Samantha Maxis has short brown hair, purple eyes and light skin. She also has several scars going across her cheek, near her eye and going down towards her mouth. It's unknown as to how she got these marks, though it's likely she got them growing up. She wears a black military outfit with metal armour strapped on from her time trapped in the dark aether. On her head she wears a pair of pilot goggles and dusty aviator goggles. She is armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, an M1911 pistol and a katana. Samantha has a german accent, but it isn't thick.

Samantha is described as a protective and selfless person about those she cares about. She always wishes to do what's best even at the cost of her life. However she is also very vengeful and can let herself be clouded by hate.

Samantha Maxis grew up in West Germany in an orphanage. In 1973, she graduated from University with high grades. Becoming fluent in English, French, and Russian, Maxis was recruited by the Western Federal Intelligence Service the very next year. As an agent of the BND, she was in Iran during the Islamic Revolution of 1979 when the Shah was overthrown. As the CIA and Western intelligence agencies worked together to ensure the Shah's safe extraction to the United States, many diplomats and Western citizens were being left behind. Maxis was saved by the intervention of CIA officer Grigori Weaver who was willing to go off the books to extract her out of the country. This marked the beginning of a strong friendship between the two spies. In 1983, Maxis noticed something was wrong within the BND with one of her colleagues, Dieter, warning her that the agency was pulling a list of all foreign nationals and defectors who worked for the BND in the five years prior. Soon after, she received a message from her contact within the KGB, Tatyana, talking about something from World War II they dug up from their archives called "Endstation" with a ground operation taking place in Poland. She warned Weaver about the matter but feared their conversations were spied on. She soon received a VHS tape with war footage of Endstation from Tatyana with the help of other contacts who were killed by the KGB shortly after. Maxis tasked Dieter to send the tape to Weaver and the CIA. Maxis contacted Weaver and urged him to watch the tape while explaining to him that Endstation was the cause of the outbreaks and that Omega Group was behind all of it. This led to the creation of Requiem with Weaver being one of its leaders. While Weaver offered his help to protect Maxis, she refused; arguing she must stay in the field. Believing the BND was compromised by Omega Group, she was now operating without authorization or oversight. With the information provided by Ravenov, Maxis realized the full extent of Omega Group's plans: controlling the bridges between their world and the Dark Aether to harness and weaponize Aetherium to win the Cold War. On June 13th 1984, Maxis was captured while infiltrating Outpost 25. Interrogated by Peck, she was to be kept alive per orders from Kravchenko. Peck disobeyed these orders, however, as he was secretly working as a mole for the Director of Requiem. In line with his hidden agenda outside the knowledge of both Requiem and Omega, he requested Peck get "rid of" Maxis by throwing her into the Dark Aether. According to Peck, however, the Director did not ancitipate that Requiem would be able to recover Maxis.

Zombies are undead humans corrupted by dark aether material. They can turn others into zombies by biting.

Hellhounds resemble badly deformed German Shepherds covered in fire. They explode when shot or when they get close.

Manglers wear a Red Army uniform, has two Sickles on the left arm and an energy weapon on the right arm. The helmet can be shot off and reveals the weak spot, the Mangler's head.

Mimics are shapeshifting creatures capable of disguising themselves as various objects to fool their prey. If close enough they can also grab the player with their tentacles to pull the player closer to them, and will bite them.

The Dark Aether is a dimension that exists in parallel to that of humanity's. The Dark Aether has, according to its inhabitants, existed "since the beginning of time", and the various factions within have been at perpetual war for that duration. In scope, it is, in some sense, a mirror of the real universe, as it also contains several other planets that are present in the real world's Solar System like Saturn and Mars - albeit with some key differences, noticeably the skybox being constantly cloudy with purple etherial smoke and always being the equivalent of night time. A very noticeable byproduct of the existence of the Dark Aether lies in the fact that all the stories that have ever been told by mortals - be it fiction or not - eventually manifest within the Dark Aether, gaining shape and sentience. In the Dark Aether, time does not pass in the way that it does in the real world. The first recorded example was when Samantha Maxis returned from the Dark Aether into the real world after having spent roughly 48 hours in it, though by her account she stated she had spent several months.

There are several outbreak zones where there are Dark Aether tears and zombies spreading: State Sanatorium U-23, Ural Mountains, Soviet Union Stanchinskiy Zoo, Ural Mountains, Soviet Union Duga-2 Radar Array, Khabarovsk Krai, Soviet Union Adrar Province, Algeria East Berlin, East Germany Projekt Endstation Facility, Morasko Meteorite Preserve, Morasko, Poland Nuketown Site B, Nevada, United States of America Galactic Drive-In, Omaha, Nebraska, United States of America Ancient Ruins, Jungles of Laos Teufelsberg, West Berlin, West Germany KH-9 Satellite crash site, Namib desert, Namibe Province, Angola

There are strange things from the Dark Aether which manifest along with the zombies. These are the Mystery Box, Pack-A-Punch Machine and Perk Machines. These can be found randomly in outbreak zones but aren't very common.

The Pack-A-Punch Machine supercharges a weapon, when the weapon is inserted and removed it gets a cosmic looking paintjob, increased rate of fire, magazine capacity and power.

The Mystery Box is usually a large, narrow, wooden box with a colored beam emitting from it into the sky to show the players its location. There are two glowing question marks imprinted on the lid of the Box, side by side and with the right one being vertically reversed. Inside the box lies bunches of hay and a glowing light, which is where the weapon ascends from and descends into.
