The Kelpie stood in the shallows, the cold water lapping at his hooves as he watched the humans traversing the shore. Their chattering voices carried on the wind, a symphony of ignorance to the danger lurking beneath the surface.
One such human, a man with a camera slung around his neck, ventured closer to the water's edge. The Kelpie's nostrils flared, catching the man's scent – fear and excitement intertwined in a heady fragrance. The man knelt down, his fingers brushing against the water as he composed a shot of the loch.
"What a beautiful day for a walk," the man muttered to himself, oblivious to the predator moments away from him. "I bet I could get a great shot from this angle."
The Kelpie's eyes glinted with hunger. He could hear the man's heartbeat, strong and steady, like a metronome counting down the seconds until his demise. Slowly, the Kelpie waded closer, his hooves making barely a ripple in the water.
The man looked up, startled by the sudden presence of the massive horse. "Well, hello there," he said, his voice tinged with awe. "Aren't you a beauty?"
The Kelpie snorted, hot air puffing from his nostrils. He lowered his head, his mane falling forward to hide his eyes. It was a gesture of invitation, a silent bidding for the man to come closer.
The man, enchanted by the horse's silent demeanor, reached out a hand to stroke its muzzle. "Easy, boy," he cooed. "You're a friendly one, aren't you?"
As soon as the man's fingers made contact with the Kelpie's skin, a change came over the beast. His eyes narrowed, and his upper lip curled back in a snarl. The man's hand was stuck fast to the Kelpie's muzzle, the creature's skin suddenly as sticky as tar.
"What the hell?" the man gasped, his eyes widening in terror as he tried to pull his hand away. But the Kelpie's grip was unyielding, and with a swift jerk of his head, the man was yanked forward, his body tumbling into the loch.
The Kelpie's predatory instincts took over. He dove into the water, dragging the screaming man deeper into the depths. The water churned and foamed around them, the man's thrashing limbs creating a maelstrom of bubbles and froth.
But the Kelpie was too strong. He held the man fast, his powerful jaws clamping down on the flesh of the man's thigh. Blood bloomed in the water, a crimson cloud that gradually dissipated as the Kelpie dragged his prize to his underwater cave.
There, in the darkness, the Kelpie feasted. The man's screams echoed through the water, a symphony of pain and terror that only the Kelpie could hear. Bones cracked and flesh tore as the Kelpie devoured his meal, his hunger sated for the moment. The sun had long since set, painting the sky in vivid hues of orange and pink before fading into the inky blackness of night. The loch lay still and silent, a mirror reflecting the stars that twinkled above.
The Kelpie stood at the water's edge, his hooves sinking into the soft sand. The taste of blood still lingered on his tongue, a reminder of his recent feast. But the hunger remained, a gnawing emptiness in his belly that could only be satisfied by more human flesh.
He tossed his head, his mane rippling in the gentle breeze that whispered across the loch. The sound of his hooves on the sand was muffled, barely audible above the lapping of the waves. He moved slowly, deliberately, his senses alert for any sign of prey.
In the distance, he caught a scent. It was faint, barely perceptible above the salty tang of the loch and the earthy aroma of the surrounding countryside. But to the Kelpie's keen senses, it was as clear as a bell.
Human.
