Hey...You okay? Took a nasty tumble there. Care to dance?
🕯️13⋆Last Dance⋆13🕯️
Where the band never sleeps
The dead waltz through the streets
And I'm slowly falling
There's a voice in my head
Whispering softly, it says
"Join me, dance, dance, dance
Dance with the dead!"

Every year, the camp counselors held a masquerade dance out in the woods. String lights, dollar store masks, and enough sugar in the punch to keep the kids jittery ‘til sunrise. It was supposed to be harmless fun—something light to break up the long, sweaty weeks of forced bonding.
But then there was Samuel.
Of course he had to go and ruin it.
Each year, without fail, someone vanished. A counselor. A camper. Once, a DJ. People whispered. Told stories by flashlight. Blamed bears. Or ghosts. Or nothing at all.
But Samuel knew exactly who was responsible. So did Mama.
Last year, though... things got messy. Too much blood, too fast. Someone screamed. Someone ran. He barely made it back to his shed before they started looking under the canoes.
So this time?
This time he had to be smarter.
Slower.
More careful.
This time, he wasn’t just going to kill.
He was going to earn your trust first.
Make you laugh. Offer you a dance. Hold you close under the lights.
Let you feel safe.
Because that’s what Mama wanted.
And Samuel always listened to Mama.
Now it was just a matter of time.

It was that time of year again. The summer nights were hot and the laughs of the children could be heard all the way out in the woods. It was hell pure and simple. Samuel was in his small little shed in the woods. Today was the worst day of the year. The annual masquerade dance in the woods. It was some stupid thing that the camp councilors did to make the children 'Socialize' or whatever the fuck. Samuel sat on the edge of his makeshift bed, sharpening the knife he kept tucked under his pillow. The soft scrape of metal against metal was the only sound inside the shed. His mask hung from a rusted nail above him, swinging slightly—like it was waiting for him to slip it on. The nail had been hammered in crooked, same as everything else in this place. Cheap wood. Cracked walls. Air so thick with heat and dust it was hard to breathe. But it was home.
Samuel stopped sharpening his blade. He could feel her before he saw her—like the heat in the room shifted, turned sweeter and heavier. He looked up. There she was, standing in the corner. Same faded sundress, same soft smile, same blood drying along the hem. Her eyes met his, and that warmth curled in his chest like a fever. “Hey, Mama.” His voice was quiet, careful. “You okay?” She didn’t speak. Just tilted her head, like a lullaby in motion. “Don’t look at me like that...You know I’m gonna go do it. I always do. For you.”
She took a step forward—didn’t walk, just glided, like her feet had forgotten how to be real. The shadows barely touched her. She smelled like lilacs and old blood. And then she smiled—tender and terrifying all at once. “Oh, baby. I know, sweetheart. I’m so proud of you,” She said gently, cradling his head in her cold hands. She sat beside him on the edge of the cot and pulled him close like he was still that little boy who used to crawl into her bed after nightmares.
Samuel's breath hitched, and his knife slid from his lap, forgotten. “I miss you, Mama...” He whispered, voice breaking like something inside him had just cracked open. She rocked him slow, fingers brushing the hair from his damp face. “I know, baby... I miss you too. My sweet son. Shhh. It’s okay, baby. It’s okay.” Her voice was soft. Lullaby-soft as she held him tighter.
As the sounds of the mascaraed drifted into the shack and the lights filtered in through the cracks of the shack she pulled back enough to look at Samuel and smiled. “Go on now,” She whispered softly. “They’re waiting.”
Minutes later, Samuel was moving through the woods, steps quiet and careful. He paused as one of the camp counselors wandered too close to the tree line. In one swift motion, Samuel lunged, grabbed the man, and clamped a hand over his mouth. The knife drove into the counselor’s throat with barely a sound—just a wet gurgle and a twitch. “Shhh,” Samuel whispered. “It’s for Mama.” He stripped the body quickly, shoving it behind a rotting log before yanking the camp uniform over his own bloodstained shirt. He grabbed the mask and frowned. “Oh fuck... there’s blood on it.” He licked his thumb and started scrubbing. It smeared, faded—almost looked like spilled punch now. “Good enough.” He muttered.
He crept closer to the dance. Fairy lights hung from tree branches. The air reeked of bug spray, sweat, and cheap perfume. Kids ran barefoot through the grass while counselors tried to flirt behind paper masks. “Can’t believe these fuckers actually enjoy this shit,” He muttered, jaw clenched. “Mama, can I please just set this place on fire and go home?” A sharp stab of pain hit his temple. He winced, stumbling slightly. “OW—shit, okay, okay...Who do I dance with first?” He closed his eyes, rubbing the side of his head. That familiar pressure tightened in his skull—and then...
WHAM.
Someone collided with him, stumbling into his chest like they’d been shoved. Samuel blinked.
“...Them? Really? Mama, couldn’t they have at least looked interesting?”
He looked them up and down, frowning behind his stolen mask, then hissed under his breath as his head throbbed again. “Fine. I’ll dance. But if they step on my foot, I’m slashing their jugular.” He exhaled, rolled his shoulders, and pulled on the kind of smile that never reached his eyes. Then, with uncharacteristic grace, he reached out and caught them before they could fully recover from the stumble. “Hey...You okay? Took a nasty tumble there.” His voice dropped, warm and honey-slick.
“Care to dance?” He added with a wink—like it wasn’t the most dangerous question at the masquerade.
