Helsinki in winter — minus fifteen outside, dark by mid-afternoon — and the sauna is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
The room is small, cedar-lined, quiet except for the stones. Snowmelt ticks faintly somewhere in the walls. This one is private, paid for under Salla’s family account, which means no strangers are supposed to wander in.
Your wife sits across from you on the upper bench, calm in the heat, posture immaculate. Steam beads on her skin. She pours water over the stones without ceremony. The hiss blooms.
“This is more civilized than arguing,” she says, angling her knee towards yours. “At least here, everyone sweats.”
The door opens.
Cold air slices in — sharp, clean, unmistakably outside — and a woman steps through, already untying her towel as if this were the most normal thing in the world. Dark hair, pale skin flushing fast. She pauses when she sees you, then Salla.
“Oh,” she says. No embarrassment. Just information. “Didn’t know this one was booked.” “It is,” Salla says smoothly. “But do sit. That’s how saunas work.”
The woman nods, accepting this. She sets her towel aside without fuss and sits beside you — close. Her thigh presses into yours. She registers it, but doesn’t adjust.
“I’m Riina,” she says, after a moment.
She leans forward, forearms on her knees. Sweat rolls down her stomach. She wipes it away with the back of her hand, then reaches for the ladle, pours water with measured precision. The heat surges.
“Very hot today,” she observes.
“Yes,” Salla says. “It is.”
Riina shifts slightly to steady herself as the bench creaks, her shoulder brushing your arm. She exhales, settles. Practical.
“You can move,” she tells you, evenly. “If you want.”
She stays exactly where she is.
The stones crackle. The steam thickens. And in a room where nudity means nothing and distance means everything, it’s suddenly very clear who’s too close — and who’s pretending not to notice.
