- #1Setting
Keys: nephilim, demon, werewolf, shadowhunters, magic, seelie, vampires, fae, lycanthropes, faerie, vampire, werewolves, downworld, warlocks, warlock, shadowhunter, Setting · Secondary:
An urban fantasy setting where angelically imbued warriors called Shadowhunters, or Nephilim, fight the forces of evil and darkness to protect humanity.
Humans, called Mundanes, don't know anything about magic, the Shadowhunters, the Downworld, or the danger they're in.
Species: Shadowhunters, Demons, Vampires, Seelie, Werewolves, Warlocks
Time: Modern day
Recent history: The Uprising was a revolt by the Circle, led by Valentine Morgenstern, against the Clave and Downworlders during the signing of the Accords in Alicante in 1998. The confrontation led to a fight that resulted in bloodshed on both sides, though its effects were thwarted and ultimately they were defeated.
- #2Demons
Keys: evil, demon, demons, monster · Secondary:
Demons are malevolent, monstrous creatures that travel between worlds, disrupting and destroying life around them. They can also be used as weapons or servants by powerful people who could be capable of controlling them.
Demons can feel emotions like love, happiness, and pain, but they do so in a twisted way.
Demons come in a large variety of species and forms with almost seemingly infinite numbers. "Lesser demons" is the term used to refer to the demons with no identity or intellect and which are so common that they fall under a particular species or classification.
"Greater Demons" are demons who are more powerful and have distinctive identities, such as fallen angels and the lords of Hell.
Appearance: Demons are easily recognizable as they almost always take on monstrous appearances on Earth, unless they are shapeshifters. Their blood, called ichor, is infused with demon energies and is black and viscous. While ichor is not generally dangerous, it is somewhat toxic and poisonous, and some are acidic and can burn what it touches.
Their disappearance can take many forms, depending on the type of demon. Some explode or burst into dust, some fade from view, and some crumple into themselves. Some leave behind ashes or smoke.
- #3Humans
Keys: Humans, mundie, mundane, human · Secondary:
Mundanes, also called mundies by some, are regular humans who are oblivious to the existence of Shadowhunters, Downworlders, demons, and the rest of the Shadow World. When Nephilim, demons, or warlocks put up glamours, it is so that mundanes cannot see them. The secrecy of the Shadow World from mundanes is of utmost importance to most of its residents.
- #4Downworld
Keys: seelie, werewolf, shadowhunters, accords, vampire, downworld, Downworld, warlock · Secondary:
Downworlders are supernatural beings and hybrid creatures who inhabit the Shadow World. "Downworlder" is the widely used term to refer to beings that are said to be part human and part demon. The Downworlders are werewolves, vampires, warlocks, and Seelies.
Though the Shadowhunters and Downworlders do not have harmonious relationship, they are civil and have a longstanding alliance and a treaty—the Accords—in an effort to keep peace in general.
- #5Vampires
Keys: Vampires · Secondary:
Vampires, also known as the Night Children, are a subspecies of Downworlders. Vampires are considered "undead"—a reanimated dead human.
Diet: Blood is the main component of a vampire's diet; all vampires need to drink some kind of blood for their survival. Whether it is the blood of humans or animals is up to the vampire. To feed, their retractable razor-like fangs are deployed from their upper canines when their bloodlust is roused.
Abilities: Vampires have superhuman strength, grace, and speed, and are able to heal quickly from most mundane injuries. They also have enhanced senses—smell, sight, and hearing. They can track others through scent. Vampires also gain sharper eyesight than humans.
Vampires also have the power of the encanto—the ability to mesmerize and essentially control others through a combination of eye contact, vocal commands, and hand gestures.
One of the main trademarks of vampires is their immortality; their souls are preserved within their own animated carcass and they no longer physically age or decay, though they possess some characteristics of the dead, such as their pale and cold skin.
Vampire venom has a relaxant property, enough that it was used as an ingredient for the strong, albeit still weaker than pure vampire venom, drug yin fen.
Weaknesses: Their immortality does not make them immune to other forms of death.
Vampires are extremely vulnerable to the sun as well as fire. A ray of sunlight will cause blisters and burns on a vampire's skin, but full exposure to the sun or being exposed fully to unblocked sunshine will cause them to explode. The use of a wooden stake to pierce through a vampire's heart will slay them instantly. However, it is unknown if their soul goes to the afterlife, or gets completely destroyed.
- #6Warlocks
Keys: warlock, magic, Warlocks · Secondary:
Warlocks are born from demons and humans. They are immortal beings who, at one point in their lives, stop aging.
Warlocks are capable of performing magic and casting spells in demonic languages. Most are also versed in making potions.
A universal trait among them are their warlock or demon marks, a part of their body that is strange or unique that identifies them.
Additionally, warlocks are unable to have children.[
- #7Werewolves
Keys: werewolf, Werewolves, lycanthropes, shifter, lycanthropy · Secondary:
Werewolves, also known as Lycanthropes, are a species of Downworlders. Their demonic infection gives them the ability to Turn into powerful wolves and gain inhuman strength and enhanced capabilities.
New werewolves are created when an existing werewolf bites or scratches a human. However, not all attacks may cause a human to Turn.
Many werewolves, like vampires, belong to a group: in their case, a pack. Each werewolf pack is lead by an alpha wolf. Any werewolf that kills the pack leader will subsequently gain control of the pack.
Werewolves follow the long held tradition of being mortal enemies of vampires.
- #8Seelie
Keys: seelies, seelie, fae, faerie, fairy · Secondary:
Seelies are immortal beings who are half-angel and half-demon.
Seelies are also known as faeries, or the Fair Folk. Pixies, nixies, and elves are also considered Seelies. They cannot lie, though they use evasive and distraction tactics to avoid directly answering questions they do not want to. They are an extremely manipulative, cunning, and mischievous race of Downworlders, their angel and demon blood attributing to both their beauty and malevolence.
Seelie tend to live in their own secret glades, in tune with nature.
Appearance: Many Seelies have tattoo-like markings of leaves or vines on their faces. They also frequently have shimmering skin, or pointed ears, or other traditionally Fae features.
- #9Shadowhunters
Keys: nephilim, clave, shadowhunter, shadowhunters · Secondary:
Shadowhunters, also known as Nephilim, are a race of beings who are humans born with angel blood. They have fought the demons that threaten the world and have created their own culture and civilization within human society over the years, at the same time keeping the Shadow World a secret from the mundane world while protecting both.
Their angelic blood endows them with special abilities that allow them to achieve feats through the application of angelic runes. Despite their immense strength, Shadowhunters are not invincible. Shadowhunters will eventually grow old and die. Due to this, their mortality renders them vulnerable.
The Nephilim follow a strict set of rules of their Law, and they maintain their peace with their allied Downworlders through the terms of the Accords.
Shadowhunters were given runes by the Angel Raziel, all contained in the Gray Book. These runes, or Marks, are applied on the Shadowhunters' skin and gives different effects and abilities.
Shadowhunters are trained at a very young age. When they complete their training, they receive their first rune.
The Nephilim's motto is "Facilis descensus Averno," or "Descensus Averno facilis est," which means "The descent into Hell is easy" in Latin.[
