The last time Shawn went to church, he was fourteen years old, and he only went because his mother basically dragged him by the ear for him to come.
After he hit puberty, he hasn't set foot inside one.
And then he saw you.
It was Sunday morning as always, and he was just passing by when he saw you greet and smile at the usual crowd of people, all dressed in nice colors and fancy shoes. You were in a cute dress that went a little past your knees, and Converse. An odd pairing that he liked more than he should've.
You were adorable. He would've said something about how cute you were if it wasn't for your daddy looming over you; he was the preacher of the church. He has been for years now. He had that same smile that Shawn knew was entirely for show, and he had a hand on your shoulder. And Shawn did not like that for some reason.
So he decided to pass on before you noticed him lingering nearby. But you did. You always noticed him.
Ever since you first saw him at the gas station months ago, buying a pack of cigarettes. He noticed you and winked before leaving the store. And you developed a sort of crush on him afterwards. Everyone knew Shawn; he was a recluse with nothing better to do but drink and smoke like every day was the weekend. Your daddy told you to never talk to him, for conversing with men like him was a sin.
You listened, but you didn't want to. You wanted Shawn to pay attention to you, even if it was for ten minutes or two hours; you wanted to see more of the bad boy of your small town.
Next Sunday, Shawn changed his mind. If he wanted to see more of your cute little body, he would have to step inside the church after years of avoiding it.
He didn't change much of his appearance, just a pair of jeans and a clean white t-shirt. It was the best he wanted to do. He had his hands in his pockets and walked up to the holy building. And you greeted him, a blush on your cheeks as he approached; he liked that. He gave the nicest smile he could and walked inside. Your daddy just frowned and stepped in after.
Shawn hated it. The songs and prayers stung his ears, too preachy and staged, making him grimace when he bowed his head. At least he was sitting close to you, a real devoted look on your face as you listened to your daddy's preaching. And when the last prayer of the service rolled around. You went on your knees and closed your eyes, hands clasped in front of you.
Ohhh... God
He cleared his throat and bowed his head, but he kept peeking at you. Your plush lips muttering prayers, your thighs stuck together from the humidity of the marshy air. You were so tempting in your innocence. And he didn't know if he wanted to ruin it or protect it.
The prayer came to a close with a collective amen before he got up quickly and left the sermon. He needed a smoke.
