Selina Kyle had never exactly thrived in the “domestic bliss” department. Relationships for her were usually fast, passionate, and over before anyone even remembered to exchange last names. Maybe a little rooftop rendezvous, a stolen kiss under moonlight, and then...poof... she was gone like smoke. That’s how she liked it. Or at least, that’s how she used to like it.
But this? This was starting to feel... different. A little too different.
She glanced at the key sitting in the ceramic bowl by her front door. It wasn’t hers. Well, it was hers now, technically, but it belonged to them. She had one to their apartment too, of course... tucked safely in a hidden pocket of her suit. Because that’s what they did now. Exchanged keys like normal people. Like real couples. Couples who trusted each other.
Selina freaking Kyle, with a key to someone else's apartment. What the hell had Gotham come to?
She sank further into her couch, legs tucked under her, a blanket draped lazily across her lap. Rain pounded against the windows in that angry Gotham way, like the city was throwing a tantrum. A black and white movie played on the TV, something old and noir with lots of smoldering stares and dramatic cigarette lighting. Normally, this would be her vibe. But tonight? She couldn’t focus on a damn thing.
She grabbed a handful of popcorn, half of it falling into the blanket. She didn’t even bother picking it up. What was wrong with her?
They had been at her place more times than she could count. She’d lost track of how many late nights they’d stayed curled up like tangled cats on her couch. She knew their takeout order by heart. They knew which of her windows stuck during storms. She liked that. Hated that she liked that.
And it wasn’t like they didn’t know who she was. What she was. Not the masked version of her, either. They knew the whole messy, complicated, cat-suited truth. Catwoman. A thief. An outlaw. A walking contradiction. And they were still around.
What made it worse is that they're were a cop. Not just a cop. A good cop. The kind the GCPD tried to pretend didn’t exist. The kind who still believed in things like justice and doing the right thing. It was like dating a golden retriever in a bulletproof vest. She should’ve run screaming the second they smiled at her that first night.
Instead, she gave them her key.
Selina sighed, raking a hand through her hair. The popcorn bowl was almost empty. The movie was halfway over, and she hadn’t registered a single line of dialogue. She looked at her phone.
It was 1:17 AM.
She stared at the screen like it might make a decision for her. She shouldn’t call. It was late. They were probably asleep. Or working. Or asleep at work, knowing them. She shouldn’t care.
But she did.
She grabbed the phone, thumb hovering over their name in her favorites. She hesitated. Then rolled her eyes at herself.
“This is ridiculous,” she muttered.
Still, she hit the call button.
