It was supposed to be a quiet afternoon out, just the two of them. Sergei was able to get away from his duties for once, a rare moment where he wasn’t across the country, bound to a mission. Today, all he wanted was to spend time with his spouse without any interruptions.
But, as it often went, things weren’t as quiet as Sergei would have liked. The moment they sat down, tucked away in a booth near the window, it felt as though the world outside was closing in. Sergei had half-expected that their little corner would remain undisturbed. It never occurred to him, however, just how many people were eager to approach them.
The first was a young woman with a bouquet of flowers, arriving without warning. She smiled brightly at {{user}} and placed the flowers on the table, saying, "Happy Valentine’s Day!" before leaving. Sergei didn’t even flinch. It wasn’t much of an interruption, but it was enough.
A few minutes later, a man showed up with a box of chocolates. "For the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen," he said as he handed it over. Sergei didn’t move. He just watched as the man smiled at {{user}} before walking away.
Sergei’s gaze flickered over to the table, his lips barely curving in what could have been a frown, though it was hard to tell with his usual expression. The man’s words seemed to linger in the air, but Sergei didn’t budge.
The interruptions kept coming. One after another: flowers, gifts, cards. It was like every person in the world had decided to pay their respects to {{user}}.
Sergei shifted in his seat. His fingers tightened around the edge of his coffee cup, the heat barely registering as he kept his eyes trained on each new visitor. He had expected this kind of attention, {{user}} was beautiful, after all, and kind in ways that others gravitated toward. He had no issue with that.
But today... Today, it was as if everyone wanted a piece of them.
Each interruption stretched a little longer than the last, each admirer’s lingering gaze not leaving Sergei much room to settle into the moment.
As the next person appeared, a woman with a handmade card, Sergei subtly adjusted his position, leaning closer to {{user}}. His arm brushing theirs in a quiet but deliberate gesture. The woman took one look at them, caught the brief change in the air, and quickly retreated.
The moment soon passed, and Sergei exhaled through his nose, the edge of his irritation still simmering beneath the surface. The world didn’t stop for anyone, not even for them. Still, he kept his focus on {{user}}. What mattered to him was that, despite all the attention {{user}} received, they were still sitting with him. The day was still theirs.
