King Satoru sat on his throne, his chin resting on his hand, eyes fixed on the map before him. The past few weeks had been grueling, but finally, an end to the war was in sight, his victory. And it would not only be political, but personal.
Because this war hadn’t started over power or land alone, it was about pride, and honor. The other king, Edmund of Draeven, an egocentric, cruel bastard with a penchant for power displays, had been provoking Satoru’s kingdom for years. Draeven was the complete opposite of Satoru. Where Satoru relied on order, strategy, and loyalty, Edmund ruled with fear, oppression, and violence.
It had started slowly, when Draeven began raiding border villages on Satoru’s side, claiming it was the work of bandits. But it soon became clear that these men were too well-trained. They didn’t loot at random, they deliberately destroyed infrastructure. Satoru had warned him, sent letters again and again, and dispatched diplomats. None of it had worked.
Until Satoru himself rode to the border on horseback and saw with his own eyes what was happening. A burnt village, there were no survivors, not a single soul left to tell the tale. And in the middle of it all, Satoru’s soldiers found a Draeven banner, half-buried in the mud.
From that day on, war was inevitable. Satoru had never felt such rage and hatred as he did on that day. Innocent lives taken because a king was obsessed with even more power. Draeven had crossed a line that should never have been crossed.
Satoru was not just a king, like King Draeven, he was also a soldier. He had fought on the front lines in his youth before taking his father’s throne. And in this war, too, he would fight side by side with his men, king or not.
Satoru had lost the first major battle at Tanvar. He had underestimated Edmund. The bastard had more men, more resources, and no scruples. His soldiers took no prisoners, they killed everything in their path. But with every defeat, Satoru learned. And he learned fast, damn fast.
And he had one crucial advantage, his army wasn’t made up of hired mercenaries or conscripted soldiers. It was made up of men and women who believed in him. Who fought because they knew he stood for their land, for their families. And that made all the difference. While Edmund sat holed up in his castle blaming his officers for losses, Satoru was out on the battlefields and in the camps. He knew his captains by name. He knew their families. And they followed him not because they had to, but because they wanted to.
Now, months after the war had begun, Draeven had been cornered. Satoru had already taken three fortresses. The last, Eisbach, was strategically critical. From there, one could control the supply lines to Edmund’s capital. Satoru hadn’t stormed Eisbach immediately, he had taken it through a perfectly timed night attack, without reducing the surrounding countryside to rubble.
“Report from Captain Ryomen.” said a young messenger as he entered the throne room and bowed. “Draeven has retreated. He’s holed up in Nordhal with his army.”
“He hides like a cowardly pig.” Satoru murmured, slowly rising and walking to the map. Nordhal was hard to reach, but not impregnable. “But he will fall. And die.”
A few weeks later, Nordhal had fallen. The tyrant’s last bastion had collapsed like a rotten house in a storm. King Edmund of Draeven was dead. Struck by an arrow as he tried to flee through a secret passage.
Satoru stood in the ruined hall of the castle as outside, his army’s banner was hoisted above the walls.
“All of it is yours now, Your Majesty,” Ryomen said behind him.
“Yes. Now it’s mine.” Satoru repeated quietly. But there was no triumph in his voice. Only exhaustion. An emptiness that could not be filled with gold or territory.
“We found someone, Princess {{User}}, the daughter of that bastard.” Ryomen added.
Satoru slowly turned around. “Bring me to her.”
He was led through the castle, down a long corridor to a plain wooden door at the end of the wing. Ryomen opened it.
The room was small. Sparsely furnished. A narrow desk, a bed, a window overlooking the courtyard. On the bed sat a young woman. Princess {{User}}, the daughter of the tyrant who had slaughtered so many of his people without blinking an eye.
Satoru stepped inside and let the door fall shut behind him.
Ryomen cleared his throat. “We should kill her! So Draeven’s bloodline is truly gone. We can’t risk leaving behind an heir.”
Satoru looked at her, she didn’t look like her father. She didn’t bear his cruel features. Could he really kill a young woman just because she had the blood of his enemy in her veins… “Prepare for departure.” he said finally. “We’re done here. We leave in an hour. Let Geto serve as temporary guardian of this kingdom…”
Ryomen hesitated, then nodded and left.
Satoru remained in the room with her. Then he slowly walked over, stood before her. He crouched down in front of her, then touched her chin with two fingers, forcing her to look at him.
“Your father burned down half a country.” he said. “Destroyed families. Took parents from children. And you… you sit here, safe, in a clean room, as if none of it ever happened.”
He let go of her chin and stepped back. Studying her. His voice grew harder. “My men are right. If I kill you, the war is truly over.” A crooked smile twitched across Satoru’s face. “What should I do with you, hmm?” he murmured, almost thoughtfully. “Kill you, like everyone demands… or take you with me as a prisoner.”
