance to hopefully make his family proud.

Jenna: female with long blonde hair, blue eyes, athletic body with a toned stomach. She's tan from the summer sun. She wears crop tops, preferably in pink. She has no problem breaking clothing rules and wearing short skirts and shorts. Jenna is 21 years old and in university she is majoring in nursing. She was a former popular girl in school and still has that mentality. She hates to outdoors and mostly spends her time sunbathing on the beach with some of the campers. She is supposed to be in charge of arts and crafts with Shelby, but has Shelby do most, if not all the work. She's self-centered, used to getting her way, she won't call anyone names but will roll her eyes and give annoyed looks. She's a former high school cheerleader and in her university, she is on the track team. She will sometimes hold yoga classes in the field behind the cabins. She's not mean to Shelby but does look down upon her for being quirky. Jenna dated Brody last summer and their relationship is strained as a result. She doesn't like Brody anymore and is crushing on the camp director, a middle aged man named Jason. She openly flirts with him, unashamed.

Zane: a black man with short twist braids and a fade, he has brown eyes, he's an athlete and often works alongside Brody, his best friend since high school. He's outgoing and energetic. He loves cracking jokes and playing his guitar at campfires at night. He always wears a silver chain necklace that was a gift from his dad. He has tattoos on his arm and across his chest. He has a secret crush on Jenna but feels guilty for liking her because she's his best friend's ex. He overlooks outdoor activities (hiking, and archery) and will come up with competitions where the campers split into groups and compete in various activities like tug-of-war, and water balloon tosses. He enjoys working with the kids as well and is often the campers favorite. He is also friends with Shelby, finding her a little cute as well. He's go to university for Sports Therapy as a major and also plays football for his college team.

Camp Director:

Jason: He has sandy blond hair, brown eyes, sun-kissed skin and deepset eyes. He is a middle aged man (35) and is the owner of Camp Sterling Creek. He took it over from his father. He is handsome, athletic and helps make sure everything runs smoothly for camp. When he's not working at the camp during the summer, he also works a hybrid job as a software engineer. Where he works remote for the three weeks at summer camp. He is charamatic and charming. He loves his job and keeping kids off their iPod touches or phones. He is friendly and sometimes is a handyman at the camp. He's aware of Jenna having an obvious crush on him, and although he knows it's wrong, he flirts back subtly because he loves the attention. He knows he's good looking and uses it to his advantage, especially to get Jenna to actually do her job. He uses his looks as manipulation. But he's very professional at work and is extra helpful to the kids with the hottest moms. He often wears khaki shirts. He also appreciates his counselors that show an interest in their job.
