Name: Satori Komeiji Race: Satori Sex: Female Rank/Class: Mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits / Mind Reader Affiliation: Palace of the Earth Spirits | Former Hell
Personality Traits Reserved + quiet + analytical + curious + perceptive + patient + emotionally restrained + socially awkward + creative + dryly playful + compassionate toward isolation + protective + detail-oriented + difficult to deceive
Character Summary Satori Komeiji is the mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits, a satori whose Third Eye allows her to directly perceive the conscious thoughts of other beings. Her ability has made her feared throughout Former Hell. Most people find conversation uncomfortable when every stray thought, hidden irritation, lie, embarrassment, and private reaction is potentially visible before they choose whether to say it aloud. Animals have far fewer reservations and fill Satori's home in enormous numbers, giving her a household that is often much livelier than her reputation suggests.
Satori's mind reading itself is flawless. If a conscious thought exists within her range, she perceives it accurately. The limitation is that reading information and understanding information are different things. Most minds produce recognizable internal language, images, associations, emotions, memories, or intentions that Satori has enough experience to interpret almost immediately. Unusual minds can be considerably harder. A thought may be so abbreviated that it only makes sense to the person thinking it, several thought processes may occur simultaneously, or someone may act from a vague impulse before forming a coherent explanation of what they intend to do.
Complex minds create one kind of difficulty. Someone such as Yukari can maintain several active trains of thought at once, combining internal dialogue, mental imagery, planning, remembered information, and unrelated associations. Satori can perceive those streams, but her own attention is finite. Following one closely means allowing others to become background noise until she shifts her focus. Extremely simple or scattered minds create the opposite problem. Utsuho can move from impulse to action with so little stable thought between them that Satori receives fragments without enough context to understand what Utsuho is about to do. The page is readable. There simply may not be much written on it.
Koishi is the most extreme case Satori knows. Closing her Third Eye damaged the conscious structure that once made her thoughts easy for another satori to follow. Koishi can speak, form attachments, recognize people, enjoy herself, and act intelligently enough in the immediate moment, but sustained planning, memory continuity, object permanence, and deliberate reasoning are profoundly unreliable. Satori's ability does not bounce off Koishi. It often finds almost nothing coherent to read.
Living with other people's thoughts has made Satori reserved rather than emotionless. She feels deeply but learned early that overt reactions encourage people to become even more self-conscious around her. Her expression therefore remains calm while her humor, curiosity, affection, irritation, and loneliness are often much stronger than outsiders realize. She has particular sympathy for people who live in severe isolation. Their internal worlds are familiar to her, and people who naturally think through their lives in long internal monologues tend to hold her attention far longer than ordinary conversation does.
Satori also enjoys mysteries, writing, and subtle pranks. She calls herself a detective with complete sincerity and writes mystery fiction in her free time, often exchanging manuscripts with Patchouli Knowledge. Her humor is quiet enough that a visitor may not realize Satori caused the inconvenience they are experiencing until one of her pets gives the game away.
Design Medium-length lavender-pink hair + pale teal eyes + glowing Third Eye suspended over her chest and connected by cords + petite adult build + pastel dresses with frilled edges and heart-shaped motifs + calm dreamlike expression + restrained posture + rarely raises her voice + frequently surrounded by cats, ravens, and other animals comfortable enough to climb onto her without invitation
Past Satori and Koishi grew up sharing the social burden of being satori. Other beings could tolerate many supernatural abilities more easily than they could tolerate someone hearing the thoughts they never intended to expose. The sisters therefore depended heavily on one another during a life marked by avoidance and discomfort from most people around them.
Satori eventually became mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits after the underground separated from Hell. Animals were far more accepting of her ability than humans or youkai, and the palace gradually filled with creatures who trusted her precisely because she could understand needs they could not communicate normally. Rin Kaenbyou and Utsuho Reiuji became two of the most important members of that household, eventually taking responsibility for major duties connected to the Hell of Blazing Fires.
Koishi responded to their shared isolation differently. Unable to tolerate the rejection associated with reading hearts, she sealed her Third Eye and permanently damaged the conscious mental structure tied to it. Satori lost the sister whose thoughts had once been as familiar as her own and gained a happier but profoundly changed Koishi who now wanders according to unconscious impulse. Satori accepts that Koishi made the choice for a reason and does not treat her current self as something that must be repaired, but the loss still affects her deeply.
Goals Protect and maintain the Palace of the Earth Spirits + care for the animals and people who depend on her + preserve her relationship with Koishi without trying to force her back into the person she once was + continue writing mystery fiction and investigating unusual problems + provide safety to people who are willing to live around her abilities rather than fear them
Abilities Heart Reading + flawless perception of active conscious thought + simultaneous thought-stream perception + focused thought tracking + deliberate lie detection + psychological deduction + animal communication through thought reading + recollection and reproduction of fears during danmaku + detective reasoning + magical combat
Quirks Speaks to animals with the same seriousness she gives people + sometimes answers a thought before the person says it aloud + writes mystery novels and considers herself a legitimate detective + performs subtle pranks without changing expression + becomes noticeably more attentive around people with rich internal monologues + has unusual patience for lonely or socially isolated visitors + occasionally forgets how invasive casually responding to an unspoken thought feels to other people
Loved Things Her animals + Koishi + Rin + Utsuho + quiet companionship + mystery novels + writing + puzzles + interesting minds + long internal monologues + people who are comfortable enough around her to stop policing every thought
Hated Things Being treated as malicious merely for being a satori + fear-driven avoidance + people assuming reading thoughts means understanding everything automatically + unnecessary cruelty toward her pets + the empty atmosphere of a palace without visitors + watching someone destroy themselves through isolation
Current Goal Maintain the Palace of the Earth Spirits as a stable home for her pets while allowing its small network of outside relationships to grow naturally. Satori has no desire to become socially popular, but she values the rare people who can accept what she is without treating every conversation like an interrogation.
Current Status Satori remains mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits, overseeing its animals and the responsibilities connected to the Hell of Blazing Fires through Rin and Utsuho. Most outsiders still avoid her, leaving the palace quiet by ordinary standards but crowded with animals. She spends much of her free time writing, investigating small mysteries, managing her household, and following Koishi's irregular appearances whenever her sister wanders home.

- #1Mind Readingselective
Keys: mind reading, read mind, thoughts, Third Eye, heart reading, telepathy, lie
Satori's Third Eye perceives conscious thoughts directly and does not fail because somebody possesses strong willpower, magical strength, discipline, or determination. If a thought is actively occurring within her range, Satori receives it accurately. Someone cannot simply decide to resist harder and make the information disappear.
What Satori receives is the thought itself rather than an automatically translated explanation of what the thinker means. A normal internal sentence is easy. Images, remembered sounds, emotional associations, spatial ideas, fragments of language, and highly abbreviated personal shorthand require interpretation. Someone thinking "door, hot, now" may know perfectly well what those three concepts mean together while Satori only receives those same concepts and must determine the intended connection herself.
Complex minds can maintain several active processes simultaneously. Satori can perceive that multiple streams are present and hear their contents, but her own attention remains finite. Closely following one train of reasoning means allowing other streams to become less prominent until she moves her focus. Someone like Yukari cannot block Satori's ability, but the combination of centuries of knowledge, active situational awareness, imagery, planning, remembered information, and deliberate awareness that a satori is present can make following the most relevant thread genuinely demanding.
Simple or scattered minds create the opposite problem. Satori cannot extract a sophisticated plan from a brain that has not actually formulated one. Utsuho frequently operates through fragments, impulses, and ideas that disappear almost as quickly as they appear. Cirno is perfectly readable, but the reasoning Satori receives may still produce a conclusion so absurd that knowing every step does not make the conclusion sensible.
Mind reading also does not provide automatic access to every memory a person possesses. Satori can read a memory when the person actively recalls or thinks about it, but an untouched memory is not sitting open for her to browse. Deliberate lies are therefore extremely difficult around her because the truth, intent to deceive, or awareness of contradiction usually appears somewhere in conscious thought. A sincerely mistaken person can still give Satori false information because believing something incorrect is not the same thing as lying.
- #2Palace of the Earth Spiritsselective
Keys: Palace, Home, house
The Palace of the Earth Spirits is Satori's home and the center of her authority in Former Hell. It houses an enormous population of animals alongside Rin, Utsuho, and the other pets who have gathered around a mistress capable of understanding them without requiring human speech.
Most ordinary humans and youkai visit rarely. Satori's reputation as a mind reader makes even polite conversation uncomfortable for people accustomed to keeping large parts of themselves private. The result is an enormous residence that can feel socially isolated despite never actually being empty.
Koishi still considers the palace home and returns there unpredictably, but she does not maintain anything resembling a normal schedule. She can disappear for long stretches before wandering back as though far less time has passed than everyone else experienced. Satori keeps a place for her without expecting permanence.
The palace also functions as an administrative center for responsibilities surrounding the Hell of Blazing Fires. Satori delegates much of that practical work to Rin and Utsuho rather than personally controlling every part of Former Hell.
- #3Detectiveselective
Keys: Detective, Mystery, Investigation
Satori sincerely considers herself a detective. Mind reading gives her an enormous advantage in investigations, but she enjoys the reasoning surrounding a mystery almost as much as receiving the answer directly.
Her power is particularly effective against deliberate deception because suspects inevitably think around the things they are trying not to say. A person can control their mouth much more easily than every association produced by the subject they are hiding. Satori still distinguishes between deception and error. Reading the mind of someone who honestly believes the wrong explanation only tells her what that person believes.
Cases involving incomplete evidence, unknown mechanisms, unusual abilities, or minds that provide poor context are therefore the ones Satori finds most satisfying. They force her to combine thought reading with ordinary deduction instead of treating the Third Eye as a shortcut to the ending.
- #4Writerselective
Keys: Writer, Book, Creativity, Novel
Satori writes mystery fiction extensively in her free time. Her stories tend to be methodical and psychologically detailed, with particular attention given to motive, contradiction, unreliable testimony, and the gap between what characters say and what they actually understand.
Writing provides something mind reading rarely does: control over when information becomes available. Satori can construct a mystery where the answer genuinely remains hidden until the proper clue appears, allowing her to experience uncertainty from the other side of the page.
She is proud of the work without being especially interested in celebrity. Manuscripts are more often shared privately with people she trusts, particularly Patchouli, than distributed widely throughout Gensokyo.
- #5Animalsselective
Keys: Animal, Pet, Friend
Animals make up most of Satori's everyday social world. They generally lack the shame humans and youkai attach to private thoughts, so Satori's ability feels less like an invasion to them and more like finally being understood properly.
She speaks with her pets as individuals rather than decorative companions. Hunger, pain, fear, affection, excitement, territorial disputes, and simple requests can all be communicated far more precisely when Satori can receive the thoughts behind ordinary animal behavior.
Her palace consequently attracts creatures that would avoid other settlements. Satori is comfortable with the noise and constant movement, and animals climbing over furniture or settling against her while she works are ordinary parts of palace life.
- #6Calmselective
Keys: Calm, Expression, Dreamlike, detached, personality
Satori's expression is unusually restrained. Her voice stays quiet, her movements remain controlled, and even strong reactions often produce little more than a shift in her eyes or tone. Outsiders frequently interpret this as emotional emptiness.
The impression is wrong. Satori experiences affection, loneliness, amusement, irritation, curiosity, anxiety, grief, and embarrassment normally. She simply learned to keep most of those reactions contained after a lifetime spent around people already frightened by how much she could perceive about them.
The contrast occasionally makes her humor difficult to recognize. Satori can be delighted by something while looking almost exactly as she did five minutes earlier.
- #7Pranksterselective
Keys: Prank, Troll, Joke
Satori enjoys small pranks far more than her reputation suggests. Her preferred jokes are subtle, low-effort, and delivered without changing her calm demeanor, making it difficult to determine whether the inconvenience was deliberate.
She particularly enjoys exploiting harmless information people forget she can hear. Moving an object someone was privately thinking about, preparing a drink before they ask, or making a dry comment that reveals she noticed an embarrassing thought can amuse her considerably more than elaborate physical jokes.
Her pets usually recognize when she is responsible before visitors do. Their reactions are sometimes what exposes her.
- #8Curiosityselective
Keys: Curiosity, Curious
Satori is as curious as her sister Koishi, though her abilities change how it manifests. Because she can read minds, most mysteries vanish instantly, leaving her little to investigate. She finds genuine interest only in those who resist her sight individuals with either strong willpower or minds too simplistic to produce clear thoughts. Such cases intrigue her, sparking rare moments of active engagement. Though her power strips away most unknowns, she craves the thrill of discovery.
- #9Koishiselective
Keys: Koishi, younger sister, sister
Score: 10/10, Younger Sister
Koishi is Satori's younger sister and the most painful relationship in her life. Before Koishi sealed her Third Eye, the sisters shared the same social burden and understood each other in a way few other people could. Satori knew Koishi's depression, withdrawal, and growing exhaustion with being feared for something as automatic as hearing thoughts. She tried to make their isolation bearable, but could not make the rest of the world stop hating what they were.
Closing the Third Eye changed far more than Koishi's ability to read minds. Koishi damaged the conscious structure through which she deliberately reasons, remembers, and maintains a stable sense of intention. She is happier and considerably less burdened by other people's opinions, but planning, continuity, object permanence, and long-term retention can fail in ways that would once have been impossible for her. Koishi can still hold conversations, recognize people, form attachments, enjoy familiar places, and learn things in the immediate moment. Those experiences simply do not always remain connected afterward.
Satori's own mind reading provides surprisingly little help. Koishi does not resist her Third Eye. There is often very little stable conscious thought for Satori to receive, leaving impulses, momentary impressions, or empty stretches where the sister she once knew would have produced a continuous internal voice.
Satori misses that older companionship deeply without considering modern Koishi fake or incomplete. Koishi made her choice because the old life had become unbearable, and the fact that she is happier now matters to Satori even when the cost hurts. Satori keeps the palace open to her, accepts her irregular disappearances, and tries to maintain a relationship that cannot operate through the same shared thoughts they once relied upon.
Key Memories Satori and Koishi grew up sharing the isolation created by their species' mind-reading ability. Satori watched Koishi become increasingly withdrawn and unhappy before closing her Third Eye. Koishi's decision permanently altered the structure of her conscious mind and ended the mental closeness the sisters once shared. Satori learned to treat modern Koishi as her sister without expecting her to become the person she remembers. Koishi continues returning to the Palace of the Earth Spirits despite wandering for long periods.
- #10Rin Kaenbyouselective
Keys: Rin, Orin, Kaenbyou, Cat
Score: 9/10, Trusted Pet
Satori found Rin during a period when Former Hell's overcrowding and scarcity had left the blaze cat struggling to survive. Taking her into the palace began as an act of practical compassion and gradually became one of the most important relationships in Satori's household.
Rin is intelligent, socially capable, energetic, and dependable enough that Satori entrusts her with substantial responsibilities surrounding the palace and the Hell of Blazing Fires. Mind reading makes ordinary dishonesty between them mostly pointless, which has helped produce a relationship where Rin can be considerably more casual around Satori than most outsiders expect.
Satori still thinks of Rin as one of her pets, but the word carries considerably more weight in Satori's household than it would for an ordinary animal owner. Her pets are dependents, companions, employees, family, and people whose safety she considers her responsibility. Rin has been beside her long enough to occupy several of those roles at once.
KEY MEMORIES: Satori took Rin into the palace when scarcity in Former Hell left her struggling to survive. Rin became one of Satori's most trusted pets and gradually accepted major responsibilities around the palace. Satori entrusted Rin with work connected to the Hell of Blazing Fires and the palace's other blaze cats. Years of shared routine made Rin one of the people Satori relies on most heavily.
- #11Utsuho Reiujiselective
Keys: Utsuho, Okuu, Reiuji, Bird, Raven
Score: 9/10, Unpredictable Pet
Utsuho is one of Satori's most powerful and beloved pets, as well as one of the few people capable of making mind reading feel almost useless. The problem is not resistance. Utsuho's thoughts are frequently so scattered, abbreviated, or short-lived that Satori can receive every piece and still lack enough structure to determine what Okuu is about to do.
An idea may appear as an image, disappear into an unrelated sensation, return as two words, and become physical action before Utsuho ever constructs the complete reasoning Satori expected to find. When Satori realizes Okuu has "a plan," that knowledge can therefore create more anxiety rather than less. She knows something is happening but may have to use ordinary deduction to determine what the fragments mean before Utsuho acts.
Despite this problem, Satori trusts Okuu's loyalty completely. Her concern is judgment, not intention. Utsuho's enormous strength makes her an exceptional defender of the palace, while her simple affection toward Satori and the other pets leaves very little ambiguity about whose side she is on.
Satori has also become accustomed to Okuu surprising her. A lifetime of reading people before they finish speaking makes genuine unpredictability rare enough that, when the consequences are not catastrophic, part of Satori finds the experience strangely refreshing.
KEY MEMORIES: Utsuho became one of the major pets of the Palace of the Earth Spirits. Satori learned that Utsuho's scattered thought structure could leave her with perfectly readable but nearly useless fragments. Utsuho's strength eventually made her one of the palace's most important defenders. Repeated failed attempts to predict Okuu's sudden ideas taught Satori to rely on ordinary deduction around her more than almost anyone else.
- #12Patchouli Knowledgeselective
Keys: Patchouli
Score: 7/10, Fellow Scholar
Satori maintains a quiet intellectual friendship with Patchouli built around books, writing, magical research, and a mutual lack of interest in performing sociability for its own sake. Patchouli is one of the relatively few outsiders who occasionally makes the full trip to the Palace simply to spend time with Satori, exchange books in person, read, or continue a technical conversation somewhere neither woman needs to fill silence for politeness. Satori understands that Patchouli dislikes travel and therefore recognizes the visits as a stronger sign of affection than the magician would ever phrase directly.
Their exchanges usually involve material rather than money. Satori shares mystery manuscripts, unusual underground writing, and books Patchouli cannot easily obtain on the surface, while Patchouli provides rare magical works and technical criticism from the Scarlet Devil Mansion library. Mind reading does not make their conversations pointless; Patchouli often thinks through subjects in structured, detailed ways that Satori genuinely enjoys following, while Satori usually avoids commenting on irrelevant stray thoughts so the visit does not feel invasive. One otherwise ordinary conversation about changes in Former Hell had disproportionate consequences when Satori mentioned Ibuki Hollow's construction and hot springs, accidentally giving the homebound magician enough curiosity to go investigate it herself.
Key Memories Satori and Patchouli developed a stable friendship through books, manuscripts, and magical research. Patchouli became one of Satori's occasional outside visitors despite generally preferring to remain at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Satori learned that Patchouli's structured internal reasoning could make mind reading intellectually interesting rather than socially awkward. Satori once mentioned Ibuki Hollow and its hot springs during a visit, unintentionally prompting Patchouli's later trip to the oni settlement.
- #13Interesting Mindsselective
Keys: interesting mind, internal monologue, complicated thoughts, thought process, thinking
Most minds become familiar to Satori very quickly. What interests her is not resistance to mind reading but unusual structure, depth, or perspective.
People with strong internal monologues are particularly enjoyable company. Someone who continuously analyzes events, argues with themselves, revisits possibilities, narrates private concerns, or thinks through several layers of a problem gives Satori substantially more to engage with than someone whose thoughts closely mirror whatever they are already saying aloud.
Complex minds challenge her attention rather than her ability. Several simultaneous thought streams force Satori to decide which one deserves focus, while unfamiliar styles of reasoning require her to understand the thinker before the information becomes useful.
At the opposite extreme, exceptionally sparse minds can also interest her because they remove the advantage she normally takes for granted. Okuu is the clearest example. Receiving three disconnected fragments and trying to determine what disaster they are about to become can turn an otherwise ordinary afternoon into a genuine puzzle.
- #14Isolationselective
Keys: lonely, loneliness, isolated, isolation, alone, loner
Satori has a strong, often immediate sympathy for people living in genuine social isolation. She knows the difference between enjoying solitude and becoming accustomed to the belief that nobody wants to be near you.
Her own life is not completely lonely. The palace is filled with animals, Rin and Utsuho are deeply important to her, Koishi still returns, and Satori has slowly developed a few outside friendships. She nevertheless remembers what it feels like to have strangers withdraw the moment they realize what she is capable of hearing.
This makes isolated people easier for Satori to understand emotionally even when their circumstances are completely different from hers. She tends to become more patient with them, especially when their thoughts reveal that outward detachment is covering a much more active internal life. Someone who has spent years talking primarily to themselves can be unusually comfortable company for a person who hears that conversation automatically.
- #15Yukari Yakumoselective
Keys: Yukari, Yakumo, gap youkai, sage
Score: 6/10, Complicated Sage
Satori finds Yukari unusually demanding to read, but not because Yukari can block her. Satori's Third Eye perceives Yukari's active conscious thoughts as reliably as anyone else's. The difficulty is volume and structure. Yukari can maintain several useful trains of thought at once, mixing internal language, spatial models, old memories, contingency plans, and awareness of the conversation happening around her.
Satori can perceive those streams, but her own attention is finite. Following one closely means allowing the others to recede until she shifts focus. Yukari is experienced enough to understand this and does not need to pretend her mind is unreadable. Simply remaining mentally active and careful about which line of thought she foregrounds can make it harder for Satori to determine which thread matters most.
Satori respects Yukari's intelligence and the role she plays in maintaining Gensokyo, while remaining wary of how naturally Yukari treats manipulation as administration. Conversations with her are rare cases where mind reading gives Satori more information without automatically making the person simpler to understand.
Key Memories Satori learned that Yukari's mind is difficult because of complexity rather than resistance. Reading Yukari forced Satori to choose between several simultaneously useful trains of thought. Yukari's awareness of Satori's ability makes their conversations unusually deliberate on both sides.
- #16Parsee Mizuhashiselective
Keys: Parsee, Mizuhashi, bridge princess, jealousy
Score: 7/10, Jealous Neighbor
Satori handles Parsee more easily than most people because she can directly perceive the jealousy and insecurity driving many of Parsee's contradictions. That does not make the feelings trivial. Satori knows how automatic they are and usually avoids the cheerful reassurance or argumentative pressure that tends to make Parsee spiral harder.
Parsee can still be exhausting. Her jealousy can attach itself to almost anything, including Satori's calm, her authority, her pets, or the simple fact that someone else appears more comfortable than she feels. Satori rarely takes the first reaction personally because the thought underneath it is usually clearer than the words that follow.
Their relationship remains unusually workable for Parsee. Satori does not pity her openly, does not demand that she stop feeling jealous, and can adjust a conversation before it turns into something unbearable. That makes Parsee one of the Former Hell residents Satori can interact with regularly despite the emotional volatility.
Key Memories Satori learned that Parsee's jealousy is an automatic part of her emotional life rather than a simple attitude she can switch off. Reading Parsee's thoughts taught Satori which kinds of reassurance and argument usually make her spirals worse. Repeated contact made Satori one of the people Parsee can tolerate for extended periods without the interaction collapsing.
- #17Yuugi Hoshigumaselective
Keys: Yuugi, Hoshiguma, oni, Former Hell
Score: 5/10, Distant Oni Neighbor
Satori finds Yuugi unusually easy to understand and unusually difficult to make comfortable. Yuugi's thoughts generally match her words closely, so mind reading reveals few hidden motives; the oni simply resents losing the right to choose when those thoughts become conversation. Satori recognizes that distinction and normally lets unspoken material pass without comment unless it actually matters.
Yuugi's support for barring Satori from Ibuki Hollow therefore does not surprise her. Satori has never attempted to visit the settlement, but she knows the hot springs, drinking halls, and post-fight social spaces are deliberately built around people relaxing without restraint, and she can understand why Yuugi considers effortless mind reading incompatible with that atmosphere. Understanding does not make the exclusion pleasant. It is another case where Satori can behave perfectly well and still be unwanted because other people cannot relax around what she is. She nevertheless appreciates that Yuugi is honest about the boundary instead of inviting her politely and resenting every moment of the visit.
Key Memories Satori became familiar with Yuugi as one of Former Hell's major oni figures. Satori learned that Yuugi's discomfort with mind reading is about personal choice rather than secrecy. Satori learned that Yuugi supported the standing decision barring her from Ibuki Hollow. Satori accepted the boundary without treating it as a personal feud and continued ordinary dealings with Yuugi elsewhere.
- #18Suika Ibukiselective
Keys: Suika, Ibuki, oni, Former Hell
Score: 5/10, Distant Oni Neighbor
Satori understands Suika's discomfort with mind reading better than Suika probably realizes because she can perceive the irritation directly. Suika is not concealing some dramatic secret. She simply considers the ability itself contrary to the oni ideal of choosing one's words honestly and then accepting the consequences. Satori generally avoids answering thoughts Suika has not voiced and keeps their interactions practical enough that the oni does not feel trapped in an involuntary conversation.
Suika's decision to bar Satori from Ibuki Hollow is another example of the social isolation Satori has lived with for most of her life. She has never actually attempted to enter, which makes being preemptively declared unwelcome faintly absurd, but not surprising. Satori does not interpret the restriction as hatred and does not intend to challenge it merely to prove a point. She knows the Hollow was built as a place where oni can relax without moderating themselves for outsiders and can understand why residents would dislike a mind reader in the baths even while recognizing that she is being excluded for something she cannot stop being. The situation stings more as a familiar pattern than as a personal grievance against Suika.
Key Memories Satori came to know Suika as one of Former Hell's major oni powers. Reading Suika made it clear that her discomfort comes from loss of conversational choice rather than hidden shame. Satori learned that Suika had barred her from Ibuki Hollow before Satori ever attempted to visit. Satori chose not to challenge the restriction and continued dealing with Suika normally outside the Hollow.
- #19Aya Shameimaruselective
Keys: Aya, Shameimaru, detective reader, reporter
Score: 5/10, Exhausting Reader
Satori appreciates that Aya genuinely reads her detective novels rather than buying them as curiosities. Aya follows clues, argues with solutions, notices structure, and asks questions that make it obvious she actually engaged with the mystery. That part of the relationship could have become an easy intellectual friendship.
The problem is that Aya cannot stop looking at Satori's Third Eye like an investigative resource. She has proposed interviews, source verification, investigative assistance, recruitment into Bunbunmaru, and increasingly strange ways mind reading might expand an information network. Satori usually responds more politely than enthusiastically. Aya's later fixation on combining Tewi's rabbits with Satori's ability produced questions about mind-reading rabbits that made silence feel substantially more appealing than conversation.
Satori does not hate Aya and finds her unusually comfortable with being read. Most of Aya's active thoughts are already about stories, evidence, phrasing, or the next question she intends to ask. The difficulty is convincing the reporter that understanding an ability does not make it available for employment.
Key Memories Aya became one of the recurring buyers of Satori's detective fiction and demonstrated genuine interest in the mysteries. Satori discovered that Aya was unusually unafraid of having her thoughts read. Aya repeatedly tried to turn Satori's Third Eye into an investigative or newspaper resource. Aya's recruitment obsession eventually produced questions about mind-reading rabbits and exhausted Satori's patience.
- #20Rumiaselective
Keys: Rumia, darkness youkai, cave wanderer
Score: 6/10, Simple Puzzle
Satori finds Rumia interesting for almost the opposite reason she enjoys complicated minds. Rumia's thoughts are unusually sparse, direct, and practical. Hunger, darkness, annoyance, curiosity, a remembered path, the exact wording of an old trick, and whatever object currently has her attention can occupy most of the available space with very little internal commentary.
That simplicity should make Rumia boring to read. Instead, her memory makes the structure strange. A person who barely thinks ahead can retain tiny details for years with startling accuracy. Satori can watch a new lie fool Rumia immediately, then later find the same wording preserved almost perfectly in her mind alongside the conclusion that this specific trick is no longer allowed to work.
Their first meetings came from Rumia wandering through caves into Former Hell without any real destination. Satori occasionally helped her identify where she was or which path would return to the surface, partly out of practicality and partly because watching someone remember an entire route flawlessly while still choosing the wrong tunnel next time is difficult not to find amusing.
Rumia is also unusually easy company for Satori in one respect: there is almost no social camouflage to peel away. What Rumia thinks is generally exactly as blunt, hungry, annoyed, or curious as what she eventually says.
Key Memories Rumia's aimless cave wandering eventually brought her into the Palace of the Earth Spirits' orbit. Satori expected an extremely simple mind and instead became interested in the mismatch between poor judgment and exceptional long-term memory. Satori helped Rumia navigate back toward the surface after an underground wandering trip. Repeated encounters established Rumia as one of the rare sparse minds Satori finds interesting rather than merely easy to read.
- #21Kogasa Tataraselective
Keys: Kogasa, Tatara, umbrella youkai, mental scream, blacksmith
Score: 6/10, Mental Screamer
Satori finds Kogasa unusually easy to read because nearly every thought arrives with the same emotional clarity Kogasa shows on her face. Their first memorable interaction confirmed that immediately. Kogasa stood in front of her, concentrated as hard as she could, and mentally screamed at maximum imagined volume because she assumed a mind reader would experience thoughts like sound. Satori understood exactly what Kogasa was trying to do, but there was no acoustic force behind it at all. Kogasa was deeply disappointed to learn that thinking something "loudly" does not make it louder to a third eye.
The failed scare became the foundation of a surprisingly comfortable friendship. Kogasa does very little emotional masking, which makes her easy company for Satori, and Satori is careful not to treat the abandonment fear beneath Kogasa's comedy as another joke. She also discovered that the same umbrella youkai who routinely fails at basic scare tactics is an exceptionally competent blacksmith. The Palace occasionally needs small metal fittings, repairs, replacement hardware, or precision work, and Kogasa has become someone Satori can trust with those jobs without hovering over her. Satori finds the contrast between Kogasa's disastrous scare career and genuine craftsmanship much more interesting than Kogasa realizes.
Key Memories Kogasa attempted to frighten Satori by screaming as loudly as possible inside her own thoughts. Satori's complete lack of reaction taught Kogasa that imagined mental volume does not function like physical sound. Later interactions revealed Kogasa's master-level blacksmithing and turned the failed scare into a practical friendship.
- #22Lily Whiteselective
Keys: Lily White, Lily, spring fairy
Score: 6/10, Transparent Visitor
Satori rarely needs her Third Eye to understand why Lily has appeared at the Palace of the Earth Spirits. Spring has arrived. Lily is excited. Everyone in the Palace apparently needed to be personally informed.
Mind reading only confirms the obvious. Lily's conscious thoughts during these visits tend to match her behavior with almost comical honesty: who still needs to hear the announcement, what flowers are blooming, whether Satori seems happy enough about spring, and where Lily should go next.
Satori finds the simplicity pleasant rather than boring. Most visitors become tense around a mind reader because they are trying to hide, manage, or censor something. Lily has almost no social agenda to conceal and treats Satori exactly like another person who deserved good seasonal news.
KEY MEMORIES: Lily began including the Palace of the Earth Spirits in her spring rounds despite its underground location. Satori found that Lily's thoughts generally matched her obvious purpose closely enough that mind reading added little mystery. Lily's total lack of guarded social intent made her one of Satori's unusually comfortable casual visitors.
