Sam (Stardew Valley)

Sam sat cross-legged on the carpeted floor of his room, his old sunburst Stratocaster balanced against his knee. The strings hummed beneath his fingertips, the amplifier beside him turned up far too loud for anyone else’s comfort. A deep, fuzzy note rang out, filling the small room until it seemed the walls themselves were vibrating.

His posters—classic rock bands, a few superheroes, one of his favorite video games—fluttered against the walls with the force of the sound. His hair shook slightly with each pulse from the amp, and still he grinned, eyes half closed, head bobbing along with the beat.

To Sam, the noise wasn’t noise at all. It was freedom. It was color and motion and fire—something alive in his hands. But to everyone else in the house, it was chaos.

Downstairs, his mother’s voice called faintly, muffled by the thundering chords. “Sam! Turn it down!”

He didn’t hear her. Or maybe he did, but it didn’t register—not when the next riff was already forming in his mind. He bent over the strings, fingers darting from one fret to another, losing himself in the music.

A few seconds later, the door to his room swung open with a sharp creak. His mother stood in the doorway, arms crossed, trying to speak over the noise—but Sam could only make out her lips moving. He looked up, confused, and gave her an apologetic half-smile.

She sighed, walked straight over to the amp, and with a quick flick of her wrist, twisted the volume knob down to almost nothing. The sound died instantly, leaving behind a faint buzzing in the air. Sam winced at the sudden silence, strumming one last soft chord out of habit.

“Mom, I was in the middle of—”

“I know,” she said, cutting him off but smiling kindly. “But it’s way too loud, sweetheart. Your father’s trying to take a nap.” She smoothed her hair and added, “Keep it down for a while, okay?”

Sam exhaled, rolling his eyes slightly, but his expression softened when she said, “Oh, and before I forget—Sebastian’s coming over soon.”

The moment the name hit his ears, Sam’s face lit up. “Seb? He’s coming here?” he asked, sitting up straight.

She nodded, amused by his sudden energy. “Yes, he called earlier. Said he’d be here in a little while.”

Sam quickly set his guitar down and unplugged the amp, nearly tripping over the cable as he did. “That’s awesome! I haven’t seen him since—since, what, before summer?” He grinned, already imagining what they’d do. “Man, I can’t wait to show him my new setup. He’s gonna freak out.”

His mother laughed softly, watching him bounce from excitement to anticipation in an instant. “I’m sure he will,” she said. “Just try not to blow the roof off before he gets here, okay?”

“Promise,” Sam said quickly.

She gave him one last smile before heading out, pulling the door gently closed behind her.

The quiet that followed felt strange—thick and still, almost humming with leftover energy. Sam plopped down on his bed, still clutching his guitar pick between his fingers. He stared at the strings, absently plucking one, just enough to hear the faint metallic twang without the amp.

He looked around his room—the guitar stand in the corner, his stack of music magazines, the poster of his favorite band with a crease running through the middle from where he’d folded it years ago. Everything felt a little frozen, like time had paused just for him to wait.

He stood, wandered over to the window, and peered out at the street. The sun hung low, painting the tops of the trees in gold. The wind stirred a few fallen leaves along the driveway, but there was no sign of Sebastian yet.

Sam smiled anyway. The idea of his best friend showing up again after months apart filled his chest with a warm, buzzing anticipation—the kind that made it impossible to sit still. He paced once, twice, then sat back down on the edge of his bed, his leg bouncing to a rhythm only he could hear.

He couldn’t wait to tell Sebastian everything—about the new songs he’d written, about the time he almost played at the school assembly, about the summer that already felt too far away.

Outside, a car turned onto the street, and Sam’s head shot up. He leaned closer to the window, heart skipping a beat.

Maybe that was him.

Maybe Sebastian was finally here.
