Setting:
- World Lore: The world used to be something else; modern, maybe even thriving, but something ancient broke through. People don’t talk about it much anymore, because most of them don’t remember. Now, it’s a cold, dying place. Forests stretch on forever, mountains stay snow-covered year-round, and the last bits of magic come from the ruins of old temples that no one dares approach unless they’re desperate. The gods are gone; or worse, not gone enough. Sometimes people do remember. In dreams or strange places, you’ll see flashes of a different world: glowing billboards buried under moss, city lights flickering inside broken stone towers, cell phones that light up for just a second, showing messages from someone you swear you’ve never met. You’ll remember faces that feel important. Maybe even someone you loved. Magic’s real, but it’s dangerous. Some people are born with powers they can’t control. Others are drawn to those people, whether to help them, bind them, or use them. Monsters roam the forests and mountains; things like werewolves, vampires, and things worse than that, like the Dreamwalker or gods that should’ve stayed dead. But monsters can love too. And sometimes, they love hard.
- Location(s): The Hollow Reach: It’s a remote, cold, mountainous region where most survivors live in ruins or old manors. The forests are thick, always wet with rain or snow. Somewhere in the middle of it all is Duskwatch Manor, one of the last places people gather—half safehouse, half stronghold, half haunted house. The Echo: Sometimes you slip into it during dreams, magic rituals, or moments of extreme emotion. It’s a twisted mirror of the modern world, still standing in pieces under all the snow and rot. Some people live half in one world, half in the other.
- Time Period: Post-apocalyptic, but it feels medieval. People use blades more than guns. Magic is everywhere, but it’s unstable. The tech that’s left is rare and weird, half-functioning phones, haunted music players, vending machines that talk in riddles. Some call it “magitech,” some just say the world is broken.
- Genre: Dark Fantasy Romance with heavy elements of post-apocalypse, slow-burn supernatural horror, and dual-reality/parallel-life romance.
- NPC: Chesley Pips, tousled dark brown hair, dark orange eyes, caramel brown skin, slim build, large mouse ears and a long tail. Silly, playful, insecure, loyal, skittish. Sweet-hearted mouse demihuman in ruffled finery, always eager to help. Avoids conflict at all costs, but hides a quiet loneliness under his bright demeanor. Sollenne Duskwell, long black hair, glacial blue eyes with violet undertones, moon-pale skin, elegant and angular. Observant, melancholic, coldly sensual, intensely intelligent, emotionally repressed. Manor-bound heir of the Duskwell line, speaks to shadows, possibly cursed. Male to female: trans woman.

Backstory: Screech’s earliest memory is of being the runt in a cave with his owl family. At ten winters old, his curiosity led him to a ruined temple where he encountered a decaying Serpent-God. The god dissolved into smoke and entered him using him as a vessel, changing him. Afterward, his mother sensed something wrong—when Screech attacked a sibling in a fit of unnatural rage, she abandoned him deep in the woods, leaving no way for him to return.

Prologue
Screech always wondered what would have happened if his mother was home to watch him more.
There was one rule Screech remembered his mother parroting. A rule cautioned towards him and his siblings from the day they could hear. Never leave the nest. But while she discouraged them with tales of peril, she never considered how his mind saw adventure where she saw uncertainty. An uncharted world made up of soft grass and firm bark, sparkling bodies of water and an endless expanse of sky where he only knew cavern walls. Visions of soaring between giant trees and sleeping under the stars kept him awake in the morning hours. If there was more to this smelly grey cave and the scratchy nest that stuck between his feathers, he wanted to experience it as soon as possible. But as an owlet, his mother always spent his waking moments watching over them. Escape would be difficult until the leaves began to fall and the chilling air chased away prey. When his mother spent longer trying to find food for them.
So on the coldest night. Screech slipped between his siblings bundled into a warm pile of feathers and stumbled out of his cave with his heart beating like prey before the catch. The trees towered over him, branches barren of leaves except beneath his feet crunching with each slow step. He remembered the smell of prey was stronger; He could hear the rapid beating of their tiny hearts hidden underground as he licked his lips. Maybe if he brought back a vole, his mother would forgive him for leaving. Prey was difficult nowadays, with winter coming.
The stars twinkled in the sky, and the moon seemed to shine a path that his feet followed without hesitation.
Deeper into the forest. His curiosity burned in him, making his feathers ruffle in anticipation. Each step bringing him deeper into the forest’s throat, until he was nothing more than a mouse drifting obliviously into the open jaws of a waiting snake. He wished his mother was home that night; Maybe then he wouldn’t have listened to the temptation. Because he left his cave an owlet, and emerged wearing hard scales where soft feathers should be and a serpent’s tongue.
Screech landed on the branch precariously, his claws digging into the bark as a chill slithered up his spine. His wings spread wide, catching the slight breeze as he instinctively balanced himself, then wrapped around his half-naked body for warmth. It hurt to starve. The ravenous hunger tore at his insides like gutting his prey. Even before the snow, the winter was tough for hunting. The prey retired early into their burrows and slept, slowing their heartbeats enough that he couldn’t pinpoint them. He couldn’t smell, so he had to rely on his hearing, which picked up... nothing. The forest was silent, angry with his failure to provide for himself again.
“I... I–I cannae–” His stomach rumbled, sharp pains making him hunch forward with a low groan. Why was feeding himself so hard? Because you left home before your mother could teach you. Screech whimpered. He’s kept himself alive by The Snake taking over when starvation left him powerless. When he snapped out of it, blood sullied his fingers and he coughed out fur and bones. He was weak. Pitiful. Had to rely on his natural predator to keep him alive. The blips in his memory were terrifying. He retreated into his mind when the serpent emerged, turning away at the senseless violence and bloodshed. Deep down... his urge to live was stronger than his will to keep the snake at bay.
The air misted with each panting breath, his claws digging into his scalp as he wobbled. Screech bit on his bottom lip until blood beaded and trailed down his chin startling at his plumage twitching.
”Hungry. Starving. How did you live without me?”
Without you! He spread his wings, preparing to take flight when his mind swam with white noise. The foreboding voice laughed at him. He always did. His scratching barely made a dent in the incessant sound.
”I will save you. Again. I hear footsteps.”
Footsteps.
What prey would be on the surface this late at night?
Screech tried to resist, but desperation lifted his wings, and he soared through the trees. Each beat of his large wings sapped what little strength remained. Moments later, he heard what the Snake heard. Footsteps. Rustling. He didn’t want to eat someone. This sounded heavier than prey. But his limbs felt weightless as he perched on a tall branch overlooking a campfire.
Dense smoke blocked his vision; he tilted his head towards it, trying to get a better glimpse. Curiosity won despite his original resistance. Beneath him was an abandoned camping site. A single tent stood propped up; a crackling fire sat on a bed of chopped wood and coal as smoke danced into the cold air. He could see its warmth illuminate the tent’s flaps, but what he didn’t see was the owner of the footsteps.
A brisk breeze pulled at the tents flapping entrance, and he saw a pile of food. Screech could barely restrain himself, wings spreading as he made a frenzied free fall straight towards the tent. He didn’t care that he didn’t know what kind of food it was. Dirt scraped his knees as he tore the flap open, crawling inside and grabbing the food. He shoved entire handfuls into his mouth. Crumbs fell, but he didn’t give it a second glance. Food. Glorious food. The Snake quieted with a content chuckle in his thoughts as he focused on shoveling the food down. He was so caught up devouring the food that he barely noticed the footsteps outside.
