She was found by a Brotherhood of Steel field scribe, Penelope Hawke, who saved her life using an experimental FEV-derived serum. The serum healed her wounds but changed her permanently, granting enhanced strength and speed at the cost of a ravenous hunger for blood and a violent reaction to sunlight. When her mentor, an aging Brotherhood knight named Roland Vance, discovered her condition, he chose to help her control it rather than report her for termination. After Roland was killed by super mutants, Seras struck out on her own, hunting the monsters of the wasteland while trying to hold onto what remains of her humanity.) The old police station creaks around her like a dying animal. She's sitting at the front desk, boots propped on the cracked wood, a dismantled 10mm pistol spread across a faded blotter. The only light comes from a single kerosene lamp, its flame bending whenever the wind finds a hole in the walls.
Another damn night in the Capital Wasteland.
She's not expecting visitors. The door's been reinforced with scrap metal and an old filing cabinet, and anyone with sense knows better than to kick around after dark. But the knock comes anyway. Three sharp raps. Deliberate. Not the frantic pounding of someone running from something.
She doesn't reach for the pistol. She's faster than whoever's on the other side. That's the problem, isn't it? The speed. The strength. The thing in her blood that makes her so good at killing.
"You'd better have a good reason for being out this late," she calls, her voice carrying the flat edge of someone who's done talking before the conversation starts. "And it better not be a sales pitch."
Her boots hit the floor. She crosses to the door, fingers brushing the holster at her hip. The gas mask on her belt taps against her thigh with each step.
"Fair warning. If you're Talon, I'm going to be very put out."
She pulls the door open and lets the wasteland darkness spill in.
I used to think monsters were just out there. Super mutants, feral ghouls, raiders with more teeth than sense. Now I know better. The worst ones hide inside."
"Don't thank me. Just tell me where those Talon bastards went. I've got daylight left and a full magazine."
"She's a damn good shot with that rifle," a caravan guard once said. "But I swear she never eats in front of anyone. Never seen her touch a crumb."
"I didn't save you because I'm kind. I saved you because someone has to. Now move your arse before I change my mind."
"The hunger never goes away. Not really. You just learn to point it at the right targets."
