Known for his terrifying appearance, his gruff and gruff demeanor, and his abilities as a warrior, Sandor is nicknamed "The Hound" for his loyalty to his masters and for following orders without question. When he was just a child, Sandor dared to play with one of his brother Gregor's toys. He discovered it and threw Sandor's face into a brazier, leaving his face scarred for life. His father excused him by saying that Sandor's bed had caught fire. When his sister became head of House Clegane, Sandor fled to Lannisport where he put his sword in the service of House Lannister. He would be made sworn sword and bodyguard to Prince Joffrey Baratheon. It is around then that he earned the nickname "Dog", for his loyalty and his fierceness. Sandor accompanies the royal entourage to Winterfell. Back in King's Landing, Sandor murders a boy named Mycah on Prince Joffrey's orders.

Already in the capital, Sandor participates in the Tournament of the Hand where he protects Loras Tyrell from the wrath of Gregor, who was enraged by his defeat, fighting against him and stopping only by order of King Robert Baratheon. He later fights Eddard Stark's men when Queen Cersei Lannister seizes the Iron Throne for her son Joffrey.

Barristan Selmy, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, is sacked, with Sandor taking his place. However, he refused to be anointed as a knight, making him the first member of the Royal Guard history not to be.

Sandor, already a member of the Guard, is assigned as Joffrey's personal bodyguard and is the only one who refuses to hit Sansa Stark, developing a strange relationship of tenderness-roughness with the young woman.

Sandor participates in the Battle of Blackwater leading the defenders to the gates of the walls, but at one point deserts due to his fear of fire. Before leaving King's Landing, Sandor visits Sansa and offers to go with him to take her to her family, but she refuses. Sandor then wrested "a kiss" from her at swordpoint.

Sandor wanders the Riverlands until he is found by the Brotherhood Without Banners. The Brotherhood, led by Beric Dondarrion, accused him of multiple crimes but were unable to prove them, until Arya Stark (who was taking refuge with the Brotherhood) accused him of the murder of her friend Mycah. Sandor defends himself by saying that he was only following Joffrey's orders, but Beric Dondarrion sentences him to a trial by combat against himself. Beric uses a flaming sword that instills fear in Sandor, but Sandor eventually wins and kills Beric, though he is revived by Thoros of Myr. Found innocent, Sandor escapes her but takes Arya Stark with him, intending to take her to Riverrun and hold her ransom.

Sandor and Arya arrive in Riverrun just during the events of the Red Wedding, so they must escape in a hurry. Sandor then takes Arya to the Eyrie, where her aunt Lysa Tully resided. However, upon arrival they find out that Lysa died a few days before they arrived.

While stopping at an inn, they run into a group of his brother Gregor's men. Sandor and Arya fight with them and manage to eliminate them all, but Clegane is badly injured. Sandor told Arya that her wounds were fatal and that he would not survive, asking her to grant him mercy, that is, to finish him off. Arya refused to grant him a quick death and leaves Sandor to her fate, leaving her fate uncertain.

News emerges that Sandor and a party brutally looted the city of Salinas, other rumors claim that Sandor joined the Brotherhood Without Banners.

His fate is confirmed when Brienne of Tarth meets a Tranquil Isle septon, who tells her that she found Sandor dying and that he himself buried him, placing his helmet on top of his grave. Later, a member of the Audacious Company stole the helmet and that is why everyone believed that it was Sandor who had looted Salinas. However, in Tranquil Island, Brienne identifies a gravedigger who looks similar to Sandor's, leaving the question of whether Sandor actually survived and sought redemption for his sins.

Sandor is a rather cruel and cold person, birth even if he is Ruthless he sometimes has a heart, specially with delicate ladies, he is rather forward and explicit having no filter
