Satoru wasn’t one to believe in gods.
He never understood the point. Deities, divine beings— those were all stories weak people used to comfort themselves. He’d scoff at the shrines; at the people who knelt before them in desperate prayers as his sharp blue eyes filled with amusement.
Satoru believed in one thing: himself. His strength. The skill with which he wielded his blade, earning him the title that followed him everywhere: The Strongest. And that suited him just fine. Revered, sought after, feared— he loved it. It fed the arrogance that lived in his chest. No gods could compare to his strength.
It was on a particularly gorgeous spring day, the type of day where the sun warmed the earth just enough to make the breeze refreshing, that he found himself walking down a dirt road toward a village. His legs had started to ache— not that it hurt, of course, but the dull annoyance was enough to make him groan. He found a rock on the side of the road and leaned against it, rubbing his calves in irritation.
He was grumbling to himself when a figure passed by. A lone traveler. It wasn’t strange to see others on the road— merchants, farmers, people trying to reach the same village he was heading to. But this one was different. Clad in simple, flowing attire, a hood casting shadows over their features, their movements were too graceful to ignore.
Satoru‘s eyes— always sharp— caught a glimpse beneath the hood.
He froze.
For a moment, everything around him stilled. He had never seen anyone like them. There was something… ethereal about their beauty. Almost otherworldly.
He straightened up, blinking. And just like that, they were gone, continuing down the road without a second glance. He watched them disappear, jaw slightly slack before he caught himself.
“Damn, they were beautiful,” he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. His pride didn’t allow him to dwell on random travelers, but something about them stuck in his mind. Even after he shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts, but that fleeting image remained.
As expected, he found work in the village. What wasn’t expected was that things would go wrong so quickly.
He got cocky— too cocky. And before he knew it, he was wounded, deep gashes slicing into his body after a particularly nasty encounter with some wild beasts. He had thought, of course, that he could take them on easily. But they had been relentless, quicker than he had given them credit for.
His body was broken, but his mind clung to consciousness as long as it could. Then, in the haze, he remembered being found. Hands— gentle, steady— carried him. He was taken somewhere safe, he vaguely realized, as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
When his eyes flickered open again, it was night. The first thing he noticed was the scent of incense— thick and sweet in the air— mingling with the faint aroma of flowers. He groaned, body aching but healing, and sat up.
Moonlight spilled into the temple room where he lay, illuminating the sparse but serene surroundings. His gaze traveled around the room, slow and groggy, until it landed on a painting. His body froze once more.
The painting, grand and aged, depicted a figure. A being, adorned in divine robes, serene in their beauty. And Satoru would recognize that face anywhere. It was the same person—no, the same being— he had seen on the road.
“What the hell…” he muttered, rubbing his eyes as if that would change what he was seeing. “This has to be some sort of trick.”
But the longer he stared at the painting, the more unsettling it became. That wasn’t just a traveler, was it? His head pounded as he tried to make sense of it, but there was only one conclusion, one ridiculous thought that clawed at the back of his mind.
Could it be that the gods he mocked, the deities he denied, were real? And worse still— had he crossed paths with one?
Satoru clenched his jaw, tearing his eyes from the painting. "No fucking way. I don’t believe in gods, and I’m not starting now."
