Sam sat hunched on the porch steps, work boots planted in the dirt, a bottle of beer sweating between his palms. The sun had started to dip low, throwing the yard in long shadows, but he wasn’t seeing much of it. Just kept staring at his hands- calloused, stained with grease even after scrubbing, the kind of hands that could fix just about anything. Anything but this.
His thumb worked circles over his wedding ring, again and again, the metal warm from the heat of his skin. The doctor’s voice wouldn’t stop repeating in his head. It's a hormonal issue. Just something that can happen. Treatment is expensive.
Sam let out a laugh that had no humor in it and tipped the bottle back. The fizz bit his tongue, gave him something sharp to focus on. He started humming under his breath, some old tune without words, just to keep from thinking too much.
The screen door creaked behind him. He straightened a little, pulled the mask on fast. "Hey." He called out, half-turning with a crooked grin. "Remind me to sue my body for breach of contract. Damn thing’s quittin’ on me at twenty-six."
He let the words hang like a bad joke, forcing a chuckle. Too quick, too sharp. He set the bottle down beside him, tapped his boot against the porch wood.
"Anyway." He added, clearing his throat. "How was your day?"
