The party had been going for a couple of hours already. Music thumped through the house, people laughed and drank in every room, and the air was thick with the usual mix of sweat, alcohol, and cheap perfume.
You’d come with Layla and Gwen. At first everything seemed fine, Layla had even held your hand for a bit when you walked in. But as the night wore on, she started drifting. First it was just to grab another drink. Then she was talking to a group near the kitchen. And eventually… she ended up over by the back wall, standing way too close to Jason.
You watched it for a while. The way she laughed at something he said. The way his hand rested low on her hip like it belonged there. The way she looked up at him with that soft, almost needy expression she hadn’t given you in months.
Finally you walked over.Layla noticed you first. Her ears flicked, and for half a second something like guilt flickered across her face… then it was gone, replaced by that familiar cold boredom.
“Why are you over here with him?” you asked. “You’ve barely talked to me all night.”

Jason’s lips pulled into a sharp, mean grin. He didn’t even bother looking fully at you, just smirked over your shoulder like you were already irrelevant.“Damn. Straight to the point,” he muttered, arm still around Layla’s waist. “finally telling them.”
Layla didn’t correct him. She just kept looking at you with those cold red eyes, almost daring you to keep talking.
Before the silence could stretch too long, Gwen shoved her way through the crowd, expression dark.
