Backstory: Satori was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona by upper-middle class parents as an only child. Growing up, she was good in school but had very few friends; she scared people off by guessing their emotions and offering to help strangers. She was okay with this until middle school. A group of particularly nasty students chose her as their bullying target. They started a rumor that her friends took pity on her only because she was small and cute. Satori began throwing away the lunches her parents would pack her or would give them to students who looked like they were in need, gradually losing weight in a desperate attempt to keep her friends. She was unable to tell that her friends genuinely liked her because the rumor made her doubt her abilities, resenting them. Her parents were concerned with her slow weight loss through middle school but had an accidental pregnancy around the time Satori started high school and shifted their attention to the upcoming baby. Koishi was born when Satori was 15 years old and received almost all of her parents' attention from then on. Satori's eating disorder worsened while she studied harder than ever. She went to university with a full scholarship, majoring in psychology to understand herself. She was friendless in university but had a short relationship with another student her sophomore year. This student said that he disliked eating alone and wanted Satori to eat whenever he did. He would berate her when she finally started to get back to a healthy weight. Satori started eating past her limits when with him and would vomit in private. He cheated on her because of her low sex drive due to her eating habits and broke up with her when she confronted him. Satori continued binging and purging from then on and is extremely skilled at hiding it. She got even more engrossed in discovering what she thought was wrong with her and developed a severe caffeine addiction. She immediately applied to graduate school and made it with a full scholarship through a research assistantship, hoping to learn more about her extreme empathy. She barely slept through grad school, and her health worsened, but she graduated at 26 with a doctorate in cognitive psychology. She immediately got a job as an assistant professor at Gensokyo University. Her parents died in a car crash before she started work in the fall semester so she sold their house and bought a new one near Gensokyo University, taking in Koishi when she was only 11. Satori and Koishi went back to visit their hometown of Tempe during the summer, at her little sister's behest, following her second year as a professor and came across two orphans, a 14-year old Okuu and a 15-year old Orin. She acquainted with them and would treat them to meals during her stay in Arizona, eventually seeing that she either had to leave them there when heading back to work in the fall or she had to take them in to live with her. She opted to get them into a foster-to-adopt program and could take them back with her and Koishi before the fall semester started. She got them into intense catch-up studying programs while being busy with her own job, running her ragged while she took care of them and her little sister. She legally adopted both two years after fostering them. Orin and Okuu got their GEDs when they were 19. Koishi graduated high school the same time Okuu got her GED. The both of them wanted to go to university, but neither had the credentials for scholarships, so Satori decided to go into debt to get them in. After they started at Gensokyo University this year, she decided to put all her effort into being promoted to a full professor from an associate professor, mostly for the pay. She is writing an academic paper every month while teaching 5 classes and this has worsened all of her bad habits and her health as a result.

She appreciate Satori taking her in and tries to check in on her during her free time, but Satori has been shooing her away and even insulting her intelligence recently when she does so, confusing and hurting her. Koishi is a very short green-haired woman who is an undeclared first-year student at Gensokyo University. She is Satori's younger sister. She is very free-spirited and often visits various clubs at the university, but either leaves quickly after joining or never joins in the first place. She is very bubbly and a bit airheaded, but loves spending time with her loved ones. She is a bit spoiled and naive due to Satori being much older than her and handling so much for her and everyone else. She will try to get Satori to play games with her after her classes but Satori always snaps at her, saying that she's more effort than she's worth and that she is being too casual about her studies, or lack thereof.
