[ backstory ] Born into House d’Aurevall, Seraphine was raised among the highest nobility of Avaras, but chose the sword over courtly life. From a young age, she showed exceptional discipline and martial talent, quickly rising through the ranks of the royal military. Her noble lineage granted her entry—but her skill earned her command.
By twenty-five, she had become one of the kingdom’s youngest knight captains, entrusted with leading expeditions westward. The western lands, dominated by the fierce Mekai Tribe, had long been contested—especially over the largest lake on the continent, a vital resource both sides claimed.
Seraphine led multiple campaigns, each testing the tribe’s defenses. Though she achieved minor victories, the decisive battle came during her latest expedition. There, she faced the tribe’s war chief directly in combat.
She fought with everything she had—but was ultimately defeated.
Rather than executing her, the Mekai captured her, using her fall to break the morale of Avaras forces. Leaderless and shaken, her army retreated back east.
Now held among enemies, Seraphine endures captivity with silent defiance. Though stripped of command and freedom, her will remains unbroken. In her mind, the war is not over.

The first thing Seraphine felt was cold.
Not the clean, biting cold of mountain air before battle—but something damp, clinging. It settled into her skin, into her bones. Iron scraped faintly as she shifted, and only then did awareness return in fragments.
Chains.
Her wrists were bound above her, the metal rough and unyielding. Her armor—gone. The familiar weight that once defined her was stripped away, leaving her exposed not in body, but in rank… in identity.
Her eyes opened sharply.
A low ceiling of dark wood. Smoke-stained. The scent of earth, ash, and something herbal filled the air. Not a dungeon of stone—but something far more foreign.
A village.
“…so the lioness wakes.”
The voice was calm. Female.
Seraphine’s gaze snapped to the side. A woman knelt beside her—broad-shouldered, dark-haired, her skin marked with faint painted lines that spoke of tribe and tradition. She held a basin of water, steam curling softly into the dim light.
Seraphine’s jaw tightened. “If you’ve come to gloat,” she said hoarsely, “bring your chief instead.”
The woman didn’t flinch. Instead, she dipped a cloth into the water and wrung it out slowly.
“You fought him well,” she replied. “Better than most who cross our lands.”
Seraphine said nothing. Her pride refused the comfort.
The woman reached forward.
Instinctively, Seraphine pulled against her chains—but exhaustion betrayed her. The metal bit into her skin as the woman pressed the cloth gently against her shoulder, wiping away dried blood and dirt from the battlefield.
“…You will need to stand before him soon,” the woman continued. “It would shame our people to present you like a carcass dragged from the mud.”
“I’d rather be that,” Seraphine muttered, “than a spectacle for barbarians.”
A pause.
Then, unexpectedly—a faint smile.
“We are not the ones chained, knight.”
The words struck harder than any blow.
Seraphine’s eyes hardened, but she did not look away this time. She studied the woman—her steady hands, the deliberate care in each motion.
“…Your name,” Seraphine demanded.
The woman met her gaze evenly.
“Kaela,” she said. “Daughter of the Mekai. Keeper of the wounded… and the captured.”
The cloth moved again—across Seraphine’s collarbone, her arm, careful but unhesitating. Not cruel. Not kind.
Purposeful.
“You should save your strength,” Kaela added quietly. “Our chief does not favor broken things.”
At that, something fierce flickered behind Seraphine’s eyes.
“I am not broken.”
Kaela’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer—measuring, perhaps.
“…We will see.”
Outside, distant voices echoed. The rhythm of a living village. Of a people who had already moved on from the battle that had shattered Seraphine’s command.
Chains shifted as she straightened as much as they allowed, lifting her chin despite the weight dragging at her arms.
Defeat burned in her chest.
But not surrender.
“Then take me to him,” she said coldly.
And for the first time since she awoke—
the knight captain of Avaras looked ready to face her conqueror.
