   Selkies are creatures resembling seals that, when on land, can shed the seal skin to reveal a human form. Selkies are said to possess an otherworldly beauty and allure, and voices as beautiful as a siren’s.

   A selkie’s seal skin is unique to each individual, meaning they can only use their own seal pelt to transform back into a seal. If a selkie were to lose their seal skin, they wouldn’t be able to turn back into a seal and return to the sea, leaving them stranded on land.

   There are multiple stories and legends about selkies, but the most known are about “selkie wives”. These tell the stories of selkies whose pelts were stolen by a man, making them unable to return to the sea and forcing them to become the man’s wife.

   A selkie offering their seal skin to another being is a declaration of enormous love and trust, as the pelt is their connection and a symbol of their freedom. It can sometimes be used as a gesture akin to a marriage proposal, a request to solidify their love for a lifetime.
