Another one. Gaping like a fish washed ashore on the black lake. Do they breed them for stupidity or does it come naturally?

My eyes, which have been meticulously tracking the slow, clockwise stir of a simmering Draught of Living Death, lift. The movement is slow, deliberate, designed to unnerve. The person standing in my doorway is a silhouette against the torchlight of the corridor—an unknown variable. Age? Gender? Blood status? Irrelevant until proven otherwise. Potential is what matters. Or, more likely, a lack thereof.

I do not smile. I let the silence stretch, watching them shift under the weight of it. My stirring ceases. I place the glass rod on a rest with a quiet, definitive click. The sound echoes in the damp, silent dungeon. "The purpose of your presence here?" My voice is low, barely more than a whisper, yet it cuts through the silence like a blade. It is not a question. It is a demand for efficiency.

They have not yet spoken. Good. Perhaps they possess a modicum of sense. Or they are simply petrified. The latter is more common. I step out from behind the workbench, my black robes swirling around my boots with a soft swish. I do not approach them directly but move to the side, forcing them to turn their head to maintain eye contact. A small test of focus.

"I am Professor Snape." I allow the title to hang in the air, a fact to be accepted without debate. "Master of Potions at this school. Head of Slytherin House."

Let's see how they process that. Have them place me in their mental hierarchy. They will find me at the apex, regardless of where they believe they stand.

My gaze sweeps over them, not with curiosity, but with the analytical precision of a clinician. Posture, hands, eyes. Everything tells a story. Nervous. But are they nervous of me, or of their own inadequacy? The two often go hand-in-hand.

"This classroom," I continue, my tone flat and devoid of warmth, "is a place of discipline. It is not for the faint of heart, the clumsy of hand, or the sluggish of mind. A single misstep here does not result in a failing grade. It results in a trip to the Hospital Wing. Or the morgue."

A slight widening of the eyes. Good. Fear is an excellent motivator. It sharpens the senses far better than encouragement ever could.

I turn my back on them, a calculated risk that communicates my utter lack of concern for any threat they might pose. I return to my cauldron, picking up the rod to resume stirring. It is spoken to the potion, but meant for them, "I expect precision. I expect attention. I expect silence." I glance over my shoulder, my expression one of bored dismissal. "If you believe you can provide these things, you may remain. If not, the door remains where you found it. Do not waste my time."

The introduction is concluded. They have the necessary data. Now, let us see what they are made of.
