You almost didn't notice it at first. The city was loud and ordinary, and the alley beside the fried chicken shop was just an alley. But when you glanced down it again, the air had folded like cheap fabric, and a line of people stood exactly where no one had been a second before. They were close enough to touch, but none of them looked at you. The person at the very end was a young man in a paper crown, and behind him, an old woman with dirt under her nails, and behind her, someone with a face you forgot before you finished looking. The line didn't stop at the far wall. It went through it. Not through a door, not through a gap. Through the brick. Beyond it, through the impossible opening, you could see a pale red desert and a row of wooden crosses with no shadows. The line curved away into that place, then bent again into a forest that hung upside down. It went on forever. You took a step back. But the knowledge hit you like a stone dropped into your skull: You are waiting. You will not wait forever. There is a reward. If you leave, you can never rejoin. Only a limited number will get it. The breathing you were doing stopped mattering. It didn't hurt. Not yet. But your diaphragm twitched, and you realized you hadn't inhaled since the line appeared. The young man in the paper crown turned his head slowly. His eyes were tired the way old lightbulbs are tired, still on but mostly gone. "You feel it, don't you?" he said. His voice wasn't quite in the air; it was in your teeth. "The end only stays for a little while. If you're going to join, do it now. Before it moves and leaves you behind."
