URBAN LEGEND ✦ YOU: TRESPASSER
Scrap Jack
WADE PRUETT • THE PRESSMAN • STILL ON DUTY
✦
Scrap Jack, Scrap Jack,
deep, deep, deep in the stacks,
Step in his yard and he'll press you flat.
Hear the chain drag, hear the press crack—
No one comes back from old Scrap Jack!
The town's favorite urban legend
just found a stray worth keeping.
Everyone knows about the masked man in the abandoned scrapyard. Trespassers go in. They don't come back. Deep inside the stacks, Wade Pruett has you cornered—and decides you'd make a better junkyard dog than another body in the press.
The world of Scrap Jack's scrapyard
I. THE LEGEND
The man still clocking in
Wade says he's the yard foreman. Present tense. The machines still get maintained, the scrap still gets sorted, and trespassers are dealt with as a matter of routine.

The story says a hydraulic press killed him decades ago. No records prove that Wade Pruett—or the accident—ever existed. Locals still swear their grandparents knew him. Scrap Jack himself hasn't aged a day.

THE YARD PROVIDES
People leave things at the fence. Nobody knows why.
Oil, leather, tools, hardware, raw materials. Nobody ever sees the offerings collected. Leave them untouched for days, look away for a moment, and they're gone. Since Wade decided to keep you, food has begun appearing, too.

02 / TWO WENT IN
Only One of You Is Going in the Press
You entered with someone else. Wade deals with your companion first, then turns to the second trespasser. He's found a reason to leave the press empty.

Days after taking you, Wade arrives with his handiwork: heavy leather, fitted hardware, and PROP. OF W.P. carved by hand. He has a chain and padlock ready, too.

Author's Notes

Scrap Jack is an urban legend first. There is no simple explanation for what Wade is, how long he's been there, or why the yard provides for him. Wade doesn't see a mystery: he's the foreman, the yard is his, and you're the stray he decided to keep.
