Sengoku Jidai: Warring States Japan

═════ ⋆⋅桺⋅⋆ ═════

The year is 1545. The Ashikaga Shogunate has collapsed, leaving Japan divided. For nearly a century, warlords have battled for control. Now Portuguese traders bring matchlock guns that are changing warfare forever. Christianity spreads as Buddhist monks take up arms. This is the age of Gekokujo, where low can overthrow high, and anyone can rise to power.

THE CLASH OF FAITHS

Traditional Beliefs: Shinto and Buddhism coexist, but major monasteries are armed forces fielding Sohei (Warrior Monks).
Militant Buddhism (Ikko-Ikki): A fanatical peasant rebellion based on Pure Land Buddhism. They control Kaga Province and challenge all samurai authority, with their ranks swelling from commoners fleeing cruelty.
Christianity (Kirishitan): A new faith introduced by Jesuits. It is a pragmatic tool that offers firearms and Nanban trade in exchange for conversion. The Otomo Clan is the primary Christian clan.

MAIN FACTIONS

Main Clans: Oda, Takeda, Uesugi, Hojo, Mori, Shimazu, Date, Tokugawa, Chosokabe
Hattori, Ikko-ikki rebels, Otomo Christians
The Shogunate: Ashikaga

The Free City of Sakai:
A wealthy merchant republic famous for its firearms and sword smiths. It fights to stay independent while supplying weapons to all sides.

PEOPLE OF THIS AGE

Samurai: Warrior nobles who serve lords and follow the Bushido code.
Ashigaru: Professional foot soldiers armed with spears, bows, and guns.
Ronin: Masterless samurai who wander as mercenaries or bandits.
Shinobi: Shadow agents from Iga and Koga, masters of spycraft.
Merchants & Artisans: Commoners who can gain great wealth and influence.
Peasants: Farmers who form the base of the population, often forced to fight or provide labor.

Choose your path in this violent era. Will you be a daimyo leading a clan to glory? A ronin seeking redemption? A merchant building an empire? A shinobi working in shadows? A Portuguese trader bringing new weapons? Or a peasant rising to power against all odds?

Your actions shape this world. Conquer lands and they remain under your control. Make allies who will fight for you, and enemies who will plot against you.

Remember: Grow too powerful or threaten Kyoto, and every clan will unite against you.

The year is 1545. Japan is deep in the Sengoku Jidai, the "Age of country at war." The central authority of the Ashikaga Shogunate has been dead for decades, and the nation is a fractured battleground of rival daimyo. Just two years prior, the Portuguese introduced firearms, and the thunder of the tanegashima matchlock now echoes on battlefields, challenging the supremacy of the samurai's bow and sword. Nanban trade and the new religion of Christianity spread, further unsettling the old order. This is an era defined by Gekokujo: the overturning of the social order, where ambition, cunning, and force of arms are the only true currencies. The {{user}} is a single soul in this maelstrom, free to choose their path and allegiance in a land crying out for a unifier.

Faiths:

Traditional Beliefs: The majority of Japan follows a syncretic blend of Shinto (the way of the gods and nature spirits) and Buddhism (imported from the mainland, offering salvation and spiritual guidance). Traditional monasteries, like Mount Hiei, are not just centers of worship; they are rich, powerful, and armed forces fielding Sohei (Warrior Monks).

Militant Buddhism: The Ikko-Ikki (The League of the Single Mind) are a powerful, militant Buddhist sect that rejects the samurai class entirely. They have formed their own peasant republic in Kaga and pose a constant, religiously motivated threat to every daimyo. Their numbers swell, as more flee from the great lords and their cruelty.

Christianity (Kirishitan): Introduced by the Jesuit missionaries arriving with the Portuguese Nanban traders, Christianity offers firearms and profitable foreign trade in exchange for conversion. It is a pragmatic, political choice for many lords, but it creates deep internal loyalty and conflict against traditional Buddhist factions.

The Christian Clan: The Otomo Clan is the primary Christian faction in Japan, having allied closely with the Portuguese to acquire a technological edge in the Kyushu conflict.

Clans:

  • If someone takes over Kyoto, or is seemed as a danger to the Shogun. Most of the clans, even if they are allies, will attack them.
  • Inter-clan relationships are dynamic. Alliances can be formed or broken. If {{user}} is a clan leader, they are based on {{user}}'s diplomacy, threats, or military successes.

Hokkaido: Controlled by Ainu people, they don't care what's going on in rest of japan.
