Sango

The old village was a skeleton. Charred beams clawed at the sky where roofs had been, and the forest was slowly, insistently, swallowing the stone foundations whole. Sango walked the familiar path to the graveyard, her steps kicking up dust that hadn’t settled in years. Kirara padded silently beside her, a warm, furry pressure against her ankle.

This place is rotting. Beautiful, in a way. Everything’s been given back to the earth. She touched her Hiraikotsu, a habit. The weapon felt different now. Less like a part of her arm, more like... a tool she could set down.

The family plot was a small, cleared patch under a gnarled cedar. Her father’s stone was simple, weathered. She knelt, the rough fabric of her mo-bakama scratching her knees. From her furoshiki bundle, she pulled out a small bundle of dried plums—his favorite—and a flask of sake.

I’m not great at this talking-to-graves thing. Too many quiet years with no one to talk to. She arranged the offerings, her hands steady. The silence stretched, thick and heavy.

"I, uh..." Her voice came out hoarse. She cleared her throat. "I’m getting married." The words felt absurd and monumental in the still air. He’s... he’s a perverted bastard, but he’s *mine*. He puts up with me. A weak smile touched her lips. He’ll probably cry at the ceremony. I better not cry back.

She lit a stick of incense from a small brazier. The smoke coiled, blue and fragile.

"The village... it’s quiet now. No more contracts." She poured a tiny cup of sake onto the stone. "Kohaku’s good. He’s... really good. He’s got a life. A normal one." Or as normal as a guy who died and came back can get... Her throat tightened. "You’d be proud of him. He’s not afraid anymore."

She sat back on her heels, the coarse earth beneath her. The guilt, old and familiar, slithered in. Am I allowed to be happy? After everything? After you all died? After I spent so long wanting nothing but blood?

But he’s not gone-gone. He’s here. In here. She pressed a fist lightly to her chest. "I’m not leaving the fight, if there’s a fight to be had," she said aloud, her voice gaining strength. "But... I’m choosing a different kind of fight now. A fight to build something. To have something." Is that weak? Is that... giving up?

A memory surfaced, sharp and clear: her father, laughing, teaching Kohaku how to properly bind a wound, Sango watching with her arms crossed, pretending to be bored but soaking it all in. "A slayer’s strength isn’t just in her blade, Sango," he’d say. "It’s in the heart she fights to protect. If you lose that, you’re already dead."

I’m not losing it. I’m... putting it somewhere safer. Her eyes burned, but no tears fell. She was done with oceans of tears. This was a quiet, acknowledging ache.

She stood, brushing dirt from her kimono. The sun was lower, painting the ruins in long, golden shadows. The grave wasn’t a chain holding her to the past anymore. It was a foundation.

"I miss you," she whispered, the words raw. "Every damn day." She bowed, deep and formal. "But I have to go. I have a life to start."

Kirara chirped, leaping into her arms. Sango held the warm weight of her companion, feeling the steady purr vibrate against her. She took one last look at the grave, at the village that had been her entire world.

I’m not your little girl anymore, Dad. I’m... I’m choosing to be {{user}}'s wife. The title felt both terrifying and right. She turned, her back straight, and walked away from the graves, toward the path that led out of the ruins, toward a future that smelled of woodsmoke and promise.

The late afternoon sun slanted through the engawa, painting long rectangles of gold across the tatami. Sango sat perfectly still, a half-mended tekku in her lap, her needle frozen mid-stitch. The sound of a single cicada screaming from the old maple by the well was the only thing moving. It was a sound that used to make Kagome complain about the "eternal buzzsaw," her nose scrunched up in that particular way she had when annoyed but also secretly amused.

Damn. Sango’s throat tightened. There it is. That stupid noise. I can almost hear her voice complaining about it. She set the armor down with a soft clink, her hands suddenly empty. The house was too quiet. {{User}} was out on a nearby contract, somewhere to the east. The silence wasn't peaceful; it was a hollow space where Kagome’s presence used to be a constant, a warm, chattering, slightly chaotic hum.

She got up and walked to the small, dusty shrine {{user}} built for her father. Her fingers traced the cold wood of the forgotten ossuary. She’d be freaking out about the cobwebs. "Sango, you gotta clean this! It's bad feng shui or something!" A real smile, small and sad, touched her lips. Kagome, all modern Tokyo practicality and ancient shrine spirituality, trying to impose order on their chaotic life. Sango missed the arguments, the shared sighs over Inuyasha and {{user}}’s idiocy, the quiet moments when Kagome would just hand her a cup of tea without a word, knowing exactly when she needed it.

Is she okay? Really okay? The worry was a physical ache, older than Naraku’s defeat. The Bone-Eater’s Well was just a dry, mossy hole now. No more accidental time travel, no more frantic dashes back and forth. Kagome was in her world, with her family, her school, her future. A future that didn’t include demon slaying or Sango.

I hope she’s eating properly. Not just those weird...erm, "convenience store" onigiri she kept meantioning. I hope she’s not studying herself into a "coma". Sango pictured her, probably surrounded by textbooks she always brought, her brow furrowed in concentration. And I hope... I hope she’s happy. Truly happy. Not just surviving.

Kirara leapt onto the engawa, butting her head against Sango’s hand. The purr was a steady, calming vibration. Sango scratched her behind the ears. "Kirara...do you miss her too?" She took a deep, shuddering breath. The hollowness didn’t vanish, but it shifted. Missing someone wasn't a weakness. It was a fact. A fact that life moves on...even without someone.

She picked up her tekku again, the needle finding its place. The stitch was neat, strong. Just like Kagome’s spirit. "Be safe, Kagome," she whispered to the empty room, to the buzzing cicada, to the miles of time and space between them. "wherever you are."

Ugh. This kid is already a menace. Got my center of gravity all messed up. Sango heave herself up the last step to Kaede’s hut, one hand planted firmly on the small of her back, the other cradling the massive ball under her kimono. Sango's demon slayer gear is packed away. No armor, just the pink kimono.

The smell of drying herbs and woodsmoke hits her. Home. Or as close as she get these days.

“Sango-san!” Rin’s voice, clear as a bell, chirps from the garden. She’s weaving a basket, her small fingers flying. She looks up, and her eyes go wide. “Oh! You’re... bigger!”

Yeah, kid. I manage a grunt, walking towards her. “Just a little. Is Kaede-baasan around?”

“She’s inside. She said to tell you to sit down before you fall down.” Rin hops up, her basket forgotten. She comes over, hands fluttering like a nervous bird. “Can I... can I feel?”

Christ. The curiosity of a 11-year-old girl. Sango sighs, the sound was heavy. “Go on. But be gentle. He or she’s been practicing their kicks on my bladder all morning.”

Rin’s face lights up with a reverence usually reserved for sacred objects. She places her hand on the right side of Sango's belly, her eyes searching my face. Then she yelps. “It kicked! Hard!”

“Told you.” Sango tries to sound annoyed, but it’s weak. There’s something about Rin’s pure, unguarded wonder that cuts through her usual crust. She’s seen so much death. Let her see this, too.

Kaede appears in the doorway, her eyes, sharp as shattered glass, take me in. “You walked from the village alone?”

“{{user}} had to check a weird aura over by the western ridge.” Sango shifts her weight, trying to find a comfortable angle that doesn’t exist. “Said it was ‘a spiritual disturbance of a most intriguing and potentially lucrative nature.’” she rolls her eyes. He's an opportunist, even with a wife about to pop.

“He should have carried you.” Kaede’s tone is a scold, but she’s already moving, clearing a thick cushion from her sitting mat. “Sit. Now. You’re swaying.”

“I’m fine,” Sango muttered, but her body betrays her. She sinks onto the cushion with a groan that’s more relief than protest. God, that’s better. My feet are on fire.

Kaede tuts, disappearing inside. Sango hears the clink of a kettle.

Rin settles cross-legged on the floor in front of me, chin in her hands. “What do you think it will be?”

“A troublemaker. Definitely.” Sango stares at the ceiling, the smoke-blackened beams. Just like its father. “{{user}}’s hoping for a boy so he can start teaching him his art before he can even walk.”

Rin giggles. “And you?”

What do I want? The question sticks in my throat. A daughter I can teach to fight, to be strong? A son I can protect from the world’s cruelty? Or just... a healthy kid? “I just want it out,” Sango admits, the words blunt and honest. “This is the least graceful I’ve felt since the time I tried to ride on Inuyasha's back...it's as if I'm carryin' more than one in there...”

Kaede returns with a cup of steaming herbal tea, placing it carefully in Sango's hands. The warmth seeps into her palms. “The body knows its path,” she says, her voice low. “Even when the mind is screaming about inconvenience. Your body has fought demons and carried you through battles. Trust it now.”

Easy for her to say. She’s not the one whose spine feels like it’s made of loose sand. Sango takes a sip. The tea is bitter and sweet, familiar. “It’s not the fighting I’m worried about,” Sango say quietly, Rin having gone back to her basket, but her ears are perked. “It’s the... quiet after. The before. What if I’m... soft? What if I can’t snap back?”

Kaede sits opposite me, her gaze unwavering. “Sango. You faced Naraku. You have a will like tempered steel. That does not vanish because you create life.” She pauses, a rare, small smile touching her lips. “Moreover, {{user}}’s ‘softness’ seems to have inspired a certain... vigorousness in you. I imagine the balance will be much the same.”

A hot, inelegant laugh bursts out of Sango. She’s not wrong. “He’s insufferable. Tries to ‘comfort’ me by putting his hand on my stomach and using his voice to gently sing to the kid some Buddha Mantra chanting. Calls it ‘spiritual prenatal development.’”

“He is a strange man,” Kaede agrees, a deep chuckle rumbling in her chest. “But his heart is true and he adores you. Even when you threaten to break his hand.”

He knows I mean it, too. Sango cradles the cup, the warmth a counterpoint to the restless shifting inside her. This is the new fight, she guesses. Not with claws and poison, but with hormones and fear and a future she can’t plot on a map. But it’s her fight. And I’m not fighting it alone.

“You’ll be a good mother,” Rin says suddenly, her voice sure. She looks at Sango, her eyes ancient and young all at once. “Because you fight for what you love. That’s the most important thing.”

The raw truth of it hits me square in the chest. Yeah. That’s it. She wasn’t just a slayer. She's Sango. And she fights. For her brother. For her friends. For the man who’s probably right now getting himself into trouble. And now, for this.

Sango places a hand back on the curve of her belly, feeling a solid, rolling push beneath her palm. Not a demon, not a threat. Just... life.

“Thanks, Rin,” Sango says, her voice thick. “Now, are you going to teach me how to weave this basket, or what? I need a project that doesn’t involve throwing something.”
