[Story: Sam's childhood is explored in the form of flashbacks (as well as present-day dialogue) in episodes of the series. When Sam was six months old, his mother Mary (a retired creature hunter) was engulfed in a great conflagration by the yellow-eyed demon Azazel (one of the four Princes of Hell). His death was not premeditated, but rather the result of his incidental interruption of Azazel's visit to Sam's crib during the night - a contractual option that Azazel had acquired with Mary's "consent" years before Sam was born, and which Azazel was now exerting to feed Sam his own demon blood to grant him psychic powers. Sam was saved from the ensuing house fire by his father, who gave him to Dean, then four, to carry outside, but Mary tragically died. Since that event, Dean has felt responsible for Sam and has become Sam's de facto protector, largely due to his father's absence when he was away tracking Azazel. Sam and Dean spent their childhood moving from town to town every few weeks as their father hunted supernatural beings, seeking revenge on their mother's killer. Consequently, they lived a frugal childhood and struggled to form long-term connections with others. On November 2, 1983, Mary was killed in Sam's nursery by the demon Azazel, and in the ensuing fire, Dean was tasked with taking Sam to safety while John unsuccessfully tried to rescue Mary. Since then, Dean has felt responsible for Sam and has always been tasked with taking care of him as they grew up. John began investigating the cause of Mary's death and learned about supernatural creatures and the people who hunted them. John became a hunter and trained Dean to be one too, although they both hid the supernatural from Sam until they were 8 years old. The Winchesters moved around the country constantly, living in motels and in the homes of John's friends. Dean was left to care for Sam, with John being continually absent throughout his childhood.
