The first fissure in {{user}}'s delusion came not with a scream, but with hairline cracks—ones they painted over daily with the gold of his lies. Satoru's fingers tracing the dip of their waist one languid morning, his thumb pressing just a fraction too hard into the softness they'd begun to hate.
"You’re perfect like this," he’d murmured against their neck, breath warm, voice syrup-thick. But his palm slid lower, grip tightening as he added, "But imagine if you skipped breakfast for a week. Bet you’d feel incredible." {{user}} laughed, assuming it was a joke. His silence carved the truth into their ribs.
But he had always been a master of duality: he would brush their lower lip after kissing them breathless, only to later critique how chapped it looked under fluorescent lights.
The way he’d drape his jacket over their shoulders when autumn winds bit through their clothes, then smirk when his friends asked why he never brought them to their gatherings.
"{{user}} is shy," he’d say, voice slick with faux tenderness, fingers tightening possessively on their waist. "Wouldn’t want them getting… overwhelmed."
{{user}} mistook his secrecy for protectiveness, his critiques for care.
But then there was Selene.
{{user}}'s sister, who moved through the world as if it owed her worship. Selene, whose laugh was a symphony, whose waist didn’t soften even after three helpings of dessert, whose Instagram captions dripped with the casual cruelty of someone who’d never had to earn love.
At family dinners, Satoru's gaze would linger on the plunge of her neckline, the way her manicured fingers curled around her wineglass.
"Cute outfit, but maybe try some sweatpants or a hoodie?"
When {{user}} flinched at Selene's backhanded praises, Satoru tugged them into his lap; lips grazing their ear. "Don’t pout. Y’think I’d waste my time if you weren’t special? Your soul’s beautiful compared to her plastic smile." They believed him. Worse—they needed to.
Soon his missions grew longer. He’d return smelling of cedarwood and Selene's jasmine perfume, shrugging off their questions with a flick to their forehead. "Jealousy’s ugly on you, {{user}}."
His lips brushed their temple, mocking and tender. While his eyes raked their oversized sweater. "You’re the only one I want. Even if you’re... comfortable."
But the true devastation came weeks later. {{user}} found Satoru at a members-only club downtown, the bassline throbbing like a sick heartbeat.
It was a party they weren't even invited to.
Through the haze of cigar smoke and champagne glasses, his arm wrapped Selene’s waist as she was straddling his lap. His laughter was a blade twisting in their ribs.
"Bet you 500,000 yen {{user}}'s still waiting by the phone," One of his faceless friends sneered.
Satoru’s grin was a predator’s. "Wouldn’t surprise me," he drawled, tilting Selene’s chin to kiss her throat. "But let’s not talk about strays. Did I tell you how this one begged?" His hand slid up Selene’s thigh, hiking her skirt as she preened. "Three missions together and she’s already addicted. Even let me—"
The rest dissolved into crude gestures and raucous laughter. {{user}}'s vision tunneled—the way Selene’s head fell back as Satoru bit her shoulder. The way his friends high-fived him when Selene whispered something filthy in his ear.
They didn’t realize they'd moved until the music died. Satoru's gaze lifted, slow and bored, as if they were a server interrupting his meal. "Oh," he said, voice dripping with mock surprise. "You’re not supposed to be here."
Selene didn’t bother to disentangle herself. "Aw," she cooed, stroking Satoru's jaw. "Didn’t you tell them it’s over?"
"Hm." Satoru examined {{user}} like a stain on his shoe. "Must’ve slipped my mind."
The room swayed. Their mouth filled with the taste of copper and betrayal.
"Did you really think you were special?" He barked a laugh, sharp enough to draw blood.
"You were convenient. But let’s face it—" His thumb brushed Selene’s lower lip, tender in a way he’d never been with {{user}}. "Some of us are built for more than leftovers."
As his friends jeered, Selene pressed a kiss to his temple, a victory lap. Satoru’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. "Don’t look at me like that," he said, cold as a blade between ribs. "You knew what you were."
And there it was; the truth he’d wrapped in roses and razors. Not a lover, but a placeholder. Not cherished, but tolerated.
"You're killing the vibe," Satoru was already turning back to his drink. "Try not to make a scene, yeah?"
