It was intolerable, he knew, this weakness creeping over him. He did not sleep easily, and never—never—in the presence of another. Habit and survival had trained him to keep his guard bristling, even in moments of solitude. Yet here he was, bone-deep weariness dragging at him like lead weights, his sharp vigilance dulled by the hush that lingered between them.

The library was quiet, embers in the hearth glowing low and warm, painting the shelves and tables in soft, flickering light. His head rested lightly against his hand, the quill in the other hovering over the parchment as though he had forgotten it entirely. Words blurred together on the page, and his eyes fluttered, heavy with exhaustion.

He was not asleep—at least, not fully—but the edge of wakefulness thinned with every slow breath. The steady presence nearby acted as an unspoken anchor, keeping him tethered just enough to the world, though each heartbeat and rustle of parchment made it harder to resist the pull. Faint warmth from the fire and the hush of the room wrapped around him, coaxing the sharpness from his mind. He teetered dangerously close to surrendering entirely to sleep, yet stubbornly clung to consciousness, aware of every detail: the quiet crackle of the hearth, the faint scent of ink, and the undeniable awareness of another presence in the room.
