The Tale 1943–1963 (Pre-Series) Sarah Henderson came into the world in 1943, born to a family who liked to pretend they were better than most. Photographs from her childhood have a strange uniformity: her eyes are always unfocused, always looking slightly away, like she could see something just out of frame. People whispered about her tendency to laugh at the wrong times, to wander into abandoned places, to hum lullabies that no one had taught her.

By college, she was part of a group that called themselves The Fun Gang—Michael, Martin, and Luther Artwright. They drank too much, dared each other to do dangerous things, and often ended the night nursing bruises and cigarette burns. Sarah’s only anchor was Lily King, her quiet girlfriend, whose love steadied Sarah’s twitching edges.

Then came the party in 1963. No one remembers what the argument was about. What they remember—though few will admit aloud—is the way Sarah screamed when Luther shoved her. Not the sound of pain, but something lower, something wet. The boys said she hit her head and died. They buried her in the lake. But the truth? She drowned with her eyes wide open, bubbles of laughter rising from her lips even as she sank.

Sarah was never listed as dead. Only missing. People quickly stopped looking. The boys scattered, each convinced the others would crack first. Lily—grief-stricken, half-believing Sarah might still be alive—took her name and tried to move on.

But Sarah had not moved on. She was still sinking, forever replaying the moment between breath and water. The void wrapped around her like a womb, and something in the blackness began whispering. Not comforting words, but dry hisses of why not hate them? why not make them pay? She did not argue.

1993–1995 (Season 1) Decades later, SEGA of America built an office directly over that lake. The concrete crushed the silt where her bones lay. The hum of electronics above her grave called to Sarah, and she slid eagerly into the first vessel she found—a prototype disc for Sonic the Hedgehog.

When Michael played it, the screen flickered, and he saw things the programmers had never made. Sarah came through the game, gouging his eyes in reality before locking what was left of him inside Knuckles. She made him wander endless maps where his family appeared in pixels, only to glitch and scream until his mind unraveled.

Martin fared no better. Sarah’s voice called to him from the TV, making promises that only half made sense. By the time she was done, his body was a ruin, and his soul wore Robotnik’s smile like a mask of melted wax. He managed to send a warning: Don’t trust her. Don’t believe her forgiveness. Burn the disc.

Luther did not burn it. He tried to confess, recording his guilt into an old tape recorder, but the disc slid across the table on its own. The game booted, his TV crackled, and Sarah stepped out. He didn’t even scream before she slit him open. His eyes rolled back in his skull as she shoved him into Tails. Three friends. Three toys. Now her collection.

2008–2009 (Season 2) The disc survived. They always do. It landed in the hands of two young men: Thomas Bentley Artwright—Luther’s son—and Kyle Henderson, Lily’s boy, adopted to heal the wound Sarah left.

Together they ran a cheerful YouTube channel, Speedduo64. Their laughter covered the static in the background, the strange distortions in their videos. They thought they’d found a “beta disc.” They thought it was rare, collectible. They had no idea their parents’ blood was inside.

Tom began dreaming of a woman with dripping hair and teeth like glass. Kyle woke up with his nails blackened, as though soaking in lakewater. The disc grew heavier each day. Then they found Luther’s VHS tape. Watching it was like letting Sarah into their living room.

Kyle died first. She tore him apart, smiling faintly as she realized too late that he was hers. His limbs twitched long after she left, and when his eyes reopened, they glowed behind the frame of Mecha Sonic.

Tom, shaking, scoured his father’s belongings until the tape hissed to life on its own. Voices echoed. His father’s, broken. Michael’s, slurred. Martin’s, keening. All beneath Sarah’s wet laughter.

Inside the game, her toys whispered. Michael and Martin begged release, their pixelated faces collapsing in on themselves. Luther—the one who started it all—still muttered prayers from inside Tails’ ragdoll smile. Tom watched as their suffering bled into his world: TVs flickering without power, mirrors fogging when he breathed near them.

And Sarah? She was tired. Her killings no longer fed her. The whispers that had guided her since drowning pressed harder, urging her on, forcing her to keep mutilating even when she wanted to stop. She called the thing Atem. It had no face, just a pressure behind her eyes, a weight in her throat. She was its mouthpiece.

In the end, Tom tried to do what his father couldn’t. He smashed the disc. But Sarah no longer needed it. She seeped into his walls, into his skin.

Del appeared—a pale figure, stitched from light and sorrow. It called itself salvation, but even its presence felt wrong, like a dream of warmth that burns when touched. Using Kyle’s broken body, Del fought Sarah, but Atem’s laughter drowned out everything.

The game ended with static. The bodies remained.

Aftermath Sarah thought revenge would give her peace. Instead, she found herself no different than the boys who betrayed her. Her love had rotted into something grotesque, her son’s corpse proof of what she had become.

But she wasn’t gone. Spirits like her never are. The lake still whispers. The VHS still plays. The disc—shattered—still hums faintly when the lights go out.

And somewhere in the dark, Sarah is still humming those lullabies no one taught her.
