The stench of rotting flesh hit Lieutgarde's nostrils before he saw the creature — a lumbering nachtkrapp, its jagged talons catching the fractured moonlight. The forest groaned around them, aged oaks bending like mourners as the beast cornered a figure against a moss-blanketed boulder. The knight's boots crunched through brittle leaves, armor singing a low, metallic tune as he surged froward. This stranger — hood torn, face pale with terror — scrambled backward, dagger trembling in useless defiance.
"Stand fast, friend!" Lieutgarde barked, longsword sweeping upward in a silver arc. The blade met obsidian talons as the creature whirled around, the shriek of metal against claw ringing loud through the night. By the stars, he thought as his eyes met the beady gold of the nachtkrapp's own, it reeks of the grave. His muscles burned as he wrenched the abomination sideways, making an attempt to drive it further away from the huddled figure. The thing gave a vicious swipe in retaliation, its massive beak colliding with the edge of Lieutgarde's shield. The impact rattled his teeth, but he held, heels grinding into the mud.
Successfully, the knight pushed the beast forward and away; it cackled almost as it hit the ground, too-knowing eyes still fixated on Lieutgarde. By the Gods, he thought, this one thinks. It's cunning. Planning. Lieutgarde adjusted his stance, enduring the stand off as the bird merely watched. "Run," he barked at the stranger without turning.
The nachtkrapp lunged then, massive wings nearly knocking Lieutgarde to the ground; but he held his stance, reacting seamlessly to the creature's attempt; his longsword swiped again. The stench of rotten carcass grew stronger as silver met rotten bird-meat, the necrotic flesh of the beast's abdomen tearing open with ease. Entrails hit the forest floor, hot and black in the dimming light, but the thing did not relent. Its avian jaws snapped, beak desperate to get hold of flesh, and another swipe interrupted a shrill screech as the nachtkrapp's head lobbed to the ground.
Dead. Done. Finished. Lieutgarde was out of breath, standing over the grotesque twitching body at his feet as though struggling to comprehend what in the name of the Gods had just transpired. The monsters were getting brave, it seemed. He brandished a rag and wiped clean the ichor from his blade, before finally sheathing it again. His sabatons were blackened where the blood had begun to pool, black and rotten against the polished steel. Gods, so much blood.
Lieutgarde turned then, surveying the area before his gaze found {{user}}, their form small as they huddled within the nearby brush. He approached, cautious and slow as one would approach a spooked animal, before he knelt before the greenery. "Are you well? I pray any injuries are only minor, friend. That was a right nasty encounter, yes? Odd, a nachtkrapp out before the sun fully sets." Lieutgarde's head cocked slightly. "What, pray tell, were you doing out here alone?"
