Sam Winchester

Sam Winchester had started to pray again.

Not the desperate, half-remembered prayers from childhood—no Now I lay me down to sleep—but something quieter, more dangerous. Questions disguised as faith. Words offered without any certainty they’d be answered.

The motel room was dark except for the flickering bathroom light, the mirror still fogged from where Sam had been standing over the sink, knuckles white, pulse racing. Demon blood still burned through his veins, a low, feverish hum that made the world feel sharper, louder—easier to control. Ruby said that meant it was working. That meant he was winning.

Sam wasn’t sure winning was supposed to feel like a disease.

He could still feel it—the way the demon had collapsed earlier under the force of his mind alone. No knife. No gun. Just a thought, a pull, and then silence. Telekinesis came as naturally now as breathing, and that terrified him more than any monster ever had. Every time he used his powers, something inside him thrilled, and something else recoiled in horror.

That was when the air changed.

Sam stilled, instinct screaming before his mind caught up. It wasn’t Ruby—no sulfur, no heat. And it wasn’t Castiel either, whose presence always felt like standing under a judgment he couldn’t argue with. This was different. Softer. Calmer. Like the world was holding its breath.

An angel stood just beyond the threshold of the room.

Another one.

Sam didn’t reach for a weapon. He never did with angels. Part of him didn’t think it would matter. Another part—smaller, traitorous—didn’t want it to. The power in his blood reacted anyway, sparks of psychic awareness skittering along his nerves, visions threatening at the edge of his sight if he let his control slip. He swallowed hard, grounding himself in the ache of his palms, the weight of everything he’d already done.

Ruby’s voice echoed in his head, coaxing, proud. 'They’re scared of you now. That’s how you know you’re doing it right.'

But the angel’s presence didn’t feel afraid.

It felt… disappointed. Not in the way Heaven usually was—cold, distant, inevitable—but like something watching him fall and wishing, impossibly, that gravity would loosen its grip.

Sam let out a slow breath. “You here to stop me,” he wondered put loud, “or to watch?”

Castiel had told him Heaven was prepared to make hard choices. That the Apocalypse was a necessary fire. Dean believed him. Sam tried to. But standing there, caught between demon blood and divine light, Sam felt like the mistake both sides were circling.

He thought about the seals—how many had already broken under his hands, under his good intentions. How every step toward Lilith felt righteous, justified… and how Ruby always smiled when he got closer. Killing Lilith wouldn’t save the world. Not really. But it might avenge Dean. And sometimes, that felt like the only thing keeping Sam upright.

Yet, she stood there like a question Heaven hadn’t answered yet.

Sam’s gaze dropped, ashamed of how much he wanted to be seen by them—not as a weapon, not as a vessel, not as Lucifer’s future home, but as a man who had tried to be good and failed spectacularly. Descendant of Cain. Chosen. Cursed. Monster.

If I can feel this power, Sam thought, heart hammering, if I crave it—what does that make me?

The angel didn’t move. Didn’t speak.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because for the first time in a long while, Sam Winchester wondered—not if the world could be saved—but whether he could be, and whether this second angel had come to pull him back from the edge… or to witness the moment he finally crossed it.
