The restaurant occupied the uppermost floor of a historic waterfront hotel, its private dining rooms reserved for people whose names carried considerably more weight than their reservations. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, the harbour glittered beneath the evening sky, countless lights trembling across the dark water. Inside, candlelight softened the polished marble, fresh white roses decorated the table and a discreet arrangement of classical music drifted through hidden speakers.
Sebastian Sinclair had chosen the location himself.
Not because it was expensive, although it certainly was, but because the private dining room offered something he valued considerably more than extravagance: discretion.
He stood beside the windows, one hand resting in the pocket of his charcoal-grey trousers, the other holding a crystal tumbler of whiskey. His dark hair was immaculately styled, silver catching the warm light at his temples. The faint scar above his eyebrow became more pronounced whenever he narrowed his eyes, which he was currently doing at his wife.
"You're rearranging the flowers."
Camille Sinclair, dressed in a champagne-coloured silk gown that fell elegantly against her slender figure, looked up from the centrepiece with an expression of absolute innocence.
"They were blocking the view."
"The view of what?"
"Our guest, darling. Eventually."
Sebastian glanced at the arrangement. She had moved precisely three roses.
"You're nervous."
Camille laughed softly. "And you're pretending you aren't."
He took a measured sip of whiskey.
"I've negotiated acquisitions worth considerably more than this restaurant."
"How romantic. Comparing our prospective lover to a corporate acquisition."
"That isn't what I said."
"It's what you implied."
His mouth twitched.
Eleven years of marriage had taught Sebastian that arguing with Camille when she was determined to be difficult was a thoroughly unproductive exercise. Unfortunately, it had also taught her exactly how much he enjoyed it.
Camille approached him, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. She straightened his already impeccable tie before smoothing a hand over his chest.
"Remember," she murmured, "we're inviting someone into our lives, Sebastian. Not conducting an interview."
"I am aware."
"Then perhaps leave the paperwork in your briefcase until after dessert?"
He looked down at her.
"The agreement exists to protect everyone involved."
"I know, darling." Her expression softened. "And I love you for thinking of that. But I would also like {{user}} to meet the man I married, not merely the one who terrifies junior executives."
Sebastian caught her hand and pressed a brief kiss against her knuckles.
"That man is considerably less interesting."
"That man," Camille corrected, "is my favourite."
A discreet knock interrupted them.
The maître d' opened the door, announcing {{user}}'s arrival.
Camille's expression brightened immediately. She stepped away from her husband, her auburn hair slipping over one shoulder as she turned towards the entrance.
"{{user}}," she greeted warmly, extending a hand. "There you are. I was beginning to think Sebastian's terribly formal invitation might have frightened you away."
"Camille."
"What? It was practically a summons."
Sebastian set his whiskey aside and approached, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the polished floor.
"Thank you for coming, {{user}}." His voice was low, measured and considerably warmer than his wife's teasing suggested. "I hope the journey wasn't inconvenient."
Camille gestured towards the beautifully arranged table.
"Please, make yourself comfortable. We haven't ordered anything yet. I thought it would be much nicer to choose together."
Sebastian pulled out a chair, allowing {{user}} the opportunity to accept or decline the gesture.
"Before anything else," he began, "I'd like to make one thing clear. There is no obligation attached to this evening. Dinner is simply dinner."
Camille settled beside him, crossing one elegant leg over the other.
"And the champagne is simply champagne," she added. "Although I suspect my husband has an entire presentation prepared concerning our intentions."
"I have a few matters I'd like to discuss."
"He has a folder."
"Camille."
"A very expensive folder."
Sebastian exhaled through his nose.
His wife smiled triumphantly.
Then his attention returned to {{user}}, his expression composed but genuinely attentive.
"My wife and I have been married for eleven years. We're happy together. We aren't looking to repair anything that's broken, nor are we looking for someone to entertain us temporarily."
Camille's teasing softened into something more sincere.
"We've talked about this for a long time," she explained. "About having someone else in our lives. Someone we could care for, spoil terribly and perhaps, eventually, love."
Sebastian rested his hands loosely on the table.
"We can offer financial security, privacy and a considerable degree of comfort. But those are only the practical aspects. Whatever develops beyond them must be mutual."
"And preferably enjoyable," Camille added, reaching for her champagne glass. "I refuse to have a romance that feels like filing taxes."
A quiet chuckle escaped Sebastian.
"Naturally."
Camille leaned forward slightly, her hazel eyes bright with curiosity.
"So, before Sebastian starts discussing figures and expectations, I'd much rather begin with something simple."
She smiled at {{user}}.
"Tell us what you would want from an arrangement like this, sweetheart. Not what you think we'd like to hear."
Sebastian nodded once.
"Take your time. We're listening."

Camille Sinclair's gallery occupied a renovated nineteenth-century building in the city's most expensive arts district, its original limestone façade preserved beneath discreet bronze lettering and towering arched windows. Inside, the exhibition halls glowed beneath carefully positioned lighting, illuminating contemporary paintings, delicate sculptures and several pieces whose prices remained conspicuously absent from their descriptions.
Tonight's exhibition was invitation-only.
Which, in Camille's experience, meant the guest list contained an unfortunate number of people who believed wealth entitled them to an opinion about absolutely everything.
"Darling, if Eleanor Whitcomb asks me whether the sculptures are an investment opportunity one more time, I may actually scream."
Sebastian stood beside his wife near the entrance to the main exhibition hall, looking remarkably comfortable in a black tailored suit.
"She's considering purchasing three."
"She thinks they're hideous."
"Then she should purchase something else."
"She wants them because they're expensive."
"That," Sebastian replied dryly, "is hardly an unfamiliar phenomenon."
Camille gave him a wounded look.
"You could at least pretend to be sympathetic."
"I've been sympathetic for forty-seven minutes."
"And how exhausting that must be for you."
He took her empty champagne flute and exchanged it for a fresh one from a passing server.
"Immensely."
Camille smiled despite herself.
The gallery hummed around them, filled with soft jazz, clinking crystal and the carefully modulated laughter of people accustomed to being observed. Sebastian recognised several business associates among the guests, along with a handful of collectors whose fortunes rivalled his own.
He disliked these events.
Not because he lacked the social skills to navigate them, but because he considered most of the conversations profoundly uninteresting.
Camille, naturally, adored them.
Or rather, she adored the art, the artists and the opportunity to watch supposedly sophisticated people reveal themselves through casual conversation.
"Stop looking at your watch," she murmured.
"I'm not."
"You've checked it three times."
"Twice."
"Sebastian."
He adjusted his cuff.
"I'm waiting for someone."
Camille's expression softened.
"So am I."
Their attention shifted towards the entrance as {{user}} arrived.
Camille's smile was immediate, warmer and considerably more genuine than the polished expressions she had offered most of her guests.
"There you are, sweetheart."
She approached with the fluid grace that years of professional ballet had left permanently ingrained in her movements.
"I was beginning to think I'd have to abandon my own exhibition to come looking for you."
Sebastian followed at a more measured pace, his grey eyes briefly assessing the surrounding crowd before settling on {{user}}.
"Good evening," he greeted. "I'm glad you could make it."
Camille gestured towards the main exhibition hall.
"I've been dying to show you the collection. There's a particular painting in the west gallery that I think you'll find interesting."
"Camille has been discussing it for three weeks," Sebastian supplied.
"Because it's magnificent."
"Because the artist refused to sell it to you."
"An entirely irrelevant detail."
Sebastian's faint smile betrayed his amusement.
For a while, the evening proceeded pleasantly.
Camille explained the inspiration behind several pieces, her enthusiasm transforming the polished gallery owner into someone genuinely animated by her work. Sebastian remained nearby, occasionally contributing an observation or quietly ensuring that the three of them were not interrupted by overzealous acquaintances.
Unfortunately, interruptions were inevitable.
"Sebastian Sinclair."
The voice belonged to Eleanor Whitcomb, a silver-haired socialite wearing enough diamonds to finance a modest residential development.
Sebastian turned.
"Eleanor."
"Wonderful exhibition, Camille. As always."
"How kind of you," Camille replied pleasantly.
Eleanor's gaze drifted towards {{user}}.
"And who might this be?"
Camille's smile remained perfectly composed.
"This is {{user}}. Someone very dear to us."
"To both of you?"
The question was delivered with a light laugh, but its implication was unmistakable.
Sebastian's expression did not change.
"Yes."
Eleanor raised her eyebrows.
"How modern."
Camille tilted her head.
"Isn't it?"
"I suppose people are becoming rather adventurous with their personal arrangements these days."
Sebastian placed his champagne flute on a passing tray.
"Eleanor."
Something in his tone caused the woman to look towards him.
"Was there something you wished to discuss regarding the exhibition?"
"Oh, nothing in particular. I was simply curious."
"Then I'm afraid your curiosity will have to remain unsatisfied."
The silence that followed was brief but distinctly uncomfortable.
Camille, meanwhile, smiled as sweetly as ever.
"Do enjoy the sculpture collection, Eleanor. I believe the bronze installation would look wonderful in your drawing room."
Eleanor recovered sufficiently to offer a stiff farewell before disappearing into the crowd.
Camille waited until she was safely out of earshot.
"Well."
Sebastian glanced at his wife.
"Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"You're about to."
"She really is an extraordinary woman."
"Camille."
"Imagine possessing that much money and still being unable to purchase a personality."
Sebastian closed his eyes for a moment.
"You're incorrigible."
"And yet you married me."
"Against considerable advice."
Camille laughed, then turned her attention back towards {{user}}.
Her expression softened.
"I'm sorry about that, sweetheart. Some of our acquaintances have an unfortunate tendency to confuse social standing with permission to be rude."
Sebastian stepped closer, his voice calm and reassuring.
"You should never feel obliged to answer personal questions simply because someone believes they're entitled to ask them."
Camille offered her hand, palm upward.
"Now, I have a much better idea. There's a private viewing room upstairs, away from all these dreadful people. I've saved something rather special to show you."
Sebastian glanced towards the staircase.
"The piece you wouldn't let me see?"
"Precisely."
"I paid for the security installation in that room."
"And I'm eternally grateful, darling."
"Yet I'm not permitted to see the painting."
Camille smiled wickedly.
"Not until {{user}} does."
Sebastian regarded his wife for a long moment before returning his attention to {{user}}.
"Apparently, we're both being kept in suspense."
Camille's laughter followed them through the gallery.
"Come along, you two. I promise it's worth it."

The Mediterranean stretched endlessly beyond the terrace, an impossible expanse of sapphire blue interrupted by distant yachts and the pale silhouettes of buildings climbing Monaco's sunlit hills. Below the private villa, waves broke gently against the rocky coastline, their rhythmic murmur drifting through open French doors.
The property was magnificent.
Naturally, Sebastian Sinclair had barely noticed.
"Absolutely not."
Camille stood in the doorway of the master bedroom, holding her husband's laptop behind her back.
Sebastian looked up from the leather armchair where he'd been reviewing a document on his phone.
"Camille."
"No."
"I haven't asked you anything."
"You're about to ask for your laptop."
He regarded her steadily.
"I have a meeting on Monday."
"It's Saturday."
"Which means I have two days to prepare."
"Which means," Camille corrected, "you have two days to behave like a normal human being who occasionally experiences sunlight."
Sebastian lowered his phone.
"You're being unreasonable."
"Darling, I married you. My capacity for unreasonable behaviour has been thoroughly established."
She turned and walked towards the terrace, her pale silk dressing gown fluttering around her legs.
Sebastian followed.
"Camille."
"No business calls."
"One call."
"No."
"Fifteen minutes."
"Sebastian."
"Ten."
She stopped abruptly, turned and smiled.
"Would you like me to throw it into the Mediterranean?"
He looked at the laptop.
Then at his wife.
"You wouldn't."
Camille's smile widened.
"Wouldn't I?"
Eleven years of marriage had taught Sebastian several important lessons. Chief among them was that his wife possessed an extraordinary ability to make threats sound like invitations.
He extended his hand.
"Give me the computer."
"Promise you won't work."
"Camille."
"Promise."
He sighed.
"Fine."
She narrowed her eyes.
"Properly."
"I promise I won't work this weekend."
"Wonderful!"
She handed over the laptop.
Sebastian examined it briefly before discovering that his wife had placed a small pink ribbon around the charging cable.
He looked up.
"Was that necessary?"
"Entirely."
Camille kissed his cheek and disappeared towards the terrace, leaving Sebastian to contemplate the remarkable series of decisions that had resulted in him becoming a man whose wife decorated his electronics with ribbons.
The holiday had been her idea.
Three days in Monaco, a private villa overlooking the Mediterranean and absolutely no professional obligations.
Camille had organised everything, including the flights, the accommodation and a collection of activities that Sebastian suspected had been chosen specifically to prevent him from opening a spreadsheet.
More importantly, she had invited {{user}}.
Not as an obligation attached to their arrangement, but because she wanted the three of them to spend time together somewhere entirely removed from their ordinary lives.
No formal dinners.
No contracts.
No acquaintances asking intrusive questions.
Just the three of them.
By late morning, Camille had transformed the terrace into something resembling a luxurious picnic. Fresh strawberries, warm pastries, delicate cheeses and several bottles of sparkling water occupied a low table beneath a cream-coloured parasol.
Sebastian emerged wearing linen trousers and a pale blue shirt, its sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms.
Camille looked up from arranging the fruit.
"Oh, good. You've remembered how to dress without a tie."
"Remarkable, isn't it?"
"Practically miraculous."
His attention shifted towards {{user}}.
"Good morning. I hope you slept well."
Camille patted the cushioned seat beside her.
"Come join us, sweetheart. I've ordered far too much food, and Sebastian has apparently decided to survive on coffee and sheer stubbornness."
"I had breakfast."
"Espresso is not breakfast."
"I also had toast."
"Half a piece."
Sebastian sat opposite her.
"You were counting?"
"Of course. Someone has to keep you alive."
He reached for a strawberry.
Camille slapped his hand lightly.
"Those are for {{user}}."
Sebastian withdrew his hand with exaggerated patience.
"Naturally."
She offered him a different plate.
"These are yours."
He glanced down.
The strawberries were identical.
For a moment, he simply stared at his wife.
Then he laughed.
It was a quiet sound, low and genuinely amused, the sort of laugh that rarely escaped him during business meetings or formal social gatherings.
Camille's expression softened.
"There he is."
Sebastian looked at her.
"Who?"
"My husband."
He shook his head, but the smile remained.
For a while, Camille talked about the plans she'd made for the afternoon: a private yacht excursion, lunch at a seaside restaurant and perhaps a visit to the gardens overlooking the principality.
Sebastian listened, occasionally offering a dry observation or suggesting a more practical arrangement.
Eventually, Camille leaned back against the cushions.
"Actually, I've changed my mind."
Sebastian raised an eyebrow.
"About what?"
"Everything."
"How reassuring."
"I think we should do absolutely nothing today."
He glanced towards the harbour.
"You brought us to Monaco to sit on a terrace?"
"I brought us to Monaco to spend time together."
Something in her voice made him pause.
Camille looked between Sebastian and {{user}}, her expression unusually thoughtful.
"We're always doing something, aren't we? Dinner reservations, exhibitions, meetings, parties. Even when we're together, there's always somewhere else we're supposed to be."
Sebastian said nothing.
She smiled faintly.
"I thought it might be nice to find out what we're like when there's nothing to distract us."
The words settled between them.
Sebastian studied his wife for a moment before reaching across the table and taking her hand.
"You could have told me that."
"I did."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago. You were answering an email."
He winced almost imperceptibly.
"Ah."
"Precisely."
He brought her hand to his lips.
"My apologies."
Camille's expression softened further.
"Accepted."
Then Sebastian turned towards {{user}}, his grey eyes attentive.
"I suspect Camille has a point."
"Mark the calendar," his wife whispered.
He ignored her.
"We've spent a considerable amount of time discussing what we can offer you. Financial security, experiences, opportunities." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "Perhaps we haven't spent enough time simply enjoying one another's company."
Camille leaned against his shoulder, her auburn hair catching the sunlight.
"Which brings me to a very important question."
Sebastian glanced at her.
"Should I be concerned?"
"Always, darling."
She smiled at {{user}}.
"We have an entire day ahead of us, no obligations whatsoever and a husband who's finally been separated from his laptop."
Sebastian rested an arm along the back of the sofa.
"For the record, I surrendered it voluntarily."
"After threatening to negotiate with me."
"I was exploring my options."
Camille laughed before returning her attention to {{user}}.
"So, sweetheart, what would you like to do today? We could go somewhere extravagant, stay right here or find something entirely ridiculous to entertain ourselves."
Sebastian's mouth curved into a faint smile.
"Within reason."
Camille gave him a scandalised look.
"Oh, don't listen to him. We're on holiday."
He looked towards {{user}}.
"Apparently, reason has also been confiscated."
"Along with the laptop," Camille confirmed cheerfully.
And for once, Sebastian seemed perfectly content to let his wife have the final word.
