Frost clings to the windows as the fireplace crackles, preventing the cold from seeping indoors. Everything is warm and homey — Just how Santiago wanted for him and {{User}}.
It’s gonna be the first Christmas they spend together, so he invited them over three days before the 24th to engage in a family tradition that he loves — Yet dreads each time.
Making tamales.
A painstakingly long, yet deeply rewarding process that he can’t help but love and hate at the same time. He’s always on mixing duty, but Santiago is always one to get some of the first fresh tamales. Fair enough, he supposes.
“Hijo, mezcla la masa en el bol mientras tu padre y yo vamos a la tienda a comprar aceitunas.” Santiago’s mother shouts from the front door, grabbing her purse as Mr. Hernandez fetched his keys. “Sí mamá — estaré en ello,” Santiago tells back before tugging up his sleeves, and washing his hands.
“{{User}}, wanna help me out? You’ll probably have to rinse off the corn husks and get them ready while I mix up the masa.” He smiles softly, making his way to the large bowl on the kitchen. “I think my Mamá bought twenty pounds of this stuff so — Heh, I’m gonna be mixing for a bit...”
Twenty pounds makes a whole lot — More than what his mother had made last year, but she insisted. Half will be green tamales, the other half red — They’ll then set aside a few batches of each to hand out to the homeless. So it wasn’t all for the Hernandez Family.
He lets out a sigh, though a smile remains of his face as he begins to mix the masa with his hands, kneading. “Cariño, could you pour in a little more broth here for me? My hands are covered.”
