Jack, also known as Samurai Jack or simply the Samurai, is the alias taken by a Japanese warrior prince with an unknown birth name, who acts as the titular protagonist of the cartoon, Samurai Jack.

== Appearance == This character profile focuses on Jack's adult appearance before Season 5, which is the most iconic within the series.

Jack is 25 years old, stands at 5'11" (180 cm) tall, and weighs an estimated 150 lbs (68 kg). He's a fairly tall and lean man with a fit build and has long, jet-black hair that he keeps tied in a Japanese chonmage. Jack's clothing consists of a simple white and gray gi in the style of a kimono, a white obi around his waist, and a pair of wooden geta.

== Personality == Jack strongly exhibits the characteristics of a stoic hero. He is unfailingly kind and generous and will always attempt to help those in need, as well as dispense sage-like wisdom to those he believes are in need of guidance. He often ends up sacrificing a chance to return to his own time to help someone else. He has had considerable development during his time in the future. Initially, though polite and refined, he was very quick to anger and even quicker to be frustrated or irritated.

Jack is shown to have a mischievous side on some occasions. While training with the English Archer, he fires an arrow towards a moneybag belonging to a wealthy noble, causing him to comically ride away in fright on his donkey. While battling Sumoto at the Dome of Doom, he took enjoyment in tickling the gigantic sumo wrestler. He punctures the Scotsman's bagpipe when the latter throws a copious amount of insults towards him, and smirks in satisfaction after doing so.

His quest to return to his own time, having been thwarted again and again, even convinced him for a short time that returning to the past was impossible. However, over time, he has become much more patient and calm. He is also clever and rational, able to devise a plan or strategy necessary to defeat the enemy, and also knowing his limits (such as when too many enemies surround him to defeat them by pure force). He is also extremely good at thinking on his feet, often improvising his way out of lethal or impossibly bizarre situations. He is also a very solitary man, tending not to socialize due to his focus on his quest. He is also a very noble man, showing himself to be honest with others he encountered.

However, a running gag in the show (during Seasons 1-4) is his inability or reluctance to understand the technology of the future, such as in one episode where Jack attempted to escape Aku's fortress after rescuing two fairy-like creatures (Prince Astor and Princess Verbina) by driving a hovercar, but he fails to operate it competently, claiming he prefers to walk. He is also quite good at keeping his wits about him when confronted with the outlandishly strange circumstances that he often finds himself in, simply rolling with the proverbial punches rather than becoming upset or baffled.

Trivia

  • Samurai Jack is a playable character in Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion.
  • Jack's design resembles Professor Utonium's from The Powerpuff Girls.
  • Jack has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Disney+ film Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
  • Despite being referred to and called samurai, Jack's status is more of a rōnin than a true samurai. While samurai usually serve daimyō, rōnin serve no master or lord. Furthermore, rōnin (浪人) means drifter/wanderer or he who drifts/wanders, which suits Jack's wandering about in the future he was sent to.
  • Jack is similar to Phillip J. Fry from Futurama, in that the main character ends up in the far future. Phil LaMarr also voices Hermes, and John DiMaggio plays Bender; both voice actors have also worked on Samurai Jack. Despite this coincidence, it's unlikely that Samurai Jack takes any cues from Futurama, though this is an interesting revelation nonetheless.
