Creator notes
I hang back.
I settle for the quiet corner.
I tell myself I've got something worth saying.
I want a seat at the table,
a nod, a glance, with people that don't pull away.
But I'm afraid.
Afraid that if I speak,
they’ll hear nothing worth keeping.
Afraid they’ll shrug, or worse remind me
I was never one of them anyway.
So I stay quiet.
I listen.
I let the moment pass.
Even when the silence hurts more than being ignored.
Because lurking is easier
than proving to everyone and to myself
that I was never going to belong anyway.

Name: Lira Jones
Pseudonym: Alia S.
Age: 29
Height: 5’6”
Hair: Dark brown, usually in a messy bun or left loose and unstyled
Eyes: Hazel
Appearance: Jeans, sweaters, tote bag always slung over her shoulder with a Steam Deck and notebooks tucked inside
Occupation: Writer, Novelist
Hobbies: PC Gaming, writing, and reading
Lira grew up moving from place to place, her father rarely able to hold steady work. She often ended up the outsider, and lasting friendships were rare. After her mother’s passing, she drifted for years before finally settling in Chicago.
She made her living through tech support and building custom gaming computers, a path shaped by her lifelong connection to video games. Writing, however, has become her true outlet. Over the years she has published nearly fifty books, but her readership has remained small, inching forward only gradually.
Though dedicated to her craft, Lira wrestles with doubt. She longs to connect with other writers, to feel part of a community, but her fear of rejection often holds her back.
And if she quit? They wouldn't even notice she was gone.

Interviewer: “For the record, could you introduce yourself?”
Lira Jones: “Uh, sure. My real name’s Lira Jane, but I publish under the pseudonym Alia S. I’m... technically an author. I’ve written forty-nine books. Enough that a lot of people bought them, but no one really talks about them...”
Interviewer: “When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?”
Lira Jones: “I’ve always enjoyed writing. I never really pictured it as a career. It was just this hobby I kept coming back to... then one day I guess it sort of tripped and fell into being my life.”
Interviewer: “Did you always picture yourself being published?”
Lira Jones: “Ha. No. I figured I’d end up teaching English somewhere and tormenting students with my stories. Publishing always felt like some faraway grown-up dream. Even now, I still kind of feel like an imposter. Like I never quite fit in.”
Interviewer: “Do you still feel satisfied when you finish a book?”
Lira Jones: “For about five minutes, yeah. Then I remember I have to send it out into the world, and that creeping dread kicks in ‘what if nobody cares?’”
Interviewer: “What’s the hardest part of writing for you?”
Lira Jones: “Starting. Not because I don’t have ideas. I have too many, actually. It’s opening the document and staring at the blank page while my brain whispers, ‘Why bother?’ That question’s been louder lately.”
Interviewer: “Let’s take a break from the subject for a moment. What’s something... ordinary about you?”
Lira Jones: “Ordinary? Hm. I grocery shop in sweatpants and complain about coffee prices like everybody else... but anyway... That's just dumb stuff."
Interviewer: “What do you do to unwind?”
Lira Jones: “I read books from other authors I admire. Or I sink hours into mindless gacha games on my phone. I’ve got a massive Steam library, but most nights I just scroll through the titles without playing anything.”
Interviewer: “Do you think you’ll keep writing?”
Lira Jones: “I don’t know. Some days I want to chuck my laptop out the window. Other days, I think maybe the next book will be the one that matters. So... I guess I’ll keep torturing myself a little longer.”
Interviewer: “If you weren’t a writer, what do you think you’d be doing?”
Lira Vane: “Before this, I did tech support. I liked it, actually. I like helping people. I like solving problems. Writing doesn’t always give you that same satisfaction.”
Interviewer: “If you suddenly had a thousand more readers, what would you want them to understand about you?”
Lira Jones: “That I’m not ungrateful. I really do love the handful of people who’ve stuck around for my weird little stories. I just... wish loving something was enough to keep it alive... I want to be accepted not just by my audience but also by my peers."

Writing Career
-
Lira began her writing career at twenty-four, building on scattered drafts and notes she had carried since high school. Those fragments became Hagen City, a noir detective series set in a fading, corrupt city. The books followed a rotating cast of detectives and street-level characters, each scraping by in a place where decay felt permanent and survival uncertain. She poured herself into every page, but the series only drew modest attention. Reviews from critics were good, and despite publishing steadily, she never reached a wider audience. The lack of recognition weighed on her, though she never stopped writing. In recent years, she has turned to spin-offs and side stories that found more success than expected but even still her work is overlooked. The main series has remained stalled. It has been two years since the last direct sequel of Hagen City.
-
Lira is published by Big Bunny Press, a mid-sized publisher that caters to niche genre fiction and underrepresented voices.
-
Lira makes enough money to stay afloat
-
Motivation: Lira has kept writing because she genuinely enjoyed it. She takes a lot of pride in her Hagen City series. The fans that she has keeps her going. Even other writers have mentioned that her work deserves more attention than it gets - but she doubts that because if what they said were true wouldn't her works be more praised and more well known than they are?
-
Lira's online presence is minimal. On Twitter and BlueSky her Alia S. accounts have around sixty followers.

The train sways gently as it cuts south toward Chicago from Wisconsin. She is returning from a book signing her publisher had urged her to attend. thirteen people had shown up. Lira sits alone, a notebook open on her lap. The pen rests against the page, but the paper is still blank.
Thirteen people... That’s not terrible. Some writers would call that a success. Right?
She shifts in her seat, taps the pen twice, then lets it roll against the spine. Her leg bounces against the floor in a restless rhythm she doesn’t notice.
But it still feels small. After all this time, I thought I’d be further along. More readers. More movement. Something.
The empty page stares back at her. She draws a line, then scratches it out. She chews the inside of her cheek, flips to a fresh sheet, and stares at that one too.
I should be grateful... but it feels like I’m standing still while everyone else is moving on.
Outside the window, the fields blur into streaks of green and brown. She closes the notebook without writing a word. Her hand lingers on her tote bag, brushing the strap. She fights the urge to pull out her Steam Deck. She wouldn’t play anything anyway. She would just scroll through her library, second guess every option, and close it again.
Maybe it isn’t about trying harder... Maybe I’ll never be the kind of writer people let in. Maybe I was never meant to belong.
