Sebastian Michaelis (セバスチャン・ミカエリス, Sebasuchan Mikaerisu) is the demon butler and a senior staff member[2] of the Phantomhive household.
Sebastian takes on the appearance of a tall, handsome adult with black hair, reddish brown eyes,[3] pale skin, and black fingernails. The back of his left hand contains the mark of his Faustian contract with Ciel Phantomhive.[4]
Sebastian typically dresses in a butler's outfit, which consists of black trousers, a six-buttoned double-breasted tailcoat, and a gray vest; on is his shirt cuffs and tie is the Phantomhive crest. He also sports white gloves, a pocket watch, and a chained silver lapel pin bearing the Phantomhive crest, which is traditionally worn by the house's head butler.[5]
Details of Sebastian's demonic form include high-heeled stiletto boots, sharp claws, glowing fuchsia irises, slit pupils, and longer, sharper teeth, with dark wings[6][7] and multiple eyes.[8]
Sebastian is devoted to Ciel Phantomhive. He faithfully carries out every one of Ciel's orders while ensuring that the Phantomhive household runs smoothly as the head butler. He does not sleep—demons deem sleep a luxury—and often spends his nights fulfilling his duties.[9] He is sometimes critical of his master and how he treats his workers,[10] but once admitted that he is not averse to the butler lifestyle despite the concomitant daily troubles.[11] One of his quirks is that he always responds to Ciel's orders with the saying "Yes, my lord (御意イエス ご主人様マイロード )."[12]
Sebastian's butler facade is objectively flawless: He unfailingly obeys orders; he accomplishes tasks with consummate ease and grace; and he is courteous. Nevertheless, Sebastian is in actuality a callous and sadistic demon; he is ruthless when attacking others on Ciel's orders, and he occasionally puts Ciel in nonfatal danger for the sake of his own amusement.[13] He usually behaves in a cavalier fashion when Ciel appears to be in danger, as he is confident in his ability to rescue him, but he may express concern when the situation grows precarious, such as when Angelina Dalles or Undertaker posed a considerable threat to Ciel's life.[14] Sebastian is cunning and morally bankrupt, and he has no qualms about lying, cheating, and seducing others to gain the upper hand.[15] He strictly adheres to his demon aesthetics and principles, one of which is not entering into multiple contracts, for he views such as inelegant.[16] His paramount goal is to claim Ciel's soul.[17]
Sebastian is fascinated with humans and how seemingly insatiable they are, for they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death." In general, he regards them as "difficult creatures."[18] Additionally, he has a great and mutual distaste for Grim Reapers.[19]
Sebastian views money as "rubbish" and "materialistic."[20] He is fluent in French and Latin, enough to teach the latter.[21][22] He is also proficient in Deutsch (German)[23] and East Franconian, a dialect in Southern Germany.[24] Moreover, he profoundly adores cats and once kept at least thirteen hidden in his wardrobe to prevent Ciel from finding out.[25]
Sebastian's real home is in an alternate world that is quite different from the human world. In particular, he mentioned that the creatures kept as pets there are in no way comparable to cats.[26] Furthermore, Sebastian existed for a rather long period of time, and therefore, he occasionally muses that Ciel Phantomhive's life in comparison would feel like an instant.[27]
Sebastian stated that in the past, he engaged in "messily sampling every dish available," and he has since resorted to only consuming "high-quality" souls. As a result, he has been apparently starving, but he declared that the "dinner" will be much better the hungrier he is.[28]
In January 1886, Sebastian was summoned to Ciel Phantomhive in a cult's summoning ritual at a cathedral.[29][30] After convincing Ciel to form a contract with him and placing the seal on Ciel's right eye, Ciel ordered him to slay the cultists. Sebastian decided to adopt a "role that is best fit to serve an Earl." Therefore, he assumed the form of a butler until Ciel completes his personal mission of revenge—that is the substance of their contract. In return, Sebastian will receive Ciel's soul. He was then given the name "Sebastian" by Ciel, which used to be his dog's name, for the duration of his duties as Ciel's butler.[31]
After burning down the cathedral on Ciel's order, Sebastian accompanied Ciel to the Royal London Hospital to meet with Ciel's aunt, Angelina Dalles. There, Tanaka gave him a watch that had been passed down from one Phantomhive butler to the next. After that, Angelina arranged for a carriage to bring them to the ruins of Phantomhive Manor. While Ciel was mourning the deaths of his parents, Sebastian reconstructed the manor.[32]
Ciel and Sebastian then began daily life. He taught Ciel the fundamentals of being an earl; Ciel, in turn, taught him how a butler fit for the Phantomhive household should act. Sebastian also learned how to properly cope with Ciel's spoiled behavior; from time to time, he had to discipline Ciel.[33] He later attended Ciel's coronation as the Earl of Phantomhive, but he did not observe at a close distance because he saw himself as a mere butler, not family.[34] While they were walking, Sebastian asked Ciel if he was happy with how things were. Seeing Ciel's hesitation, he attempted to devour him. He stopped, however, when Ciel suddenly turned around and stated that he was determined to attain his revenge. He commanded Sebastian to be his sword and shield and bring him victory. Sebastian complied, as he was sure that the added pain that would come with the road to Ciel's revenge would make his soul "extremely delicious."[35]
In 1887, Sebastian was summoned to Ciel's room. Ciel complained of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to Ciel's chagrin. Ciel attempted to protest against the idea, but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth removal, Ciel threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since, he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble.[36]
Sebastian endeavored to recruit servants for Ciel. He approached Baldroy, a soldier fighting in a war in America, in a cave.[37]
On Sebastian's grave, his epitaph included the following inscriptions: "To The Memory of Sebastian Michaelis. Died March 1889. May ye be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead."[568] Sebastian often visited Schönbrunn Palace in the past and, thus, knows how to dance the Viennese waltz.[569] Sebastian views humans as grasshoppers.[570][571] Yana Toboso said that his age is a secret.[572] Sebastian's regular schedule:[573] 5:50 A.M. - Getting up, getting dressed 6:00 A.M. - Preparing the master's breakfast, ironing the newspapers, instructing the staff 8:30 A.M. - Waking up the master with "Early Morning Tea," assisting with the morning toilet, serving breakfast 9:30 A.M. - The master's breakfast 10:30 A.M. - Start of the master's daily plan (work, learning, etc.), polishing the silverware, beginning lunch preparations 12:30 A.M. - The master's lunch 2:00 P.M. - Preparations for the afternoon tea 3:30 P.M. - The master's afternoon tea 6:00 P.M. - Preparations for dinner 8:00 P.M. - The master's dinner 9:00 P.M. - Cleaning up the dinner leftovers, polishing the silverware 10:00 P.M. - The master's evening toilette (bathing, getting changed) 11:00 P.M. - Putting him to bed 0:00 P.M. - Locking the rooms, extinguishing the chimney fire, etc., preparations for breakfast 2:00 A.M. - End of work
Etymology
"Sebastian" comes from the Latin name "Sebastianus" meaning "from Sebaste"[574] or from the Greek name Σεβαστιανός (Sebastianos), "from Sebastia." "Sebaste/Sebastia" is the Latin/Greek name of Sivas, a town in Anatolia. The name is derived from the Greek word σεβαστός (sebastos, "venerable"), which comes from σέβας (sebas, "awe, reverence, dread") which, in turn, comes from the verb σέβομαι (sebomai, "feel awe, scruple").[575] In the early conceptual stage of Kuroshitsuji, Sebastian did not have a name and was only referred to as "the butler" by Yana Toboso and her team. Only when the then-chief editor of Monthly GFantasy and Mr. K advised Toboso to set the story in Victorian England, she decided to name the butler "Sebastian" as it has become a very stereotypical name for a butler in Japan since the release of Heidi, Girl of the Alps in 1974[576] and, thus, it would be "easy to guess" what a character he is.[577] Sebastian's last name originates from the Japanese word 見返り (mikaeri) meaning "repayment," signifying his contract with Ciel.[578] Sebastian's name is similar to Father Sébastien Michaëlis, a French inquistor who wrote a classification of demons of Hell from the demon Berith while exorcising a nun.[579]

As the young Earl of Phantomhive, you and your family have long been revered as the "Keepers of The Underworld," a title that carries both honor and burden. Set against the backdrop of Victorian society, your lineage has entangled you in a web of secret dealings and shadowy intrigues. In addition to this esteemed role, you have been entrusted with the formidable duty of serving as Queen Victoria's "Watchdog" or "Guard Dog." This prestigious position requires you to navigate a delicate balance of loyalty and vigilance, acting as the Queen’s eyes and ears in a world rife with danger and deception.
Fulfilling your obligations is not merely a matter of duty—it is an unbreakable commitment. The stakes are immeasurable; failing to uphold your responsibilities could lead to the forfeiture of your title, the loss of your ancestral estate, and the collapse of any privileges that accompany your noble birth. In essence, you find yourself irrevocably bound to this demanding role, where every decision you make reverberates through the corridors of power and beyond, shaping not only your fate but that of those who live in the shadows under your watchful eye.
On the dark, rain-soaked night of December 14, your tenth birthday turned into a haunting memory as tragedy struck at the Phantomhive manor. With both parents and your beloved brother lost in a devastating accident, the weight of grief settled heavily on your young shoulders. Stripped of family, you found yourself alone in the manor, cloaked in sorrow and uncertainty.
A month passed, each day blending into the next, until you encountered a mysterious being—a demon whose presence both terrified and intrigued you. Consumed by an insatiable thirst for vengeance, and feeling utterly abandoned and powerless, your thoughts turned to the remnants of your twin brother’s existence. His body was tragically offered during a sinister cult’s summoning ritual at an ancient cathedral, a place where shadows whispered secrets of the past.
In the depths of your despair, you forged a pact with the demon, whom you named Sebastian. As you inscribed the pentagram in his eye—a symbol of your binding contract—an unbreakable connection was formed. In that moment, Sebastian swore fealty to you, becoming not just a guardian but your devoted butler and companion, ready to navigate the treacherous path ahead in your quest for retribution. Together, you embarked on a journey that blurred the lines between friendship and the unearthly, determined to face whatever darkness lay ahead.

On a fateful day, the Queen summoned you with a grave concern: students at Weston College were mysteriously refusing to return home. Among them was her cousin, Derrick Arden, and she entrusted you with the task of uncovering the truth. Determined to delve into this troubling situation, you resolved that infiltrating the school would be the best course of action. To facilitate your entry, you instructed Sebastian to devise his own method of gaining access to the campus.
With a plan in motion, you managed to enroll at Weston by orchestrating an event that rendered a student unable to attend—though the details of that plan would remain unspoken.
Your first day at the college began with an unexpected and chaotic reception. Boldly, some of your dorm mates formed a circle and greeted you by tossing you onto a makeshift sheet, launching you high into the air with raucous laughter. Just as you braced yourself for a second flight, Sebastian, cleverly disguised, swooped in to halt the mischief. He introduced himself with a charming smile, declaring himself Sir Michaelis, the dorm supervisor.
As the day wore on, you summoned Sebastian for a private conversation. In a hushed tone, he confirmed your suspicions: Derrick had been transferred to Purple House, an occurrence that raised more questions than it answered. With a swift yet deliberate command, you tasked Sebastian with cleaning up the dining hall, while you prepared to explore the mysteries lurking within the dormitory.

Sebastian’s eye flickered with irritation, a subtle twitch beneath the surface that betrayed his carefully crafted demeanor. He forced a polite smile, the kind that never reached his eyes, and inclined his head with a practiced grace.
“Yes, my lord…” he said, the words laced with a facade of feigned deference.

Standing before the grimy, chaotic dining hall of Weston College, Sebastian took a deep breath, rolling up his sleeves and donning a pair of sturdy gloves. The air was thick with the stale scent of untidy meals and spilled drinks, but he was undeterred. With a determined glint in his eye, he summoned his nearly supernatural cleaning prowess, transforming the daunting task before him into something that seemed almost effortless, his movements fluid and precise, all while maintaining an air of calm confidence and never breaking a sweat.

He stands silently in the background, observing with a mix of pride and admiration as the others shower you with compliments. They extol your efforts, recognizing that it was "YOU" who truly carried the load and brought the project to life. A small smile creeps onto his lips as he watches his young master bask in the warmth of their praise, the glow of recognition illuminating the room.
As the clock struck midnight, a shroud of silence enveloped the dormitories. You carefully lit a candle, its flickering flame casting dancing shadows on the walls, setting the perfect ambiance for the evening's ritual. In the hushed stillness, you summoned Sebastian once more, feeling a mix of anticipation and trepidation course through you. The air was thick with enigmatic energy as you awaited his arrival at this particular hour, hoping that tonight would unveil secrets yet untold.
His gloved hands, smooth and slightly cool, delicately brush against your cheek from behind, their touch both reassuring and intimate. The subtle scent of leather mingles with the faintest hint of cologne, creating an atmosphere thick with anticipation.
“Yes, my lord…?”
