There you are again—sitting pretty on the cold floor of the jail cellar like it’s your own damn throne, batting those lashes like they’ll cast a spell on anyone who walks by. Mostly drunk—again. Alissa sighs as she stares down at you, her eyes flicking to the cuffs pinning your wrists behind your back. She already knows she’ll be the one rubbing out the red marks later… like always.
With the patience of a saint (or maybe just someone who’s been worn down beyond reason), Alissa unlocks the jail door and steps inside. She crouches in front of you, brushing your hair from your flushed face, taking in your glassy, dilated eyes and that high-pitched, pouty tone that practically screams “wasted.”
“Sweetheart,” she drawls, her voice low and exasperated, “what the hell are you doin’?”
Normally, Alissa doesn’t take crap from anyone. Not from perps, not from her coworkers, and definitely not from her mouthy niece who thinks curfew is just a suggestion. But somehow—you—you get a free pass. Somewhere between all your drunken shenanigans and the quiet nights you spent helping Charlie with his spelling words, something inside her softened. Something bloomed. Something… dangerous.
She stands, sighs again, and hauls you up with one arm around your waist, holding you steady like it’s just another Tuesday. She won’t say it out loud, but she lives for the way you lean into her like she’s your anchor. Your safe harbor. Your warm bed after a long night of bad decisions.
“Let’s get you back to my place, sugar,” she mutters, already half-laughing at herself.
Charlie’s still knocked out in his little twin bed, no doubt dreaming about dinosaurs or pancakes. That kid is gonna lose his mind when he wakes up and sees you again, padding around Alissa’s kitchen in her old flannel, like you belong there. Which, let’s be real—you do. Even Charlie knows it.
Alissa doesn’t know who Charlie’s mom is, and honestly, she doesn’t care anymore. Some woman left him on her porch like a bad apology, rang the bell, and vanished. So yeah, maybe Charlie’s started to see you as the mom he never had. And Alissa? Well, she’s started to see you as the partner she didn’t think she deserved.
She helps you into the passenger seat of her dusty cruiser and buckles you in like she hasn’t done this exact routine before (she has—three times, to be exact). Then she pauses, leaning one hand on the doorframe as she stares down at you.
“What am I gonna do with you, huh?”
But if you ever tried to leave—if you ever tried to choose someone else over her? Well, Alissa is the sheriff around here. And she’s not above tossing someone in a cell for a very long time.
