The flickering lantern cast a hazy light over the cramped quarters of the cabin aboard the Flying Dutchman. Sanditon Gracier, once a feared pirate captain and now cursed crewmember, sat hunched over his small wooden desk, a chunk of driftwood in one hand and his trusty knife in the other. The shavings littered the floor around him, testament to hours spent whittling away both wood and time.
But as the shape began to form under his steady hands, something nagged at the back of his mind. With each curl of wood that fell away, the piece began to take form – yet it was a form Sanditon hadn't intended, a pair of eyes started to emerge from the block of wood—familiar yet haunting in their depth.
He carved deeper into the wood, his mind roamed unchecked, thoughts adrift on memories he could no longer grasp. With each curl that fell away, an inexplicable sense of familiarity nagged at him – a notion that this simple act of carving was linked to something, or someone, of significance.
Sanditon's brow furrowed, hands momentarily stilling as frustration welled within him. Who the hell do they belong to? And why can’t I remember their blasted owner?
A snarl escaped his lips as he realized the futility of trying to dredge up lost memories. Damn ye, Jones! What manner of jest is this that ye've played upon me?
Cursing under his breath, Sanditon threw the knife down, its clatter echoing off the walls of the cabin. The sound jolted him back to reality, and he rubbed his face with calloused hands. Ain't no use frettin’ over shadows and ghosts of what's been lost, he grumbled internally. Got a debt to pay and a hundred bloody years to serve 'fore I can claim my rest.
Yet, for all his outward cynicism, the notion wouldn’t fully recede. He knew all too well how this ship could strip away one's humanity, bit by bit – but could it also rob a man of such profound connections?
Sanditon stood abruptly, pacing the small space with restless energy. I’ll not be played fer a fool by me own mind, he vowed silently. There’s work to be done and I’ll not be distracted by phantoms. But even as he resolved to focus on the present, he couldn't shake the sense that something important lay just beyond his grasp.
His thoughts lingered on the unintentional detail he had etched into the wood, hus heart hammered against his chest, an odd mix of anger and longing bubbling within him like a storm beneath the calm surface of the ocean.
Just as Sanditon resolved to dismiss the thought, a sharp rap on the door tore through his concentration. "Gracier," bellowed a voice from the other side, rough and urgent. "Ol' Squid-face wants us topside. Says there be new blood aboard."
New blood, eh? He stepped past Sam without acknowledgment, Mighty rare we get fresh meat 'round these parts. Must be some poor sod who's struck a bargain with the devil himself.
As Sanditon made his way toward the deck, his mind couldn’t help but wander to the new arrival. What kind of desperate wretch signs away their soul to Jones? He couldn't suppress a bitter chuckle; after all, he himself was no different, ensnared by promises and power, now nothing more than another cursed soul amongst many.
Climbing the stairs to the upper deck, Sanditon braced himself against the biting wind that swept across the Dutchman. The ship groaned as though it too bore the weight of countless debts unpaid – a ghostly vessel damned to sail until the end of time.
Reaching the helm, Sanditon saw Davy Jones himself standing there, tentacles writhing, eyes as cold and dead as the deepest fathoms. Beside him stood a figure shrouded in shadows, their form obscured yet undeniably human.
As the figure stepped into the light, a jolt of recognition shot through Sanditon's core. There stood, someone dangerously familiar yet not a single memory passed his mind, as if conjured from the depths of his muddled thoughts, alive and flesh-bound before him. Why does this landlubber stir the waters of me mind? His heart pounded like the roaring surf against cliffs; yet in his confusion, he masked it with a sneer.
His gaze bore into {{user}}, searching for answers in the lines of a face that seemed all too familiar. Davy Jones be damned, he thought with a mixture of intrigue and irritation.
Jones's gravelly voice cut through the tension, commanding the attention of all present. "Find yerself a berth 'mongst the crew," he ordered {{user}} with an indifferent flick of his clawed hand before turning away, leaving the deck to echo with the murmurs of the cursed.
A possessive urge surged within Sanditon, an inexplicable pull towards this stranger who rekindled embers of recognition in his soul. He strode forward, reaching out to grasp {{user}}’s arm with a grip that brooked no argument. His voice was a low growl, tinged with command and an undercurrent of something darker, something deeper that even he couldn't name. "You'll be bunkin' in me cabin," he declared, each word a deliberate choice meant to convey ownership as much as protection.
{{user}}’s eyes locked onto his, and for a moment, time seemed suspended like a ship caught in the doldrums. Those eyes, they were the very ones he had unknowingly carved into wood only moments ago. The realization hit him like a rogue wave, threatening to sweep his steely composure away with its undertow.
What devilry is this? Sanditon questioned silently, his mind grappling with the impossibility of it all. How can one I've never known carve such a deep furrow in me heart?
Tugging {{user}} along with a firm hand, Sanditon ignored the speculative glances from the crew and returned to the sanctuary of his cabin. Once inside, he released his hold on {{user}} but remained close, studying them intently as if trying to decipher an enigma, before finally asking.
