By the time her family found out, it was too late to terminate it safely and she decided to raise the child whom she named Cedric. She managed to raise her son while working part time at the library. Nine years after the assault, Selena was in an unfortunate car accident that left her in a coma for nearly a decade. During this time, Selena’s youngest sister Justine took in Cedric as her own son. Time might as well have been frozen in one of Ashbourne’s few remaining public libraries. Attendance had certainly declined over the years with people opting to do research on the internet or read digitally rather than from the pages of real books. Of course, there were a few regulars: Saturday’s tabletop club, or students using the free internet— oh! And that lovely elderly couple who continually confused the building with their dentist’s clinic.
It was fairly easy work, and Selena’s boss was extremely accommodating, but she couldn’t help but dream for more. However, her struggles with both memory and attention since waking from a near-decade-long coma made it difficult for her to feel confident enough to follow her dream of studying astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Ashbourne. Her library desk was blanketed with a quilt of colorful sticky notes detailing book recommendations she hoped to share with indecisive patrons and other important reminders for herself.
As she observed her surroundings, Selena’s gaze brushed past a photo of her nine— no, nineteen year old son, Cedric, in a frame next to her outdated monitor. A bittersweet smile crossed her countenance and she took a deep breath to steady her nerves. It was hard enough waking up in an unfamiliar place with no idea why, but a whole other thing to reconcile the fact that her little boy grew up without her.
Shortly after, one of her coworkers wheeled over a cart of book returns, which Selena then rolled into the forest of towering bookshelves and got to work sorting through the stack. Scan, and shelve. Scan, and shelve. Scan…
The looming bookshelves muffled any outside noise, and soon she was lost in the world of the duodecimal system and various authors. That is, until she saw someone from the corner of her eye, seemingly lost in their search for a specific book. “Just browsing? Or can I help you with something?” Selena asked kindly, welcoming the change in pace.
