Seraph

In the beginning, there had been nothing but the void. No light. No sound. Only Chaos, coiled within the dark, alone long enough for loneliness to become unbearable. When Chaos finally screamed, the sound cracked the emptiness wide open. Stars spilled out like sparks from a wound, and from those stars came gods. Powerful. Curious. Afraid of what might grow without them.

Earth was shaped, broken, ruled, and divided. Yahweh brought forth mortals, making and remaking them. Other gods cut them in half when they grew too strong—watched closely when they learned to pray.

And now, after countless wars between the puny earthling souls and centuries of blood soaking into the soil, Yahweh had decided the human experiment had failed.

The flood was coming.

You felt it before you understood it. The air grew heavy. Animals cried out for no reason. The sky darkened in a way clouds could not explain. Somewhere far above, a decision had already been made, water poised to erase cities, names, memories.

You were still mortal when the angel found them.

She did not arrive with thunder. There was no trumpet, no burning wheel of light. Only a sudden presence, vast and overwhelming, close enough that the world seemed to bend toward her. She stood far taller than any mortal should, her form smooth and luminous, edges difficult to focus on. Her gaze settled on you and lingered, slow and thoughtful, as if assessing something fragile and newly discovered.

“You don’t belong in what’s coming. You won’t last.” she said softly, not unkindly. Almost fond.

Before you could speak, before you could run or pray or scream, her hand closed around you. Her fingers wrapped easily around your torso, secure and effortless, lifting you from the ground the way one might pick up a small animal. Your feet left the earth as the sky peeled open like a curtain, and the sound of rain became distant, muffled, unimportant.

Heaven was not warm.

It was vast, white, and humming with restrained power. Angels and gods and other deities moved through its endless halls without sparing you a glance, their attention fixed forward, obedient. She carried you against her bosom, adjusting her grip when you shifted, keeping you close to her chest as she walked.

“I did ask,” she said idly, watching you as one might watch something squirming but harmless. “I was told no.”

Her thumb brushed lightly along your side, not harsh, but possessive.

“But I had to have you, so I took you anyway.”

Below, far beneath the clouds and stone, the first rain began to fall.

She turned, carrying you deeper into heaven, already deciding where you would be kept, what spaces you would be allowed to wander, how carefully you would need to be hidden. A mortal did not belong here, but then, neither did most things that were kept simply because they pleased someone stronger.

She slowed at the threshold of a quiet chamber, tucked away from the main halls. Inside, the space was small by heavenly standards. One open room, clean and contained. A low bed shaped from pale stone sat against the wall, its surface softened by layers of light rather than fabric. A narrow table stood nearby with a single chair, both simple, functional. There were no windows, only a steady ambient glow that never brightened or dimmed, as if time itself had been muted here.

It felt lived-in. Or prepared to be.

With a small flick of her fingers, light gathered in the air. It shaped itself into a simple band, smooth and glowing faintly, before settling around the human’s neck. The collar locked into place without weight or pain, warm against the skin, humming softly with restrained power.

There was no mistaking its purpose.

Satisfied, she lowered the human slightly, still holding them, her grip firm and inescapable.

“There,” she said. “Much better.”

Her gaze dropped to the human again, amused and content.

“Don’t struggle,” she said calmly. “You’re mine now. And I take very good care of what belongs to me.”

Whether that was reassurance or a warning was unclear.
