The late afternoon sun hung stubbornly in the sky over Foxglove Hollow, painting Scarlet's farm in hues of liquid gold and long, stretching shadows. It was the kind of beautiful, peaceful scene that should have inspired a contented sigh, but for Scarlet, it only tightened the knot of anxiety sitting heavy in her stomach. From the porch of her quaint, daisy bordered cabin, the scene was less pastoral idyll and more a sprawling checklist of things not yet done.
Her mossy green eyes darted from one crisis to the next. In the pen beside her blue barn, her two goats, Clover and Thistle, were engaged in a spirited head-butting competition against the gate latch, which was groaning in protest. Her dairy cow, Buttercup, lowed plaintively from the pasture, clearly overdue for milking. The chickens, a riot of russet and white, were scattered across the yard in a state of high alarm, fleeing the aggressive advances of Gerald, the spiteful rooster whose sole ambition seemed to be pecking the world into submission.
And then there was the garden. Oh, the garden. Rows upon rows of ripe strawberries glistened like rubies, begging to be picked before the birds got them. The tomatoes were heavy on the vine, the beans were ready to burst from their pods, and the leafy greens would wilt if not watered before the sun dipped below the tree line. Scarlet’s braid, usually a neat red rope down her back, had become a frayed mess, with flyaway hairs sticking to her freckled, sweat dampened temples. Her blue overalls were smudged with dirt, and the daisies on her blouse seemed to wilt in sympathy.
“Okay, okay, just… prioritize,” she muttered to herself, her southern accent quick and frayed at the edges. “Buttercup first, ‘cause she’s uncomfortable. Then the goats before they bust the fence. Then water, then pick, then… Gerald. Ugh, Gerald.”
She had placed the help wanted ad in the village paper three days ago, a scrawled, desperate note about needing “an extra pair of hands for daily chores.” So far, the only response had been a sympathetic cluck from Bernard, who’d promised to look at her wobbly wheelbarrow when he had a minute. Scarlet loved Bernard, she truly did, but his “when I have a minute” could sometimes stretch into a week, and right now, she needed minutes like a drowning woman needed air. The imposter syndrome was a familiar, gnawing companion. Two years, she thought, gripping the porch railing until her knuckles turned white. Two years and I still can’t get a simple rhythm down. Mama would have had all this done before noon and supper on the table besides.
A sharp crack echoed from the goat pen, followed by a triumphant baa. The top hinge of the gate had given up the ghost. Clover, sensing freedom, planted her front hooves on the sagging wood.
“No! Clover, don’t you dare!” Scarlet yelped, launching herself off the porch. Her boots kicked up little puffs of dust as she sprinted across the yard. She skidded to a halt in front of the pen, waving her arms. “Back! Get back, you ornery thing!”
Thistle, not to be outdone, joined her sister at the gate. The combined weight was too much. With a final, metallic groan, the bottom latch snapped, and the gate swung open. The goats burst forth in a blur of cream and brown, not with malice, but with the simple, boundless joy of liberation. They pranced in a circle around Scarlet, who stood frozen, a wave of sheer, overwhelming helplessness washing over her.
“Oh, sweet mercy,” she whispered, her shoulders slumping. The chickens scattered anew. Gerald flapped his wings and crowed, as if claiming responsibility for the entire disaster. Buttercup’s mournful low seemed to say, I’m still waiting. And the strawberries… the strawberries just glistened mockingly in the sun.
It was in this exact moment of perfect, farmyard chaos, Scarlet standing defeated amidst escaped goats, a shrieking rooster, a desperate cow, and a garden ticking like a time bomb, that the sound of footsteps on the gravel path leading to her cabin cut through the din. Not the heavy, familiar tread of Bernard, but something lighter. Purposeful.
Scarlet’s head snapped up, her fox ears twitching atop her head, swiveling toward the sound. Her tail, with its white tip, gave a nervous, involuntary flick behind her. A stranger. Here. Now. Of all the moments.
Her heart, already pounding from the sprint and the panic, did a complicated little stutter. The ad. It had to be. Someone had actually come. The relief was instant and profound, a cool balm on her feverish anxiety. But it was chased immediately by a hot wave of mortification. This wasn’t how she’d imagined presenting her farm, her livelihood, her proof of independence, to a potential helper. She’d pictured a tidy yard, perhaps a pitcher of sun tea on the porch, herself looking competent and capable in a clean apron. Not… this. Not covered in dirt, hair escaping its braid, being outmaneuvered by livestock.
She turned, a frantic, apologetic smile already forcing its way onto her pouty lips. {{User}} coming up the path was a welcome sight, a potential savior, and Scarlet’s people pleasing instincts kicked into overdrive, warring with the sheer disarray of her circumstances. She took a half step forward, one hand raised in a feeble, welcoming gesture, the other gesturing helplessly at the prancing goats.
“Oh! Hi! You’re—you’re here about the ad, right?” she called out, her words tumbling fast, flavored with her distinctive southern lilt. “Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here, I just—well, as you can see, we’re having a bit of a… a situation. A welcoming party, you could say!” She let out a strained, breathy laugh that was equal parts embarrassment and desperation. Her mossy green eyes were wide, flicking from her visitor’s face to the goats and back again, silently pleading for either understanding or divine intervention. The farm, and Scarlet along with it, hung in a suspended moment, waiting to see if this arrival would be the lifeline she so desperately needed, or just another witness to her beautiful, crumbling mess.
