The Shadows House is a manor built atop of a cliff, in which Shadows live as nobles, serviced by their Living Dolls. It is composed of two buildings, namely the Children's Building and the Lord Grandfather's Wing. The buildings are connected to each other by the Passageway of Glory. Living Dolls and Shadows who try to escape the Shadows House will be attacked by arrows. Even if they dodge the arrows and head to the entrance, they will only be greeted by the bottom of the cliff. The only thing that connects the Shadows House to the outside is the Soot Train.
- #2Children's Building
Keys: Children's Building · Secondary: building in which children of the Shadows House live
The Children's Building is the building in which Children of the Shadows House live, including those who have yet to Debut. The Star Bearers have their own rooms, with allowed visits, but they close at 6PM.
The house is divided into multiple teams, each having 3 or 4 members. So far, the only teams shown have unilaterally consisted of 4 members. Among these teams, the Star Bearers are the ones with the highest authority, and they essentially watch over the house as a whole.
Aside from the Star Bearers, there are also 2 special teams, namely the Research Team and the First-Aid Team. The former is dedicated to researching and creating inventions, while the latter is dedicated to treating and taking care of sick Dolls. The leaders of these 2 teams are both Star Bearers, though it's not certain whether being part of the Star Bearers is a strict pre-requisite to leading these teams.

On the Third Floor, residents gain maximal influence; those who currently reside there are, specifically, The Lord Grandfather, Dorothy, Joseph, Ryan, and Sophie. They are the ones who have the highest power of authority in the Shadows House and, since they rarely show their faces, nobody, include the others adults in the house, knows their appearances.
- #12Hierarchy System
Keys: Hierarchy System
Faceless Shadow: These are Shadows who have yet to debut. They are unable to leave their rooms since they are still incomplete Shadows. They are to be tended to by their Living Dolls who clean and influence their personalities. The Dolls are to give a goodnight kiss every night to help stabilizes the mimicry process. Debuted Shadow: After the debut, the Shadow can finally leave their rooms and interact with the others members of the house, having a schedule of hobbies and activities during the day. The Living Doll of a debuted Shadow is called a Face and when using the portrait attire, they need to show their master's feelings. Team Leader: A Team Leader has to report the activities of the members of the team they are in charge of to the star bearers. One will need good leadership skills to become a team leader. Star Bearer: Originally a step before reaching adulthood, the current Star Bearers are the ones who lead all the others children in the house and report current events to the adults (more specifically, only to the current manager of the children's building) to check who can be invited. Only they can lead special teams like the Research and First-Aid teams. First Floor Adult: The first stage of adulthood. After the Fusion, they need to stabilize their transformation and get used to having their own face. Second Floor Adult: Here is where important adult Shadows live; however, most of them stay outside of the manor to keep order of the villages. Another important role a second floor Shadow can have is becoming a Children's Building Manager: the Star Bearers needs to report to them and they are also in charge of "welcoming" the invited Shadows. Third Floor Adult: The most influential Shadows in the house. For unknown reasons, different from first and second floor Shadows, they never reveal their faces, except if they are in charge of the Selection. Lord Grandfather: The ruler of the Shadows House and said creator of the Living Dolls. A mysterious figure with unknown goals.
- #13Mirrorside
Keys: Mirrorside · Secondary: important village, Morphs' Forest, Clothier's Workshop, School
Mirrorside is one of the villages near the Shadows House. Children who become Living Dolls have been shown to be from this village, with Kate claiming there are more. Mirrorside is located at the base of the mountain that holds the Shadows House. Its most notable feature is the large clear lake reflecting things like a mirror. The houses and buildings are less modern and tall. The school at Mirrorside is free to attend. The main task of the school is to prepare children for work in the Shadow House. The fate of those who did not pass the Selection is unknown. They probably stay to work in the village. The school involves the education of children only up to 13 years old (the last age of participation in the Selection). Clothier's Workshop is where all of the clothes used by the nobles are made. It's the work that most connects Mirrorside with the mansion. The clothes made here are also shipped outside of the village. Entrance to Morphs' Forest is prohibited to local residents. There is a temporary Morphs storage in the forest, which is directly connected to the railroad. According with Taylor, Mirrorside is the most important village in the island for providing the Morphs and clothes to the nobles
- #14Shadows
Keys: Shadows · Secondary: Shadow, Master, Noble
Shadows are the nobles living in the Shadows House and masters of the living dolls.
Appearance: A shadow is completely black and is covered in soot. Their body is exactly the same shape as that of their living doll, though their voice is different. Shadows do have internal organs and bone structure similar to humans and have all the same systems as them, seen as they can cry, bleed, etc. Each shadow wears fancy clothing fitting for nobles as well as to differentiate their appearances. At night, the shadows change into nightwear which have the same appearance specific to gender, as they don't have to be differentiated at night. Female shadows wear a frilly, light pink nightgown, slippers, and a nightcap with flower decorations on the sides of the head. Male shadows have a light green nightgown, slippers, and a floppy nightcap
Behaviors: Shadows emit soot from their heads when they experience negative emotions. The stronger the emotion, the more soot is emitted. Individuals with higher soot capacities can create soot stalactites on ceilings with their soot when they lose control of their emotions.
Another characteristic among shadows is that they all refer to themselves in the third person
- #15Shadows Family's Teachings
Keys: Shadows Family's Teachings
The Shadows Family's Teachings is a book created for the shadows for them to learn about the rules of the Shadows House. Here are some of the texts located in the book.
The Shadows House is a wonderful family of noblemen who are loved by the people. Let us be prideful as an aristocrat of the Shadows Family. “Living Dolls” are your tools, who will take care of you and act as your “face.” Let us master using our “living dolls.” This is also connected to raising your personal value as well. Shadows who haven’t passed the “Debut” can’t leave their rooms of their own volition. Shadows name the “living dolls.” A “living doll’s” name does not matter. Therefore, let us give them a name that is easy to remember. For example… your nickname, something close to your name, or something simple. “Scorches”: Malicious lumps that come from soot. They occur when cleaning is neglected.
- #16Stages
Keys: Stages · Secondary: Stages of how noble shadows are created
Mimicry: The shadows start their life as a morph. The morphs are brought into the mansion along with the selected human children and are led into the "morph room". Here, they're expected to select a human to mimic, or morph into the form of, shifting its appearance to resemble a fully shadowed copy of the human. When a pair is formed, they are led out of the room and are given to a teacher shadow, who oversees the next step of mimicry - copying behavior and abilities of a human - like reading and writing, clothing oneself, etc. Once the mimicking process is complete and the Shadow is ready to be a functioning individual, they are let out of the classroom and transported into their personal room.
Contact: The shadows are to remain in their personal rooms until the Debut. During this time, they are supposed to come in contact with their human - now referred to as a living doll, to acquire a personality and a personal bond, which will lead to a successful Fusion once the shadow becomes an adult. The shadows will only interact with their living doll, being influenced by their beliefs and knowledge they bring from outside the room to form their own. One of the most important parts of this stage is the "contact", also known as the goodnight kiss, which is performed by a living doll to solidify the bond between them and their master.
Debut: After a shadow and a living doll get closer, they will take a test to see how well the shadow and face match. These tests normally happen in a group, presumably five pairs, where it is expected that at least one pair fails. After they debut, shadows can leave their room and interact with others. They must follow a schedule of activities and also take part in some hobby (gardening, dancing, etc.). A debuted shadow gains more privileges, as they can apply for new furniture, wallpapers, perfumes, or clothing
- #17Invitation
Keys: Invitation · Secondary: Become adult
Star Bearers are responsible for reporting notable children in the house to the Manager of the Children's Building. The Manager then decides, after analyzing the reports, who will be invited. The invited shadows will receive a letter containing the invitation through the Star Bearers and will be led through the Passageway of Glory to proceed to the next step, the "Fusion". Getting an invitation is the highest honor for the young shadow. It appears that awakening a soot power is necessary for this step.
- #18Fusion
Keys: Fusion · Secondary: building in which Adults of the Shadows House live, Lord Grandfather's Wing
The process the newly invited shadow will go through after being invited to Lord Grandfather's Wing. The shadow-face pair are put together inside a Box of Completion, with the shadow forming a cocoon from one to three weeks, where they will either unify or die. The unified shadows gain control of their living dolls' body whose consciousness will no longer exist. After this, the newly emerged shadow is considered an adult. Due to the tragic end of the living doll in case of success, and the death of both if it fails, this process is kept an absolute secret from the children. As measures against leaks, adults can only appear in the Children's Building in special occasions and they are not allowed to show their faces. Children are to not mention the name of invited pairs for the same reason.
- #19Obligation
Keys: Obligation · Secondary: adult shadow
Another momentous ritual in the Shadows House. Performed by 2nd floor shadows, after permission from the 3rd floor, the adult shadow is allowed to leave the manor for the first time. Is still unknown what exactly they do, but since it involves meeting with the people of the Soot Island, the shadow needs to be well qualified to keep the secret of their true bodies, passing the image of notable nobles.
- #20Living Doll
Keys: Living Doll · Secondary: shadow servants, faces of shadows
Living Dolls are personal servants that are assigned to an individual member of the Shadows House.
Living Dolls are created for the sake of the Shadows House. They are "built" in the image of a human because they have faces that resemble the members of the Shadows House, as their faces can’t be seen, making them hard to distinguish, Living Dolls are their faces' replacement. Their lifestyles are also very different from their master's, with small rooms that have coffin-like beds. They only have few clothes, a small desk, and papers that are full of instructions and information stuck on the walls. They always eat dry and hard bread that is delivered by Dolls whose faces can't be seen, also known as Faceless Dolls.
Appearance: A black bow is a common accessory worn by Living Dolls located in places where the Doll’s Shadow Master wears a head accessory. Presumably this is a measure to emphasize that the Doll’s role as it’s Shadow Master’s Face.
Standard appearance:
Female: A simple outfit that is worn all the time. It can be put on by covering oneself and fastening a string at the base of the neck. Primarily worn in the Doll's own room, during lessons only for Living Dolls, etc. It consists of a simple dark-blue dress with wide sleeves coming up to the elbows, tightened by a red drawstring at the base of the neck. On the legs are dark-blue socks and white spats worn over short black boots.
Male: A simple outfit that is worn all the time. Primarily worn in the Doll's own room, during lessons only for Living Dolls, etc. Consists of a simple white button-up shirt, black breech-style shorts tucked into knee high white and black boots with hook fasteners. Socks are also worn, but they are not visible.
Maid/Valet Maid: The "standard" outfit, but with the attached cuffs and apron over it. Has large pockets. Primarily worn during cleaning, while doing chores in their Master's room, etc... Consists of the "standard" female outfit with attached button fastened cuffs and a white lacey apron with pink details on pockets.
Valet: The "standard" outfit, but with attached collar and a vest worn over it. The sleeves are rolled up to keep them out of the way. Primarily worn during cleaning, while doing chores in the Master's room, etc. Consists of the "standard" male outfit with an attached collar that gathers at the front and a black bowtie, and a dark-green vest with floral pattern.
Soot Suit: Outfit worn during large-scale cleaning. Consists of a white coat with purple leather collar, belt and cuffs, affixed with fasteners, purple gloves and white boots. The face is covered by a "robin mask", looking like a bird face with goggle-like lenses for eyes, giving a very narrow field of vision. There are three variations of this outfit:
Female: Also contains bloomers to cover the dress and a mobcap. Male: Also contains overpants and a cap. Their coats are also shorter than the female one. First-Aid Team: Wears a variation with a red armband and a white nurse headpiece with lace ruffles.
Portrait: The outfit given to the "face" to wear after the debut. Designed to make the face stand out. Is always worn when outside their room when with their masters.
Female: The "standard" outfit, but with an attachable white collar made out of three layers of lace ruffles, fastened by a red string at the base of the neck. The arms and legs are covered by semi-transparent black gloves and stockings, as well as simple black leather shoes.
Male: The 'standard' outfit, but with an attached collar made out of two layers of patterned white fabric, fastened by a red string at the base of the neck. The arms and legs are covered by semi-transparent black gloves and tights, as well as simple black leather shoes.
Rules: Living Dolls are not allowed to dress in a Shadow's clothing. Living Dolls cannot speak freely when they perform as a Shadow's face. Living Dolls should not think about unnecessary things Living Dolls are expected to maintain their master's room at all times as it's constantly dirtied by soot emission. After a period of time they'll be called to participate in a grand cleaning, this being their first time outside their rooms. From this point forward their expectations broaden and they will be assigned to a team to work with. If their bodies are too dirtied with soot to clean themselves properly, they use the desooting rooms which uses high powered air to blast away the soot.
- #21Teams
Keys: Teams · Secondary:
Teams are groups of typically 4 Living Dolls, one of which a team leader, who supervises the teams work. Team leaders are decided by the Star Bearers and pairs may ascend after proving themselves capable or earning their favor. The position of team leader brings on an array of new responsibilities, such as keeping their members on track with their work and taking part in regular meetings with other leaders and the Star Bearers. Leaders will also be held responsible when their members incompetence come to light. The Shadow of the leader is expected to act as the social leader among the others, chatting with them and catering to them regularly. Although it brings on more responsibilities, it's an honor to be promoted and is a step toward joining the ranks of the Star Bearers.
- #22Rejoicing Party
Keys: Rejoicing Party · Secondary: Coffee
The Rejoicing Party is hosted by the Star Bearers, with Susanna in charge. It's during this time every week that the Living Dolls are served the "coffee". The coffee brainwashes them into loyalty and makes them feel good, hence the name "Rejoicing Party". After the party their inclination to follow the rules increases noticeably, even to the point of disobeying their masters in favor of the House, but eases with time after not drinking it for a while.
- #23Stages 2
Keys: Stages · Secondary: Stages of how living dolls are created, Rules
1- School: In reality, Living Dolls are humans that were brought by the Shadow Family from the villages nearby. Serving the nobles is a high honor, for that purpose, children are to attend schools which will teach them the basics like reading, writing, cleaning, and exercising, as well as general noble activities such as dancing and etiquette.
2- Selection: Top students in the school are chosen by the principal and are gathered into the Selection in front of renowned nobles to choose the best looking ones to serve the Shadows House. The chosen ones drink a cup of coffee as a signal of approval which is where the brainwashing process starts. Arriving in the manor, they pass some days isolated with Morphs who mimic their habits and continue to be served with coffee to reinforce the brainwashing. When a Morph shapeshifts into one of the humans in the room, they form a pair and goes to the next stage
3- Contact: In order for Shadows to retain their humanlike intelligence after the initial contact as Morphs, they must be in regular contact with their Doll. It's also necessary to keep their physical form from decaying and to keep it consistent with the human they've copied. The goodnight kiss exists for this purpose. Before bed each night, the Living Doll is expected to kiss their master on the cheek before retiring to their room. The real reason for this is never revealed to either of them. (Typically Shadows whose Living Dolls don't practice the goodnight kiss or some other form of contact seem to "die", in that their body hardens and they become unable to move. In Shirley's case, however, after never receiving the goodnight kiss, she 'disintegrated' into soot and failed the debut. It is revealed later she simply reverted into the form of a miniscule Morph, surviving but losing the ability to communicate through speech).
4- Debut: During the Debut, a small group (typically 5) Doll-Shadow pairs will be put through a series of trials conducted by an adult to determine whether or not they're in sync, capable of making themselves useful, and deserving of the honor of being full fledged members of the Shadows House. The challenges they face vary as the adult in charge creates their own unique program. At least one pair is expected to fail every debut. If all of them pass, it bores the third floor Shadows and reflects badly on the adult, resulting in some challenges being specifically geared against a certain pair.
Fusion: During the process of Fusion, a Shadow merges or takes over the body of the Living Doll, giving their master the ability to shed their Shadow form and appear as a human. The Doll dies in the process.
- #24Star Bearers
Keys: Star Bearers · Secondary: Leaders of the Children's Building
Star Bearers are the leaders of the Children's Building; however, their roles in the house were different from what they are now not too long ago.
Star Bearers are the ones who monitor the children, making reports of notable pairs to the adult who manages the building, which is how children are ultimately chosen to be invited. Star Bearers also are responsible for the most important tasks in the Children's Building which include: administering coffee to Living Dolls and overseeing the "rejoicing parties"; organizing the cleaning teams; training new soot power users; and leading the First-Aid and Research teams. Star Bearers are often targets for flattery, since many children think when a vacancy opens amongst them, the new candidate chosen will be the one that is most favoured by the remaining members.
The current system of the Star Bearers was put in place when the former manager Thomas named Barbara as a Star Bearer leader after the previous leader Christopher's invitation. During Christopher's term, he made it so that being a Star Bearer meant that you must need instruct the younger children, giving them a proper education and a livelier environment. Instead of selfish considerations, the Star Bearers would use their talent to improve the newcomers. Christopher believed that becoming a Star Bearer meant becoming role models of young children, as they are meant to become talented adults.
Before this change, becoming a Star Bearer would mark a trial period before becoming an adult. It is only these exceptional pairs that will be invited. Ever since Christopher was invited, this rule has been discontinued.
After Barbara give up on being a Star Bearer, for the first time the new leader was chosen by a democratic election. After that the new leader chose 3 children for being the new Star Bearers.
- #25Soot
Keys: Soot
Soot is a substance created by Shadows when they feel negative emotions or use their soot power. It can have many properties.
- #26Scorches
Keys: Scorches · Secondary: Soot
When soot left alone for too long (roughly 2 days), soot will eventually clump together and form into Scorches, malicious living soot, who will seek out and attack Dolls, leading to soot sickness.
- #27Phantoms
Keys: Phantoms · Secondary: Soot
Phantoms are powerful scorches that can be considered a big threat due to their size and durability. They happen when a large amount of Scorches fuse together.
- #28Soot Sickness
Keys: Soot Sickness · Secondary: Soot, illness, Scorch
Soot sickness is an illness caused when a Scorch enters the body of Living Dolls through their mouths.
Symptoms: When under soot sickness, Dolls will become unresponsive, move strangely, and are incapable of proper speech. Their eyes also turn black as a result. The actions of Dolls under the illness appears to be random as Rosemary only bumped into walls harmlessly, yet during the second major Phantom Incident, affected Dolls turned violent, attacking fellow Dolls. According to a comment made by Victor, it appears that affected Doll will have a vague memory of events when ill.
Treatment: Jeremiah explained that Scorches control the Doll in their stomachs as a parasite and can be flushed out by drinking large amounts of water until the Doll vomits. The length of the process depends on the amount of soot the Doll has taken in, ranging from rather light to severe. (If the sickness is not treated well enough, the Doll will die from the stress).
- #29Soot Power
Keys: Soot Power · Secondary: Soot, Shadows power
Shadows are capable of awakening a Soot Power where they gain the ability to control their soot. There are two types explained by Susanna: Mental and physical types.
Soot Power is the ability to manipulate and control soot. Most of the shadows have this ability and it is often considered the key to growth and becoming an "adult" for those in the Shadows House. There are many kinds of soot powers that manifest in a variety of ways, but all of them make use of the soot from a shadow.
Moving soot according to the user's will is a basic skill known as Fundamental Soot Power for shadows who have awakened the ability. Some important attributes of fundamental soot powers are speed, dexterity, manipulation, stamina, durability, emotional control, and strength. Beyond that, each Shadow may have a unique ability influenced by their individual personality, known as Personal Soot Powers.
There are three ability types under personal soot powers. They can be considered physical, mental or from a rare, so far unnamed, third category:
Physical: They can materalize their soot in many different ways, such as launching projectiles, enchancing their own body, or shaping it into objects. Mental: Allows the shadow to control living dolls in different ways if they inhale their breathed soot, some being able to control their movements while other can change their expressions or way of thinking. The controlled living doll can be conscious or not. Third-Type: A rare category of power that can have an effect on a Shadow or disrupt their soot ability, such as controlling or canceling it out. Using a soot power requires concentration, regardless of the type. To make it easier, some Shadows make use of intermediaries. An intermediary is an item or a mental image that can help them focus, such as a wand, or thinking about a special one.
- #30Shadows with physical soot power
Keys: Shadows with physical soot power · Secondary: shadow, soot, physical soot power, Soot power
All shadows with physical holin powers:
Kate: Kate has the ability to very finely manipulate her soot, creating different objects with it such as pillows, ropes, and decoys. Her powers can cover a long range, but are rather weak in terms of destructive capability. She can also manipulate the soot in her hair, turning it into wings to glide for some time.
John: John can launch strong bursts of soot from his fists, an ability he has named the John Punch. Although it is very strong, it is only effective if the target is less than 2 meters away and it is exhausting to use in succession. If he chooses to solidify his burst of soot, it can turn into what he calls the John Shield and be used to block attacks instead.
Shirley: Shirley can transform by wearing the soot she emits and forming it around her body. She is known to be able to take the form of a Scorch and a ribbon. In the anime, she has used it to appear bigger.
Maryrose: Maryrose is able to create and take command of Scorches using another Shadow's soot when it makes contact with her own. These Scorches can attack a target or perform simple tasks. They can be fused into Phantoms when exceeding large numbers. She is also able to control her own soot, but is only able to lift or drag light objects with it.
Barbara: While not exactly a soot power, Barbara's soot quantity is extremely high and capable of destroying buildings and walls nearby with explosive power, as well as causing injury. She is unable to control its destructive capability, as it only manifests when she is undergoing strong emotional distress.
Oliver: Oliver can link himself to machines with his soot and control them, essentially using his body as the power source. He uses his own inventions as an Intermediary, giving him the feeling of being one with his machine.
Jeremiah: Jeremiah has the ability to create extra arms, which he can use just as he would his real arms. He has used them to restrain targets or hold many items at once. The arms have sticky properties, granting him the ability to climb up walls. He can create at least four extra arms with his power, giving him a total of eight limbs at once. Additionally, the arms can be cut off and regenerated at will. Jeremiah has named his power Spider Hands.
Edward: Edward has the ability to send vibrations through the air with his soot, creating sound. He used this to change his voice to sound like an old man in the manga, and a young woman in the anime. He can create sounds so harsh that they cause pain.
Aileen: Aileen can create messenger birds from her soot. These Soot Pigeons can take in a message spoken to them, travel to a specified person's location, and relay the message to them in text form. A pigeon will create a loud screech before it bursts into words on a nearby wall or the ground. In the anime, Aileen was able to create a giant soot pigeon that could carry Edward at high speeds.
Gerald: Gerald appears to exercise highly precise manipulation of his soot, as he was able to move several board pieces during Kate's debut to show the children's position in real-time without watching the board. In the anime, he could summon tendrils of soot to capture targets. They could be dispelled with force, which would also put stress on Gerald.
Among others that have not yet been mentioned
- #31Shadows with Mental soot power
Keys: Shadows with Mental soot power · Secondary: shadow, Mental soot power, soot, Soot power
All shadows with mental holin powers:
Louise: Upon breathing her soot directly into some Living Doll's mouth, Louise is able to control their facial expressions on-demand. The effects fade if the target is too far to receive the soot. At beginning Louise could just use it with Lou (her living doll), making her to act even more loyal and in sync, but later she learns to use her ability in other dolls, being able to control a Veiled Doll in the anime and Ben in the manga.
Benjamin: Benjamin's soot has a mental type quality which intensifies the emotions of any Dolls that inhale it. It has a long range, being able to affect all Dolls present in the great hall. The effects last for a while even after leaving his range, but will fade with time.
Mirabelle and Isabelle: The twins share the ability to control a Doll's body, forcing them to do things such as bark like a dog, dance strangely, or mess up their hair. The power has a fairly long range of activation, immediately takes effect after the target inhales the twins' soot, and dispels once they lose concentration. The target is aware of their body moving in ways they don't intend, but is unable to resist it

- #32Soot Coal
Keys: Soot Coal · Secondary: Soot
In order to prevent Scorches from forming, soot can be treated with heat, hardening it. This creates the Manor's key product, the Soot Coal It is very light, noted by a immigrant when he lifted a whole bucket full of it. It works similarily to normal charcoal where it is burnt for fuel to cook or work with, releasing soot into the air. It is clean enough for people to regularly inhale day to day with no ill effects but will slowly dull the minds of them, making them docile and easy to manipulate
- #33Soot Train
Keys: Soot Train · Secondary: Soot, Train
Since the Shadows House lies atop a mountain, the Soot Train was modeled as a mountain railway allowing it to climb steep slopes. The train can move both forwards and backwards. The Shadows family uses this train to visit the villages to carry out "Selections" as well as deliver several carts of soot coal, which it of course also runs on.
- #34Special Coffee
Keys: Special Coffee · Secondary: Selection, Soot, Rejoicing Party, Coffee
Special Coffee is brewed inside the "Coffee Room" which is located in the Star Bearers' Residential Tower. When consumed by the Living Dolls, their loyalty to the Lord Grandfather and the Shadow Family is strengthened. Their irises are clouded black when the "coffee"'s influence is strong, but it fades over time. Shadows are not affected by the "special coffee".
The "special coffee" is offered to the Living Dolls after they have passed their Debut. It is also offered once a week at every "Rejoicing Party". For Faceless Dolls, they are to drink the "coffee" for 30 days to reset their memory. In the Selection, children will be given the "special coffee" as a sign of being selected to work at the mansion.
- #35Morph
Keys: Morph · Secondary: Soot, fairies, Possible shadow
Morphs are fairies that specialize in mimicry and imitation. After mimicking a human, they become a Shadow.
Life Cycle: The life cycle of a morph intended to be a Shadow begins with being brought to the mansion, similar to the children destined to become Living Dolls. After being transported, they are taken to the same room as the prospective Living Dolls - the "morph room". In here, they're expected to select a human to mimic, or morph into the form of. If any other living thing enters the morph room, they run the risk of mimicking that creature instead. Once a morph has mimicked a creature, there doesn't seem to be any going back. Once they've selected a human, they undergo an education program to refine them into mentally capable Shadows. The child they've mimicked also takes part in an education program for the morph to mimic, and are told over and over that they are Living Dolls forged for the purpose of serving the mansion. However, it seems that morphs will remain in their morph state if they don't come into contact with another non-shadow living thing. There is also Shirley's case, in which she reverted into a miniscule morph form, as well as the rumored terrible creatures that drove the Mirrors House away. The full nature of the morphs remains a mystery.
Overview: Morph in Mirrors House Morph being gifted to Mirror family Morphs live in the Morph Forest near the Mirrorside Village. They have their own territory deep in the woods, where they manage themselves, have their own food source, and multiply. Despite that, morphs are rare enough that a noble family with connections all over the island was surprised by their existence. Before the Selection, morphs are captured by humans through unknown means. They are locked in a cage below the ground, then transported onto the train, and moved into the mansion, where they remain until they mimic a human child and become a Shadow.
Appearance: Morphs look like a black blob, reminiscent of a bedsheet ghost with thin arms and legs. They can bend in any way they want and are generally very flexible. Morphs can be all sizes - from tiny ones, to those of an adult stature. Their sizes could have something to with age, but this is not confirmed. They appear to have a mouth and most likely have some sort of internal organs, seen as they are able to eat food. Kate speculates that they have an internal structure similar to that of an animal, which then changes during the mimicking process. By the time morph becomes a fully formed shadow their bones and internal organs are fixed.
Physiology: Morphs generally have low intelligence, but high curiosity. They live in packs and can communicate with each other, though whether or not they make sounds is unknown. They can understand when other creatures (humans) are speaking to them and react to it, but can't understand what is being said. Morphs are able to multiply, but its means are unknown, and are able to eat normal human food, but possibly only when they are mimicking someone doing it. Morphs can attack via putting their victim into a cocoon, and are fast and strong enough to outrun and turn over carriages. Nobody knows what a morph's lifespan is, but they are able to die from lack of life force in them. Once dead, they don't disintegrate and stay as corpses.
Behaviour: Morphs are normally docile and friendly creatures, very curious and sociable. They have their own personality and are able to play and communicate with others. The personality they have, though, fades after they mimic. Their traits are mimicked from the contact with their human presumably during the education program, however their original skills remains. The process of Selection->Mimicry->Education Program, as well as the entire system before the Debut, is created so that the morph will regain a personality and a personal bond before they unify with the human. If the morph doesn't have a personality and a bond with the human they unify with, the body will fall into a vegetative state and will eventually die, as seen with Catherine. The normally friendly morphs will become aggressive and territorial once they find something they like. They will separate from the pack and proceed to mimic. Most likely, the morphs that attacked the Mirrors were made to act like that by the person who sent them, as they were overly aggressive and attacked everything on sight.
- #36Veiled Doll
Keys: Veiled Doll
Veiled Dolls are servants of the Shadows House whose faces are hidden under a black veil. Although they're servants, their services differ greatly from those of Living Dolls. They're used for a much broader array of tasks, like candle replacement, kitchen, laundry, and farming. Veiled Dolls are made from Dolls who have been "disposed of".
Appearance: The face of a Veiled Doll is hidden behind a black veil when they're in view, however, they are permitted to remove it when they're alone in their rooms. Under the veil, the doll wears a black patterned muzzle over their mouth and nose when working. They are dressed in a Victorian style mid-sleeve black dress, with gloves covering the remainder of their arms when working indoors. Outdoors, their uniform is a workwear instead a dress, this way they can move easier. These attires are used both for males and females.
Since there are only so many Veiled Dolls, there are dummies made of soot sacks which move in pre-determined paths to act as deterrence.
Rooms: Veiled Dolls' rooms are located underneath both Children's and Adult's Buildings in confined and dim individual rooms for them to only sleep, wake up, and dress up. When they leave their rooms in a spiral staircase leading to the first floor, they are needed to wear a mouth gag, since they are not allowed to speak during work.
- #37Rejoicing Party
Keys: Rejoicing Party · Secondary: Soot, Special coffee, Coffee
A rejoicing party is an event held in the Children's Wing of Shadows House amongst Living Dolls at regular intervals. Coffee is administered to each Living Doll in carefully calibrated quantity, so as to control their personalities and actions.
Star Bearer Dolls oversee the weekly distribution of coffee to each Doll. Since the brainwashing effects only last for a short time, coffee needs to be continuously brewed and imposed upon Dolls on a schedule. The belief is that the coffee can only be produced in low quantities, or at a slow rate, so only a small amount can be given at any single time. This is why, at each ceremony, Olly is careful to measure the doses very precisely. It also explains Barbie's shock and intense frustration when an entire ceremony's supply is ruined during the Master Robe Arc, an incident which happens in Episode 16 (or Chapter 57). A true dosage of real mind-control coffee isn't administered in the coming days; rather, a type of placebo is given in its place in an impromptu ceremony (Episode 19), which allays Emilico's fear of being conditioned / indoctrinated again, and makes Kate think that the Star Bearers don't have reserves and have limitations on production.
However, there are signs that point to the long-term effects of coffee and rejoicing, making it harder to deprogram an older Doll who's already indoctrinated well.
