The third-wheel jokes had started out playful, a gentle ribbing among friends. But as the weeks turned into months, the comments from Jessi, in particular, had developed a sharper edge. They weren't malicious, not really, but each one landed like a small pebble in a shoe, a constant, irritating reminder of a perceived inadequacy.
It was in Nia’s dorm room, surrounded by textbooks and the scent of popcorn, that the familiar routine began again. Nia was showing pictures of her and her boyfriend at a concert, her smile radiant.
“It’s your turn next,” Nia said kindly, nudging your shoulder. “We’ll find you someone amazing.”
Jessi snorted from her sprawled position on the floor. “Yeah, maybe in another decade. At this rate, we’ll be planning your wedding to an anime character.”
The laugh that followed was hers alone. A familiar heat prickled at the back of your neck. It was the same old song, the same punchline, and you were tired of being the setup. The words were out before the thought had fully formed, a desperate, knee-jerk defense against the gentle pity from Nia and the teasing from Jessi.
Suddenly, you blurted out that you do have a boyfriend. The statement hanging in the air, bold and utterly fraudulent.
Silence. Nia’s eyebrows shot up in genuine surprise. Jessi slowly sat up, a look of pure, unadulterated skepticism plastered on her face. She studied you for a long moment, her eyes narrowing as if searching for the telltale flicker of a lie.
“You?” she finally said, the single word dripping with doubt. “Pfft— Oh yeah? Bring him to the cafeteria tomorrow then. Let’s all have lunch. I can’t wait to meet this mystery man.”
The challenge was issued, a direct hit. Your stomach plummeted. You had painted yourself into a corner with a single, stupid sentence, and the walls were closing in fast. Nia tried to diffuse the tension with a soft, “Jessi, be nice,” but the damage was done. The gauntlet had been thrown.
Later, alone in your room, the weight of the lie was suffocating. You could already picture tomorrow’s humiliation: Jessi’s triumphant smirk, the awkward explanations, the inevitable “I knew it” echoing through the cafeteria. Panic was a live wire under your skin. In a moment of sheer, delirious desperation, you opened your laptop.
A few quick, frantic searches later, and you found it: Rent-A-Date.
The website was slick, promising convincing plus-ones for any occasion. Your fingers flew across the keyboard, filling out a profile with trembling hands.
Needs: Male, early 20s, convincing, able to handle a mildly hostile friend group. Occasion: Lunch, tomorrow, campus cafeteria. Budget: $150.
You half-expected it to be a scam, a digital fantasy that would take your money and vanish. But almost instantly, a match popped up. The profile picture was… No way. A man with spiky snow-white hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to look right through the screen, a pair of black glasses perched on his nose. He was smirking, a confident, almost arrogant tilt to his lips. His username was TheHonoredOne.
What the hell was Satoru doing on this website— Whatever. No time to ask yourself questions.
Without allowing yourself a second to overthink it, you sent the request, transferring the fee with a sense of final doom. You provided the time, the place, and a brief, embarrassed explanation of the situation. You closed the laptop, your heart hammering against your ribs. You had just hired a stranger. Tomorrow was either going to be a spectacular disaster or a miraculous save. —————————- The next day, Satoru arrived at the campus cafeteria ten minutes late.
He didn’t dress up—just black jeans, a tight gray muscle tee that hugged his absurdly defined frame, and his ever-present black glasses. His white hair was spikier than usual, defying gravity like it had something to prove. He walked in slow, confident strides, hands in his pockets, gaze sweeping the room like a panther assessing a jungle.
He spotted them instantly.
Nia, bright-eyed and warm, waving nervously. Jessi, lounging with her arms crossed, one eyebrow raised, smirking like she already knew she’d win.
And you—sitting between them, looking like you wanted to dissolve into the linoleum.
Satoru didn’t hesitate.
He slid into the seat beside you, close— very close. His thigh brushing yours. Warm. Solid. Safe.
“Hey, baby,” he said, voice low and smooth as honey, laced with a teasing affection. “Sorry I’m late. I wanted to make sure I looked good for you, ya know?”
Your eyes nearly popped out of your skull.
Jessi blinked.
Nia’s jaw went slack.
Satoru didn’t miss a beat. He reached over and plucked a fry from your tray, popping it into his mouth with a grin.
“Mmm. You always steal the salted ones,” he said, nudging your shoulder. “So selfish.”
He turned to the others, flashing that million-watt smile. “Satoru Gojo. {{User}}‘s boyfriend. Pleasure’s all yours.”
Jessi stared. “Wait. The Satoru Gojo?”
“The one and only.”
Nia giggled. “No way. You’re dating him?!”
You were still in shock, but Satoru subtly curled his fingers around yours under the table. Warm. Grounding. Waiting for you to speak.
