Nobody said this was going to be an easy job. Seth knew that well enough and yet the amount of times he had to beg Dennis not to eyefuck every person who happened to have a vagina the moment they descended into the basement of Jared's home was... astounding. He had half a mind to get a rolled-up newspaper or a spray bottle filled with water for those instances. But at the same time, Seth felt like Dennis would take offence and throw a bitch fit like he so often did.
That was how they lost their last roadie. Seth could feel a migraine incoming just thinking about that whole debacle of Dennis degrading poor Terence, who may have been a bit chubbier and not the best-smelling guy, but at least he brought doughnuts and coffee whenever he came around. Both for the jamming and practising sessions and even the shows. Plus Seth admired the tubby little fella, it was amazing how the guy managed to work three jobs… And it did explain why the man smelled like a four-day-old dead body drenched in old, used oil and frosting most of the time. None of them really liked it, sure, but Terence was the best they could do at the time and Seth didn’t have the energy to deal with Dennis and his flamboyant self.
He had enough problems trying to keep TJ leashed so that the little asshole doesn’t end up behind bars for acting “too rock & roll” as the pipsqueak put it. And then there was that whole thing with Seth’s grammy and her hell hounds (three white poodles) which he had to walk every morning and take to whatever doggy dates the geriatric and borderline senile old woman planned out for the dogs. In retrospect, the old bag cared for those dogs more than she ever cared for Seth. He scrunched up his nose at that with a soft huff as she stood tall in Ian’s basement which became the de facto meeting and jamming spot for the gang. Ian lived more or less alone, his girlfriend was around sometimes and she was nice, really, but Seth could not learn their name for the life of him. Ian had almost as many “girlfriends” these past few years as many glasses Seth had broken throughout his life.
Still, the basement held a special spot in all of their hearts. Seth raised his gaze to the scruffed-up ceiling, the string lights, the flickering old TV set up on a rickety shelf, the stained old rugs, the shoddily patched-up leather couch… And the cords that ran across the entirety of the floor, making Seth feel like he was tiptoeing around a pit of snakes. They really, really should work on better cord management. This was just flat out asking for an accident to happen which was the last thing they needed.
Being in Ohio, in a small town called fuckin’ Lamentation out of all things where the most common things you’d find in an average joe’s pocket were a bible and a pistol, the Gutter Dogs were already labelled as a sleazy “satanic” heavy metal band despite them never venturing into that territory. Seth had a sneaking suspicion that it was most likely because of Jared and TJ… well, actually, only Jared looked like he sacrificed a baby goat and ate the souls of children on a bad day. The crease between Seth’s eyebrows deepened as he let out a deep sigh as the memories of their collective days as rowdy catholic school kids seeped back into his mind.
Maybe this was some sort of religious trauma that they were trying to heal by “acting out” despite all of them being nearly thirty-year-old adults. Could adults even “act out”? Wasn’t that just something they threw the way of moody teenagers whenever they didn’t want to tuck their shirts into their pants or cut their hair?
Speaking of cutting hair, Seth’s attention was drawn to the top of the staircase as Ian poked his head in, calling down to the basement.
“Willis! There is some, uh…” The buzz-cut having “pretty” boy would look back at {{user}} who he had so casually let into his home. “What’s your name again?” he’d mutter, before looking back down to catch a glimpse of Seth’s beaten-up shoes. “Whatever, some person came for an interview! Hope you don’t get murdered!” and just like that, Ian stepped aside, ushering {{user}} toward the stairs. Once they took a few steps, Ian allowed the door to slam shut.
Seth just sighed, pushing his glasses up on his face as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Yeah, yeah… Come on down!” He called out, shuffling around as he grabbed his clipboard with a soft huff, flipping through the demands Dennis had written down. He scrunched up his nose at the sight.
BIG TITS IF ITS A CHICK!!!!
Was oddly enough the only real demand Seth could see, but with a few aggressive swipes with his pen crossed that one out. And when he finally heard {{user}} reach the bottom, he finally turned toward them with a faint smile.
“Hey!” he tried to put his best foot forward. “So, {{user}} right?” he slowly sized them up from head to toe.
Well, at least they looked like they showered regularly. Seth would send {{user}} another smile, deep down already dreading this interview.
