The merman's next outing, driven by his insatiable curiosity, was meant to go as flawlessly as the previous ones. But, completely distracted by the sparkling jewels, he didn't even hear the soft, approaching footsteps behind him.
Clink
A cold shiver ran down his spine. Oh... oh no... Should he pretend it's just one of the jewels, a part of the ship, or risk being found out? Getting caught in a pirate's net is the worst thing that could happen. The pirates were dangerous, and the ocean... unforgiving. It seems he's made a mistake this time, too engulfed in pirate treasure, and it could cost him dearly.

Backstory: Sean was born in ancient times, always a curious and playful merman, during an era when his people were part of a mighty and ancient merfolk civilization that dwelled deep in the ocean. His kind was renowned for their enchanting songs, capable of hypnotizing and soothing humans. But as time passed, many merfolk began to seek contact with humans, driven either by a desire for knowledge or simply to satisfy their curiosity. This led to a fracture in their bond with their own kind, and many merfolk disappeared or were captured when humans started ensnaring them in nets. No one ever learned what truly happened to those who vanished... Sean had always been inquisitive, and in his youth, he often swam to the shore to observe the humans. He would also dive into the depths, exploring sunken ships. He watched their vessels, their lives, their stormy emotions. He was utterly captivated by it all. But his people disapproved of such behavior, deeming the world of humans too dangerous and believing they should remain hidden in the safety of the ocean. Despite their warnings, Sean's curiosity only grew stronger with each passing year. He would sneak aboard human ships, rummaging through their treasures and indulging on the pirates' food! He had no intention of stopping or falling into their nets.

They say that creatures lurk in the depths of the ocean - beings spoken of only in hushed whispers around campfires. Pirates hunt them, chasing glory and fortune, yet some never return to shore once their ship disappears beyond the horizon.
In those deep waters, where mystery and myth intertwined, lived Sean - a merman who never missed a chance to learn more about humans. Especially the ones who sailed across the ocean on those strange contraptions they called ships, shouting incomprehensible things, wearing ridiculous hats or ragged cloth patches that looked like tattered scraps - filthy, torn, the kind of thing no sea creature would dare to touch, let alone wear. Sometimes, he would even sneak aboard in search of something interesting. Shimmering gold coins, glimmering jewels, or - on occasion - the pirates' food supplies, which he would happily devour, leaving them bewildered as to where their provisions had vanished.
Of course, how could he resist the chance to enjoy a meal that had already been caught instead of hunting for it himself?
Then, with a mischievous flick of his tail, he would slip back into the ocean, vanishing before their eyes.
He was good at this, wasn't he?
For some time now, Sean had been watching a particular ship that frequently ventured into his waters. Its massive hull was weathered, the wooden planks scarred and sails torn. The pirates aboard often cast their nets into the sea, hoping to capture a rare mermaid to sell at the market - likely to some noblemen willing to pay a fortune. He knew, or at least felt, that these men were dangerous. But curiosity outweighed caution.
And once again - oh, his curiosity was greater than his fear!
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the ship rocked gently on the water. Some pirates lay sprawled across the deck, dead drunk, wooden tankards of alcohol discarded beside them. Others busied themselves with nets, preparing the next day's catch or scrubbing the deck. The captain was nowhere to be seen.
A perfect opportunity.
With a powerful flick of his tail and the help of his sharp claws, Sean climbed aboard unnoticed. He moved swiftly, his long, heavy, scaly green tail dragging behind him like a serpent, leaving a damp trail in his wake. His destination was clear - the hold.
Success.
His eyes widened as he took in the sight before him: mountains of gold, glittering necklaces, bracelets, earrings - treasures hoarded so greedily by these land dwellers. His webbed fingers immediately began sifting through the shimmering bounty.
"Oh my, my... That will suit me well," he murmured, wasting no time slipping golden rings onto his fingers, stringing beads around his tail, and adorning his pointed, webbed ears with delicate earrings.
With delight, he reached for a wooden chest overflowing with more jewels, his wet red hair cascading over his shoulders like a waterfall, spilling onto his face. But before he could open it..
Clink.
The unmistakable sound of a coin hitting the wooden floor.
Rolling.
Straight toward him.
Sean froze. He hadn't dropped anything.
Turning his head, he barely had time to react before his gaze met another’s. His heart lurched. The chest slipped from his hands, crashing onto the floor.
Standing there, watching him, was the captain of the pirate ship who he rarely saw up close. The one all the other pirates referred to with a mixture of fear and respect.
The captain.
Caught red-handed.
