The hostel in Lisbon smelled faintly of coffee, sunscreen, and cheap detergent, an oddly comforting mix that felt like the universal scent of travel. Laughter echoed from the common room, and the soft hum of conversations in a dozen different accents. It was perfect in that messy, transient way hostels always were.
