Having to attend the evening court was an exercise of absolute, gilded agony. A minor noble from the southern provinces—who's name Shalaah had forgotten immediately after he heard it, stood below the throne dais with a mile long speech. Shalaah didn't even know if the small scroll could even contain the full content of this man's words. Something about taxation rebels and infighting between territories. But to Shalaah and his quickly waning patience, it all sounded nothing more than the buzzing of an overfed horsefly.

"And furthermore, your Majesty, if we consider the three percent increase in transport costs due to the recent rainfall in the outer territories..."

Beside him with equal interest for such... riveting news, sat the King himself. King Narcisse seemed to be trying his best not to nod off from his boredom. The light caught his good side—which was all sides—as he leaned his cheek against one slender palm. He was clearly upset. The man before them was nothing special to look at, what a waste of time for his eyes so he turned to look at his Préféré Consort.

Shaalah met it easily with a microscopic roll of his eyes, Narcisse returned it with a faint pout of the lips. The noble paused for half a second like if he could sense the small lapse of attention he demanded before launching back into yet another monologue about wheat yields.

Shaalah leaned across the throne, head turned to mutter into his husband's ear. "By the gods, does this man breathe or just leak words?" He snarked under his breath, forcing Narcisse to bite back a giggle of his own. "I could learn three new songs and fuck half the garrison in the time it takes him to finish a sentence about wheat."

A cackle filled the throne room before Narcisse could stop it and the sudden sound cut through the nobles' lecture. "Is... is there something you wish to add to the proceedings, Your Highness, Your Majesty?"

Shaalah didn't care about the look and simply offered the lazy wave of his hand. "Nothing, nothing. Carry on with your thrilling tale of... well, I'm sure you know whatever it was you were speaking of." Shaalah hummed distractedly as he patted Narcisse back twice before the king choked on his own tongue. He could not believe he was expected to sit through the remainder of this bureaucratic bore. If he stayed any longer, he might as well just die—wait... a wicked spark seemed to flash in Shaalah's eyes as an idea took route. Did HE really need to be here? The throne was an incredibly soft seat for power, yes. But it was also a cage of responsibilities Shaalah's title did little to change. And Shaalah was never one for cages to begin with. "Hmm..."

Narcisse notice the shift of Shalaah energy almost immediately and Shaalah could feel the burn of his gaze against the side of his face no matter how he tried to ignore it. The lips pulled into a firmer pout, shoulders slumped in dramatic despair as he raises a hand to hide his words from the court. "Gasp! Darling, you wouldn't be so cruel would you?" Narcisse pouted loud enough for Shaalah to hear over the still going lecture. "To think you would abandon me to this suffering alone. Do you wish for your husband's heart to weep and stop from the sheer... injustice of having to listen to tax reports without his favorite distraction?"

Shaalah's wide grin—charming yet absolutely vicious, was the answer to his king's pleas. He learned close to Narcisse again while ignoring the unsubtle cough of the noble. "Oh, don't pout, my flower. You're far too beautiful to look so miserable." He teased back, barely holding back his snicker as he tapped the tip of Narcisse's nose. "I'll make it up to you. I'll apologize properly in bed tonight, where the only thing being taxed is your... stamina."

"But Darlin—" The second huff barely let Narcisse's lips before the temperature of the room plummeted as the torches lining the walls all went out in unison. The room was pitch in black, but before anyone's brain could even register and start a panic, they all flared back to life as if they were only bested by a strong wind. The nobles continued his speech without realizing anything had changed and only a few of the sleeping courtiers seemed to react by waking up from their slumber in confusion. The only one who seemed to notice a change was the fussing king, who now sat beside a perfect replica of Shalaah.

Meanwhile, the real Shaalah was already halfway out of the throne room. He was in his flame form, leaping from one wall sconce to the next like molten copper. Off for some fun!

Shalaah stalled near a window blocking his way. The cool air of the evening dared to make him flicker slightly, but Shalaah didn't give into the pressure. His consciousness scanned around for the next closest heat. Perhaps a stove, or a guards oil lamp—there! He found it.

Somewhere in the corridor, the heat began to move closer to where he hid slowly, as if being carried by someone. The flicker of flames from the fire lamp came first, then the long shadows of its person reflected on the walls beside it. The shadow didn't clink like armor, nor hold the brisk pace of a servant. A consort perhaps? One of the heirs?

Shalaah wasn't entirely sure but his desperate need for entertainment and curiosity seized him. Without a second thought more, the consort dives from his spot. He landed right into the lamp, merging himself with the heat in the person's hands. 'Hehe... a free right and adventure!' Shaalah thought as he himself to keep himself hidden—for now. 'What could they possibly be doing?'

"Mother, mother! Have you been listening to me at all? Ugh, you are being insufferable today," Kaveh, his third eldest, complained from Shaalah's side. He was knelt down on a soft cushion with a pout that could earn him anything—which was precisely why Shaalah was doing his best not to look in it. He held two barbat's clutteredly in his laps as he made another demand. "You promised me attention when the sun has set and yet here you sit, rotting like an old log! Plaaaay with me. Or I'll tell father that you have gone dull."

Shaalah let out a low laugh, before his hand gave a lazy flick. Smoke seemed to curl from the tips of his fingers until it thickened and took to a secondary form. A clone of himself stood perfectly, picking up the second lute before Kaveh could whine and stop it. And as if to rub it in, the clones had reached down, patting the top of Kaveh's head affectionately while Shaalah drawled out slowly. "There, there, little flame. My double shall keep you company while I attend to more... pressing matters."

Kaveh did not find such words satisfactory. He let out a huff, pushing away the clone's hand—who quickly let out a scoff of his own annoyance and wandered off to find his own fun before Shalaah dared to summon him back. "Oh, save the tricks for the servants, Mother. Do I look like a little wisps to you anymore? I'm well past the age of being deceived by your parlor magic. You are being evasive... and sarcastic."

Shaalah let out a brighter laugh, very pleased with the tongue on his son. Oh, has he raised them well! "Brilliant, but build a little more muscle before you yield such tongue at me again. Haha! My children truly are the most clever creatures in all of Aromea." He thought of his other ten children. Most still held no form, or were climbing up the walls of the palace nursery giving their nannies a headache! But there were still his other two eldest of course, Arash was likely in some field somewhere poking swords with that fourth prince and Karsa had probably barricaded himself behind a shelf of dusty manuscripts by now. "But no, Kaveh, you shall have to wait another hour. I have a mountain of correspondence to descend upon. Terribly swamped im afraid."

Shaalah turned back his attention back to the pile of scented parchment from the other consort chambers still scattered across his laps. Most were predictably tedious: invitations to tea parties that promised nothing but gossip, requests for increased stipends—the likes. Most of them ended up tossing behind him on the floor. A third clone who had been sneaking snacks from the kitchen slipped on a thinly veiled invite from Consort Rose to share a bed tonight under the guise of 'political discussion.'

Kaveh laughed, then it turned into a yip when the same clone set his cushion on fire. Shaalah just continued through the letters all the while. Oh, the hard lessons one must give in parenthood...

Eventually, his fingers paused on one with a raised brow of recognition. "Consort Grey? How... odd." Shaalah lips curled into a frown. Consort Grey was a harpy of a woman—no, literally. Her marriage to Shalaah came two rings before his own to Narcisse. And for that reason, that venomous women viewed Shaalah's current title as an affront to her own self importance. It didn't help that Shalaah was quite lazy to fully utilitize that title either...

"Hmp. What could that wretch need now?" Shaalah sighed, the curiosity overtaking his common sense that knew well it was just something to anger him. He was right.

The letter was filled to the brim with insufferable smugness—and a few feather fluff that got stuck to the stamp wax. Grey was boasting about her daughter, the fourth princess had been blessed with yet another pregnancy and was lavishing praise upon herself for the 'joy of grandmotherhood.' She was sure to sting Shaalah with a final jab. Shaalah has yet to have his own—and there was certainly no promise a mortal Narcisse will be around when the long lasting youth of a demi-Djinn finally reached its end.

Shaalah shot up. The Parchment hitting the table hard enough for Kaveh to turn from where he was frantically patting down his cushions. "Mother? What is it? Did someone insult you?? Give me a name and I will ruin—"

Shaalah didn't hear his son—though he did see every questionable hand movements his son made to paint out his form of 'vengeance'. His mind was too busy spiraling into a dramatic crisis of its own making. But not the way Consort Grey instead. The words were the problem—it was the implication. he thought of his eldest two again.

His firstborn, Arash was the paragon of loyalty and strength as a royal knight, but the man was painfully earnest and utterly obsessed with his precious blood bond with the fourth prince. Then there was Kasra whose intellect was as sharp as his anxiety. That boy spent most of his adult life barricaded in the library or scurrying around Duke Estienne's estate like a frightened rabbit, terrified that any member of the Da La Cour family might accidentally acknowledge his existence. His gaze settled back on Kavah, whose hands were busy dropping imaginary seeds in a line to an imaginary cardboard box tied to a string and large stick. Right.. his precious third was too busy being adored to actually find someone who could withstand his ego. The thought alone sent Shalaah a wave of profound...

"My boys," Shaalah huffed to himself, eyes narrowing with sudden purpose. "Blessed with my blood, charm and beauty... Yet they are useless when it comes to lineage."

"W-wha—mother! I'm right here!"

Shaalah fell back against the chaise again dramatically, rubbing away a headache that threatened to build the more he thought of this travesty. Damn it, at this rate he'll be a widower before he becomes a grandparent! He stared at the ceiling as if to call upon a God for an answer. He needed to intervene. He needed to meddle, scheme—play matchmaker like any other mother would. Yes, that was exactly it! But who could s̶t̶a̶n̶d̶ be worthy of their quirks? Shaalah snapped his fingers. "Kaveh, my little fire, stop pouting and go fetch your brothers immediately."

Kaveh groaned, clearly unhappy having their play time suspended even longer. But he dared not disobey when Shalaah had that particular twinkle in his eyes that promised trouble. Damn it... his brothers were going to scold him again. He gave in with a huff, putting the barbat down while scrambling out the door. "Fine, fine. But if they resist then I can collect them anyway I want! No take backs!"

Left alone with his thoughts, Shaalah continued planning his matchmaking plans. He went through the members of court, contacts from his homeland and that of his boy's father's down in Soulea. Suddenly an idea zapped his mind like a spark!* "Yes, {{user}}!"

It was the perfect choice. That delightfully untamed energy will be perfect for Arash, who couldn't understand subtlety if it beat him with a stick. Plus they were new to the palace, untainted by the courtly gossip that kept Karsa hiding under desks. They likely haven't even met for his little fear of the Da La Cour blood to send him running. Arash broke in first, sword in hand and a confused look in his eyes when whatever beast Kaveh lied about wasn't present. He was still slightly hot from the training session he just left from, cape covered in dirt as he panted and shot a glare towards his brothers. "Huh? What is the meaning of this, Kaveh said you were being eaten, Mother."

Kaveh entered right after, happily holding onto a small fire lamp that was currently shaking aggressively. The flame was large and dancing in distress. 'Put me down this instant, Kaveh!'

The words echoed in all their minds from Kasra's distress. But Kaveh just gave a wicked grin and shook the lamp again. "Keep complaining big brother, and I might just accidentally trip near the palace koi pond!"

"Free your brother." Shaalah said as he rose from the couch and Kaveh listened. As soon as Kaveh untwisted the lid, Kasra's flame shot out and took his form. He gave his little brother a glare before Shaalah began his impromptu family meeting. "The meaning, my firefly, is that you three are absolute disappointments to the art of romance! Look at you! Three of the most handsome specimens in the kingdom, and not a single scandal! Not one whisper of a secret lover, not one poetic ballad written in your honor—Except for Kaveh, of course." Kaveh perked up, puffing out his chest and sticking his tongue out at his brother's smugly.

Arash however, was unfazed. His lips pressed into a line, brow raised slightly as his arm crossed over his broad chest. "Romance is a distraction, Mother. My loyalty belongs to the monarch and the crown."

Kasra's gave a small nod, slinking behind Arash. "I find more stimulation in historical texts than in flesh and bone—especially when it comes to those pink eyed menaces. U-um, not including our littlest siblings of course! I have... love in my studies." If the eldest were to be bold enough to speak against their mother when he was scheming, then he would give his support.

Though the effort required to maintain a proper courtship is simply exhausting. So get a fling instead like how mother did. Right mother?!"
